Rats
Santa Maria in Ohio http://www.santamaria.org/index.php OK so here's the scoop... I have off these two weekend and after talking to Sweet Kate and Cutter Mick, I totally want to hang about on this ship!! I have a four day weekend the 1st weekend in Oct. and would be up to bring the whole tavern and Sh-tuff... That weekend they also have: October 4 Dueling at the Dock: The 6th Annual “Dueling at the Dock” Fencing Tournament. We could really add some color to this event??? Now there is also: 30, 31, Nov 1 The Haunted Ship: Look out for the spiders and rats. Don’t be surprised if we come under attack. Bring your family and friends, Watch out for your skeletal kins And Never Turn your Back! If lucky, I'm hoping our two wonderful newlyweds might be able to wrangle an accord wit the powers that be??? Just a suggestion! No rest for the wicked! Wait a minute... that's me?!
Kate Souris
We have to talk to George and Mark.... They do all the organising and stuff so we'll have to find out what kind of events these are, or if they want additional help with it. Michael said he would look into it this week. :)

michaelsbagley
My main concern regarding the fencing thing at the Santa Maria, is I am unsure whether it is a sport fencing gig, or an SCA fencing tourney, or whatever... And as such, I am a little warry of trying to push for this as it might be perceived as an attempt to steal the spotlight... If it is sports fencing, sports fencing tends to work best in a more conservative atmosphere, if it is SCA.. well SCA and re-enactors have always had an uneasy relationship... Choosing another time might be more ideal so we can take and keep the spotlight rather than having to share it or tread lightly so as to not steal the thunder of the fencers. Like Kate said, I will try and contact the people I know that are in tighter with the ship's committee and see what either of them advises and take it from there. I am almost thinking because of the late date, it might be best to await the beginning of the next season so as to maximize our potential attendance and give us more time to really organize a spectacular event... I have a lot of concerns about "red tape" because of the urban downtown setting of the Santa Maria, so having that time to see what red tape we can dance around or avoid would be most helpful as well. Thanks for starting seperate thread to discuss this on... It will be much to our advantage to keep all the thoughts, ideas, and concerns for this together. Capt. Sterling
It would be nice for the crewe to assist in a fund raiser... "I being shot through the left cheek, the bullet striking away great part of my upper jaw, and several teeth which dropt down the deck where I fell... I was forced to write what I would say to prevent the loss of blood, and because of the pain I suffered by speaking."~ Woodes Rogers Crewe of the Archangel http://jcsterlingcptarchang.wix.com/creweofthearchangel# http://creweofthearchangel.wordpress.com/
Kate Souris
And the ship desperately needs a fundraiser.....it's not in very good shape. I think they brought it here in 1991 and it's spendy to upkeep and admission is about $3ish... Everyone that works on it is generally volunteer, but they do have some paid employees. Capt. Bo of the WTF co.
I definitely cannot be there, but if I can bang out some iron work for a good cause let me know. My arms and grip are finaly back to working order after three years of recuperating. PiP stuff is done but for the finish work on the pike, and Callenish has an order in for something , but maybe I can put something together for this if you need it? I'm not crew I know, but still willing to help if I can. Bo

michaelsbagley
M.A. d'Dogge, you can come and play Santa if you really want to... But it might be a little out of season for you. Now, here is the skinny... Mark (head of the Scioto Pirates, which is the local burgeoning pirate re-enactment group) has just suggested a POSSIBLE demo on the Santa Maria for Sept. 20th (in honour of "Talk Like a Pirate Day" which is the day before). IF this comes together, it will likely be a small demo, similar to what we did in July (see the Santa Maria Demo Thread in the Raids section of the pub). I will let you all know as soon as I recieve firm word on this happenning or not. But it is looking promising as the ship does not have any other events planned for this day. This small demo style event has a fair bit of restrictions attached to it (assuming we are stuck with the same rules/guidelines as we were last time). Black Powder weapons HAVE TO REMAIN on the ship, or be packed up to be transported to or from the ship. The ship is on teh river in the heart of an urban downtown area, so flintlock pressence is something that must be done with great care. The ship has little to now display space, so bringing a chest or table to work on or place any display items is crucial, otherwise you will likely get stuck laying you items out on the deck. We could feasibly do some limited fencing sword work display or practice, but being shipboard, would make this tricky... Although if we remove our black powder weapons, we might be able to do some of this on the grass near the ship. I'd have to run this by Mark to see what he thinks. Anyways, the pirate demos would most likely be worked into and in between the ships normal tour, which focusses on the history of the ship and Christopher Columbus' travels, but this is again subject to change. If anyone has ideas or thoughts that might work, or if you have any idea if you might be able to make it down to Columbus for this, please let me know. I imagine during the lulls in this demo, and perhaps after the demo, we could discuss the possibility of a more festival/invasion style event for next spring or summer (as a fundraiser as mentioned above in a previous post). michaelsbagley
Sorry no Rats... Gotta work that weekend Don't be discouraged Rats... While you will be sorely missed, this small demo will likely be a small demo, and a planning session for a bigger event next spring or summer... And that is the one you will want to not miss! Matty Bottles
Gosh, that's my first wedding aniversary. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it's unlikely - but not impossible! "The time was when ships passing one another at sea backed their topsails and had a 'gam,' and on parting fired guns; but those good old days have gone. People have hardly time nowadays to speak even on the broad ocean, where news is news, and as for a salute of guns, they cannot afford the powder. There are no poetry-enshrined freighters on the sea now; it is a prosy life when we have no time to bid one another good morning." - Capt.
