withoutaname
so I am way too excited to wait for the fall to do this, I booked out rental in the Truman Annex for PiP. I will share with you my experience in case you want to save some time on to locate an affordable place (many different types of rentals pending on budget listed below)- I do not camp (let me stress DO NOT CAMP, I willingly admit, I won't even try camping anymore). This is also a bit of insight into my brain of advanced planning obsession- so if anyone needs help with any planning related activities, I will nominate myself as the resident project manager after this. Much of my research is to avoid the additional walking and cabs we spent the last 2 trips to key west. (because walking back to the historic district after a lot of booze consumption seems reasonable however is not smart. It increases blisters and bleeding feet which still have not recovered and you don't notice because your drunk) 1. www.vrbo.com you will may get a better rate going through the owners than through Compass realty, not that much better but our quote was a little less for the week through owner directly although we still paid compass for the rental 2. http://www.compass-realty.com/ has great apts for rent, not all are listed on rentals by owners, so if your looking for something particular use them 3. Right outside of Fort Zach guest Houses/hotels if you are looking but don't know where to start: http://www.thebanyanresort.com/ (way too expensive but so, so pretty) http://www.marreros.com/rooms.htm (off season rates start at 100/night) http://www.historickeywestinns.com/propert...house_court.htm (across from Hemingway House- I think rates start at 159) http://www.lhabitation.com/rates.cfm rates start at 109/night http://www.angelinaguesthouse.com/rooms.htm (share a bath room starting at 69/night) http://www.vrbo.com/140317 (850/week, but I do not know the location) http://oldtownsuites.com (a little bit of a walk, but we usually stay at one of their rentals in the historic district and have always been happy- they have a few places close to duval also I know I've book a room under 100/night in the off season in the past) About cottage rentals: Book as advanced as possible, last year I started looking 3 months before PiP and I wasn't able to find anything open the ups of booking in the Truman Annex/Shipyard: You can book in advance, you have a place close enough to walk back and forth and no cab rides needed and a pool! the not so good part (the financial forewarning) along with the 11.5% hotel tax A. You need to pay 50% to hold the rental now B. You will have to pay reminder of the balance 60 days before your stay C. When you get there you need to put down a 500 $ deposit- which will be charge to your card not not reimbursed for up to 10 days D. Some places charge an extra cleaning fee, so make sure you know about this in advance E. Some places consider Dec 1 in season, so look around for people who cut off at Dec 15. Misson
Very nice work. I've stayed at the Banyan and it is very nice - and overpriced about 30 -40% above what you can get if you hunt a bit and don't mind walking. You also get the added benefit of sometimes trying to be sold a timeshare from my experience. (The Banyan is actually a timeshare, but they rent out units when timeshare owners ask them to.) This last time I stayed at the Douglas House which I do not particularly recommend. The location is ok, but the walls are paper thin and I really don't care to hear the neighbors discussing their plans, arguing about their plans and making up after arguing about their plans in the bedroom. Plus it's sort of overpriced. I still say renting a house is the best bet. Truman Annex is closer than anything else you will get to PiP - it's right in between Fort Zachary Taylor and the diagonal line you could draw to the party side of Duvall street in Old Town. Oh, and paying extra to be in close walking distance of downtown Key West is definitely worth your extra pennies any time you stay there from my experience. Key West is a truly sucky place to drive, mostly because of the cost of and difficulty in finding adequate parking. A car can be a real albatross. Even the hotels sometimes charge you extra for parking. I've stayed in what is euphemistically called "New Town" which is on the East end of the island and it's too far to walk to anywhere you will most likely want to go, other than the big box supermarket, Sears Town and the MoPed shop you'll start looking for to get you to Old Town faster than walking. hurricane
If you know where to park it's not that expensive. For example, by the seaport we always park at the toothless guy's lot - usually $5 a day if you get there early. At the fort, it's easy to hitch a ride over to the larger stores if you need one. Our own crewe made daily trips for ice and bread so there's always someone heading over to the other side of the island. Sounds like you did some great research. After years of doing the hotel thing and staying at the fort last year, I wouldn't trade staying at the fort even for a free room. Come to think of it we did have a free room last year and still picked the fort over it. But to the people who don't like to rough it, I think you really came up with some great options. Renting homes is a dicey thing. When we looked at doing it, the city was considering banning the practice because the neighbors didn't like the transient renters and loud parties. Not sure what the city council decision was on that and perhaps our Bone Island mates could shed some more light on that... - Hurricane -- Hurricane ______________________________________________________________________ http://piratesofthecoast.com/images/pyracy-logo1.jpg Captain of The Pyrates of the Coast Author of "Memoirs of a Buccaneer: 30 Year Before the Mast" (Published in Fall 2011) Scurrilous Rogue Stirrer of Pots Fomenter of Mutiny Bon Vivant & Roustabout Part-time Carnival Barker Certified Ex-Wife Collector Experienced Drinking Companion "I was screwed. Misson
