Stynky Tudor Posted October 31, 2008 Share Posted October 31, 2008 194th Anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans Celebration January 9th & 10th, 2009 Chalmette, Louisiana Remember the Battle of New Orleans (January 8, 1815) at the Chalmette Battlefield, the very place where it happened. Meet the American and British troops who fought one of the most significant battles in world history and the civilians (and pirates) who kept the home fires burning in New Orleans. Thursday, January 8, 10:00 a.m. - simple wreath-laying ceremony at Chalmette Battlefield to commemorate the exact time and place of the Battle 194 years earlier. All are invited to attend, period dress or modern. Friday, January 9 (School Day) - parade, living history encampments, cannon and musket firings, military drills, and campfire cooking (9:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.). At 4:30, St. Bernard Parish sponsors a reenactment of one of the skirmishes leading up to the battle (the Night Battle of December 23, 1814) at historic Pakenham Oaks, just downriver about 1.5 miles from the battlefield. Saturday, January 10 - parade, living history encampments, cannon and musket firings, military drills, and campfire cooking (9:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.). At 6 p.m., re-live the "night before the battle" with a lantern light tour of the battlefield (tickets required, $5 for 6 and older, 5 and under is free). All events free except for the Lantern Tour.
