LadyBarbossa
Not sure where exactly this'll go but I'll try here. I'd love to learn swordfighting and the sort. Be there a video or DVD set out there to help? Difficult for me to just find a few folks around to learn. Already tried that, can't seemed to find some blighters. So, figured that if there was something I can watch in the comforts of m' quarters to help and practice, at least I know what th' devil I'm doing. ~Lady B Tempt Fate! an' toss 't all t' Hell!" Coastie04
Not sure how historically accurate the techniques are, but Cold Steel makes an instructional DVD called "Fighting with the Saber and Cutlass". I've never seen it, but I've got two knives from the company that are of very good quality, so I just hope that can be said about their DVDs as well. They also have "The Fighting Tomahawk" and "The Fighting Machette" which look interesting. http://www.coldsteel.com Coastie She was bigger and faster when under full sail With a gale on the beam and the seas o'er the rail
MadL
I have the "Fighting with the Saber and Cutlass" set from ColdSteel. I like it, having not had any 'formal' training with sword nor cutlass (all my martial arts was 'weaponless') and I have not been through all disks yet (3 or 4 in all) but it starts out step-by-step. First a brief discussion of the blade, then how to hold the blade, how to let your thumb be your reference, then some foot work, some thrusts, more foot work, putting it all together.....and that is as far as I got before my iguana bit my arm in two. Hey, now my arm is whole again I really need to finish those disks!! But for instructional videos, I thought they are very well put together, still need to get through the advanced ones yet....oh, and I LOVE ColdSteel's blades, just wish they would do some older designs. ~All skill be in vain if an angel pisses down th' barrel o' yer flintlock! Capt. Sterling
Hey Lady B... seriously you might want to pm Maddogge about all this... I am sure he could give you some ideas... He's in charge of all the fighting with the Archangel Crewe... "I being shot through the left cheek, the bullet striking away great part of my upper jaw, and several teeth which dropt down the deck where I fell... I was forced to write what I would say to prevent the loss of blood, and because of the pain I suffered by speaking."~ Woodes Rogers Crewe of the Archangel http://jcsterlingcptarchang.wix.com/creweofthearchangel# http://creweofthearchangel.wordpress.com/

Story
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2008-0...tial-arts_N.htm SEATTLE — The golf cases propped up against the walls are full of swords, daggers and the occasional bit of chain mail. The halls of the community center ring with the clash of steel, the thud of shields and the quick snip-snip of rapiers. The books quoted are as often as not in medieval German or Latin. Welcome to a Western martial arts conference. Not a cowboy or lariat in sight. Western in this case is Western European, as opposed to the better-known Asian variety. Dances for nickels. the Royaliste
As we travel about, we find many 'types', if you will, of 'swordfighting' technics amongst the public. In 2005, to add a little something to our presence as 'pirates' in various ports, we started giving stage combat sword fighting lessons to both young and adults....It began with some excellent instruction from our above sword expert, Iron Bess...Some people prefer martial arts training, some medieval, etc. We are not trying to teach offensive weapon technics, as their are automatic weapons that cover such action. We prefer the authentic looking, but not aggressive Stage methods. We find that many are doing the same positions, just different numbering...We don't teach fencing, which is totally different in scope. To date, I suppose we have numbers in the thousands. Some supplementation by a Chicago group have helped get us along as for advancement, but you still can't beat the excellent methods practiced by Iron Bess...Thanks, 'Bess, we owe it all to you and your thoughtfulness...BTW, regardless of other methods, ours have been 'right on' for the three films under our belts so far.... Ransom
Maybe Bess and Jill should make an sword fighting instructional DVD "Swinging Weapons for Fun and Exercise — Age No Barrier to Having a Good Time." ...schooners, islands, and maroons and buccaneers and buried gold... You can do everything right, strictly according to procedure, on the ocean, and it'll still kill you. But if you're a good navigator, a least you'll know where you were when you died.......From The Ship Killer by Justin Scott.