I'm pretty sure they did ban it, at least at one point. Yet you can still rent houses for a week somehow. There's always a way around legal tangles. $5 a day for parking is pretty good if you plan to drive over and stick around. And the point about people going from the park is also well noted. Parking in the park is free and as re-enactors, we can get passes in and out. Plus, if they have the Shuttle again this year, that is another really handy way to get back and forth between downtown Old Town. (That was really cool. I actually didn't use it because I had a bike, but it put you right in front of the Rum Barrel. They had this really good Roasted Corn and Crab Chowder that I highly recommend.) hurricane
The shuttle was a wonderful addition, to be sure. I had the chance to ride it and entertain aboard it to and from Pyrate Soul and I would do that all day. And for those who want to get on the other side of Old Town it's a great ride to get over to places like the Schooner Bar, the sunset cruises, Pepe's, the Rum Barrel (of course) Turtle Kraals (bet on the turtles Friday and Monday evenings) and BO's Fishwagon, one of the last original dives in Key West and superb seafood on the cheap. -- Hurricane -- Hurricane ______________________________________________________________________ http://piratesofthecoast.com/images/pyracy-logo1.jpg Captain of The Pyrates of the Coast Author of "Memoirs of a Buccaneer: 30 Year Before the Mast" (Published in Fall 2011) Scurrilous Rogue Stirrer of Pots Fomenter of Mutiny Bon Vivant & Roustabout Part-time Carnival Barker Certified Ex-Wife Collector Experienced Drinking Companion "I was screwed. The ride to the parade is actually what is making us come back to PiP next year. In fact, if you didn't ride it last year, ride it and make sure there are a lot of pirates on it so there is a sing along! We should make the bus driver participate in a hat or something since he is really captaining the bus "It is more like I am transitioning from a pirate hobby to the pirate lifestyle"- me

Too bad we couldn't continue the sing a long on the float. I like country music but that choice of Christmas song was horrid. The "pirate 12 days of Christmas that Silverhawk did RULES!! “PIRACY, n. I found these to be very helpful over the phone. I've booked a single condo by the Fort for myself. Which unit are you in at the Truman Annex, we'll be in Oyster's Pearl. We are also talking about setting up a tent so we can sleep where we feel like falling down at the end of the day, but me not being one for bugs will probably opt to sleep indoors most of the time. Misson
No I flew from Mexico last year. It's where my family had Thanksgiving. (My sister is living there courtesy of GM.) This year is something completely different. Some notes to those interested in this deal... they require half up front and the other half 60 days in advance (which is pretty stern stuff from my experience, but their pricing is very good IMO.) There is a $45 non-refundable reservation fee and a $100 cancellation fee if you cancel 60 days in advance. They also require you to put a $500 deposit which is charged to your credit card and returned within 15 days of leaving if you left the place in nice shape. Just so everyone thinking about doing this is aware... Lily Alexander
The first PIP Edward and I attended, we stayed at the Southernmost Hotel. It was reasonably priced, clean, swimming pool, bar. The only problem it's quite a bit aways from the Fort. If you don't have a car, it's going to be a decent walk. hurricane
The best deal is the hostel there, $39 a night. Raphael Misson
I'm staying in the Pegasus Hotel, which is about as close as you can get for the price. (It's my first stay there, so I don't have anything to tell you about. I always thought it had an interesting look to it, though. Since it's only a long weekend, I figure it's worth a try.) The best place to stay (and the best deal IMO) is in the condos at Truman Annex. There is often a minimum stay time for such things, but you have a full house at your disposal and the rates work out to be better than most hotels and equivalent to many of the more reasonable ones. I am going to attach this thread to the thread about that topic so we can group this all together for future reference. That way you can read the research from last year. Sea Horse
Mates, Thar be a few reasonable rooms to be had at the local Bed and Breakfast. Rates start about $109 a night and run upwards to $200.00 for multiple pirates. www.historickeywestinns.com If ye be looking for comfort and a place within reasonable distance these are pretty comfortable.
