hurricane Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 This is now on exhibit in Fort Charles in Port Royal. It's out of the Jamaica National Heritage Trust's collection of artifacts. It had a little story along with it about how the pirates used them. Forgot to take a photo of it (too much Red Stripe and rum, no doubt). Looks a bit familiar, eh. Can't remember what the information card said - it did have a reference to it being in use after a particular battle when they saw it first in use. Anyway, interesting artifact that I hadn't seen before. Oh, and to the left of it were balls made of stone, not lead, for the pistols. -- Hurricane -- Hurricane ______________________________________________________________________ http://piratesofthecoast.com/images/pyracy-logo1.jpg Captain of The Pyrates of the Coast Author of "Memoirs of a Buccaneer: 30 Year Before the Mast" (Published in Fall 2011) Scurrilous Rogue Stirrer of Pots Fomenter of Mutiny Bon Vivant & Roustabout Part-time Carnival Barker Certified Ex-Wife Collector Experienced Drinking Companion "I was screwed. hurricane Posted July 28, 2008 Author Posted July 28, 2008 The blade part was about 8". They totally redid the exhibit. I would have taken more photos but I had to respect the sign that said no photographs. They had lots of buttons, shoe and clothing buckles, pewter ware and every day items on display this time that I haven't seen before... In the second building they have the artifacts from the naval era, including lots of surgical items, shipwright tools and other implements used by carpenters, wood workers, cooks and cobblers. At that price you could order about 30 Loyalist or Middlesex guns or about 12-15 fully custom pieces. Equip the whole crew! Which reminds me, I need a blunderbuss... hurricane Posted June 27, 2009 Author Posted June 27, 2009 Wig curlers. Nice. They're made out of pipe clay. Don't know if anyone makes them today. But they'd be cool to have in a collection of daily items for education purposes. PoD Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 There was a syringe like that on the Queen Annes Revenge wreck website and they said it was used to treat Sexually Transmitted diseases. (Now how many of you just crossed your legs ha ha) ...and then I discovered the wine...
hurricane Posted July 4, 2009 Author Posted July 4, 2009 (edited) The lime and molasses was used to treat venereal diseases as well. Originally they thought it contained mercury, but an analysis of the interior by the museum found the remnants of lime and molasses instead. That had to feel good - try squirting some ascorbic acid up there sometime. -- Hurricane Edited July 10, 2009 by hurricane -- Hurricane ______________________________________________________________________ http://piratesofthecoast.com/images/pyracy-logo1.jpg Captain of The Pyrates of the Coast Author of "Memoirs of a Buccaneer: 30 Year Before the Mast" (Published in Fall 2011) Scurrilous Rogue Stirrer of Pots Fomenter of Mutiny Bon Vivant & Roustabout Part-time Carnival Barker Certified Ex-Wife Collector Experienced Drinking Companion "I was screwed. John Maddox Roberts Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 The period name for the rectal syringe was "clyster." In 17th-18th century comedy, the physician was always equipped with an enormous clyster. Vanessa Redgrave got one used on her in the 70s movie "The Devils," based on Aldous Huxley's "The Devils of Loudon." It was in turn based on a true story about a convent in 17th century France where all the nuns came down with a bad case of demonic possession. A clyster loaded with God knows what was one of the instruments used to drive the devils out. The one employed on Redgrave was the size of a bicycle pump. It's a movie that makes you glad you didn't live during the reign of Louis XIII.
Tar Bucket Bill Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 Hurricane, Do you happen to know the approximate [or exact] dimensions of the openings of the buckles? In other words, what width of belt would those first three take? Thanks alot. -Tar Bucket Bill
