my first attempt at hand sewing they are based off of patrick hands, they are 100% hand sewn. it took me about 25 hours, i used a alterd crapy not to be named jack sparrow drop front breecher patter. the belt with hanger is also a patrick hand patter based item.

Casket

Congratulations!

Nice job at taking the bull by the horns and making yourself a nice pair of slops.

They look great, and I am betting that you are getting a lot of satisfaction out of completing this project.

My GoF site gets a lot of questions from folks that ask "where can i get...." and I usually reply by saying that you can go a lot further in this hobby by learning some skills and making some items yourself.

Its not really that "hard", it just takes patiences and time (with a healthy dose of follow through).

Some projects are easier (like making a hat from a blank) but it builds confidence and a skill set that you can use later.

Nice jorb!! Although.....what about all the emotional support I gave you during the whole process? I guess now the only way I can one up you is to sew a pair of slops by hand but using my feet!!

You beat me by a couple of days. Just finished up a pair myself using the directions Mister Hand posted -- though I followed his example and cheated with the sewing machine a bit. Okay, a lot. And damn that thirteen inch ruler!

Comparing mine to yours, though, I'm thinking yours is the better job overall, Chris.

thanks for the comments... mine or yours the only thing that matters is we had the nerve to do it on our own... the one thing that you did that im still trying to decide on is the lace up in the back

It makes for a great sizing tool -- particularly helpful if you're sharing your pants with other folks (long story, don't ask).

I did leave the pockets off of mine, this pair was strictly experimental. Next one's with pockets, and more correct materials (used cotton homespun on these, on account of it being very cheap and on-hand).

Again, ye've done a fine job, mate!

i know its not super period but a good cheap fabric that i use is a canvas painters drop cloth for a 9x8 is only like $10 at a lowes or home depot, and they come in much bigger sizes if needed, thats what my guild uses for our captains quarters.

not the best pic but you get the point

Wow... I'm flattered, and impressed.... Great job.....

The ties in the back are kinda cool..... they let you adjust the waistband.... (not that none of us ever puts on a little extra weight ever..... )

I'm a firm beleaver in using cotton for starting garb.... (just be sure to pre-wash it so it shrinks) Hey.... hemp is a fantastic fabric.... but it's also more expensive....... I'd rather figure-out exactly what I'm doing with cotton than make any maistakes with the more expensive hemp....... Besides.... no one Is ever going to get close enough to check if it is linen, hemp or cotton anyway.....

Nicely done!

I have to agree with Pat though, the back waistband ties are a plus... after a winter of sitting around studying, some trousers/slops/breeches just have this funny tendency to shrink all by themselves... so the ties would allow one to let them out a bit at the beginning of the season and then take them back in as you lose all the weight working out at events! Also they are proper to the time frame (GAoP) if you are interested in the historical side of it all....

Zephaniah, thanks fer the link back t' Patrick's oringinal post, much appreciated mate.

Casket Chris, truthfully mate yer version looks first rate. I like the wider waist band wit' two buttons. Did ye create a paper pattern or modify the Sparrow breeches one free hand?

All this sharing of images of recent projects has gotten me into the mood as well.... So I made myself a pair of breeches based on the Royal Navy Slops contract descriptions.

Slop Contract Specs as posted by GoF

Strip’d Ticken Breeches of proper lengthes, lined with white linen, and two linen Pockets, with Sixteen Black Buttons, the Button Holes stich’d with Black Thread, at the rate of five Shillings each

I followed the slop contracts description and used the Reconstructing History pattern RH706 (kudos to you guys brave enough to draft your own patterns!). The one thing I couldn't get correct is black buttons, since I am still weighing my options for buttons and trying to decide what I will do, I used the brass(?) buttons sold to me by Mary Diamond as described in this thread.
