Kate Souris
I tend to handwash most of my things in the bathtub or the bathroom sink and then hang them up to dry. My question is....how does one clean a set of stays? I would imagine that handwashing in the sink would be alright, but what to clean them with? I would be afraid that the reed boning would be difficult to get detergent out of. Any suggestions?

Cheeky Actress
Hmm...stays eh? Well, to be honest...you don't. You can spot clean any spills with lye soap (thinking 'green' here). But due to the construction of period stays (reeds or cane) they do not do well with conventional method of submerging in water. The quick method- just a few shots of Fabreeze will do. If you have more time, let them air out over night. Member of "The Forsaken"
Capt. Sterling
I tend to handwash most of my things in the bathtub or the bathroom sink and then hang them up to dry. My question is....how does one clean a set of stays? if you made your stays with a lining... the lining was supposedly meant to be removed and that would be washed and when dried, replaced. I think Kass speaks about that in her stays instructions and notes "I being shot through the left cheek, the bullet striking away great part of my upper jaw, and several teeth which dropt down the deck where I fell... I was forced to write what I would say to prevent the loss of blood, and because of the pain I suffered by speaking."~ Woodes Rogers Crewe of the Archangel http://jcsterlingcptarchang.wix.com/creweofthearchangel# http://creweofthearchangel.wordpress.com/
michaelsbagley
Speaking partly for the wife, and mostly for myself here... I was hopeing there might be a reasonably safe way to wash the lining without pulling it out... As the one who does most of the sewing, I was hoping I could avoid having to cut the stitching and restitching the lining in... But if that is what I have to do, then that is what I have to do... Capt. Sterling
But if that is what I have to do, then that is what I have to do... Honestly M. Souris, if she ...ahem...gets a little "high" it would be perfectly pc and let her just stand next to Maddogge... no one will ever suspect yer wife then! Barnaby Wilde
There is a product called "Nature's Miracle" that works wonderfully well for those between-washing cleanups. It is often sold in pet stores for use on pet accidents. So, as such, it is an enzyme spray that removes sweat, body oils, (urine),etc.. It has no fake, Fabreeze smell and really does "freshen" your garb. Obviously, it may not remove powder burns but dissolves many oils and proteins... (insert Lewensky pun here). "Don't leave the ship without it." By the way, it works great for pet smells and stains also. ~Barnaby Wilde

MadL
Actually I have been stumbling across various medical authorities that claim urinating on yerself is just an ol' wenche's tale?? Can't remember what remedy they recommended but it would be interesting to find th' truth t' this story... Here we go: SCDNR - Jelly Fish "A variety of substances have been used to reduce the effects of jellyfish stings. Meat tenderizer, sugar, vinegar, plant juices and sodium bicarbonate have all been used with varying degrees of success. Methylated spirits and other forms of alcohol formerly recommended for inhibiting stinging cells actually stimulate them and may increase pain and cause severe skin reactions. Picric acid and human urine also cause a discharge of nematocysts and should not be used." Now I also found some other sites that made statements such as: 'urinating on it may help but not as well as other remedies' ~All skill be in vain if an angel pisses down th' barrel o' yer flintlock!
