Lily Alexander
With a little prompting from Captain Sterling, this thread is for discussing and finding ways to make all the cool special effects for PIP 08 happen. There are so many talented and creative people here, the more resources we can pull from, the greater the chance the special effects will just blow people away. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate. From the beginning discussions to the actual construction. Looking forward to hearing all of your wonderful ideas and working with you to make this a PIP 08 project we can all be proud of. Capt. Sterling
Off the top of my head the most needed items/effects: Splinter wounds Black powder wounds and burns Debris from two ships blown to Kingdom come when one's powder magazine is accidentally ignited during a battle and the other was too close due to a boarding action. Lily Alexander
How specific do you need the wood to be? Our local garden center throws away old pallets all the time as I'm sure many do. This is what we use to board up our windows at Halloween. Capt. Sterling
Good English oak would be wonderful but costly so not necessary... If it comes cheap or better yet free, and since it must look blown to bits... the pallets sound like a good starting place... Lily Alexander
The pallets are indeed free. If anyone one else can contact their garden centers, please do so. michaelsbagley
The pallets are indeed free. If anyone one else can contact their garden centers, please do so. My current job contract is in a shipping warehouse... So I am surrounded by mountains of wooden pallets on a daily basis. But being so far removed from just about everyone here, I am guessing that might not be too helpful... But if there is anyone near(ish) that wants any, I am sure I can get plenty (within reason of course).
hurricane
You may want to ask the Bone Islands if there are local sources for them. Shipping wood can get pretty costly, at least if you want debris. I know there are tons of stores down there and I've seen many stacks of pallets around them... -- Hurricane -- Hurricane ______________________________________________________________________ http://piratesofthecoast.com/images/pyracy-logo1.jpg Captain of The Pyrates of the Coast Author of "Memoirs of a Buccaneer: 30 Year Before the Mast" (Published in Fall 2011) Scurrilous Rogue Stirrer of Pots Fomenter of Mutiny Bon Vivant & Roustabout Part-time Carnival Barker Certified Ex-Wife Collector Experienced Drinking Companion "I was screwed. Harry
We generally have a bunch of scrap lumber sitting around the park shop. We also are able to acquire pallets from our local K-Mart. And, we do have group of plywood sitting about from other events that could possibly be used. Note taken on the idea and will be brought up to the Bone Island build team. ------- Fort Taylor Pyrate Fest MySpace Page Master Hairbone's MySpace Page ------- There is no more equitable judge than a cannon
Misson
Skeleton pirates in gibbets! Skeleton pirates in gibbets! I challenge Keith and Haunting Lily to do one too. (I really want to do this. Misson
Maybe we should make it a contest - like those scarecrow contests they hold at county fairs. We could get a bunch of people to make them. We could get a bunch of people to make them. Well, people with skeletons... I don't want to burst your bubble and I think it's a great idea but let's get the approval first. Once that happens, we need to know how many would be needed. Perhaps if they don't want them along the path we can have a couple set up on the beach to attract attention from the water. Diosa De Cancion
Hi all, I wasn't completely sure which of the threads to put this in, but... I love the ideas coming for the 'shipwreck' camp next year.... however.....let's also work on a way that we make sure people come through the fort FIRST before going out there. The only way the fort gets their $$$ for this event is if people go through the gates on the fort grounds and pay for a ticket. We need to make sure they get their money so they keep inviting us back to the playground :) Maybe a herald (with bell and all) announcing the explosion or something and pointing people in the direction. It would of course also be on a schedule...and our ever-so-talented Master Studley is working on a map of the grounds that would explain to visitors how to get from point A to point B. By the way, we have a buddy skeleton that we would volunteer for gibbet duty..... Diosa Diosa De Cancion aka Mary Read www.iammaryread.com

Matusalem
Hmm, I have already begun conceptualizing something that I plan on using for parades, halloween and PIP. **Prop source alert** Occasionally I walk by the most amazing (& freakiest) store in lower Manhattan called Evoution, they specialize in skeletons (human & animal) & weird bugs & weird rocks. I imagine one can find a mail-order human skull, the one in this store retail for about $90 and up.
hurricane
Wow! You can get them a lot cheaper on ebay. We got ours for $149 I think - full size, articulated, the same kind they use in schools but of imperfect quality so they didn't pass muster for classrooms. By the way, we have a buddy skeleton that we would volunteer for gibbet duty..... Diosa Oh not to fret dear Lady, the scenario will very much rely on the "locals" that live and work in the Fort area. We hope to tie all together so everyone gets their "moment in the spotlight!" Several locals will be leading people from the Fort down to the beach during the appropriate times... and several "arguments" will be settle in the Fort amongst them that be shipwrecked and also between the shipwrecked and the locals... after all we VERY MUCH still want those battles to continue... The map is a much needed item... Fayma should print it up when Master Studley is finished with it along with a schedule for handouts to be given to the spectators. A large edition should also be posted at a center point for them in the fort and them in the camp, where any conflicts or necessary changes can be quickly posted as well for all to see.... If one is concerned that the folks may skip out on purchasing a ticket at the fort and just make their way down to the shipwreck camp, we could have the camp there as well, contained with someone there on the "gate" as well, with a stamped hand, showing whether or not a ticket has been purchased... as to caged skeletons, since they seem to be such a hit, I would suggest a total of four then... one in the fort entrance and three others strategically placed through out the grounds... maybe we could make a hide and seek type of game out of them for the kids....they had an excellent questionnaire that was given to the kids at Paynetown... they had to talk to many of us in order to answer the questions and then receive a small prize... Haunting Lily told me that she's seen sales on the things where you could buy 10 of them for $60 a piece. Now that's a cheap skeleton. I confess, I'm not a big fan of 4th quality Bucky's. The last one I bought had a severely damaged rib cage. (He's going to be a scarecrow for Halloween - if he holds together and if I don't get too caught up in this pirate stuff to finish him.)
