The Smallboat

Harry has secured a small boat from local boat builder T.J. McDermot. It is a six person skiff, originally named the Bernie B. It has seen some use, but it is still seaworthy. It just needs a coat of paint and two pair of oars.

As far as the name goes, Harry says that we can rename it for our purposes. I had considered naming it after one of the Mercury's small boats, but with so many camps utilizing the boat for other activities, I wasn't sure how this would be received, so a general name might serve better. We should also discuss whether or not we should give it a different paint job, or just keep the colors as they are.

The boat may also be rigged with a tilled and a sail, if anyone would like to make donations in that kind.

Yeah a little skiff, what fine skiff. Now I have no experiance with water craft but it looks like she had an outboard motor at one point. So would we want to fill that in? or just leave as is? As far as the condition of her goes what does she look like to the trained eye? Definitely needs some paint. The current colors look alright. I would like to vote for a rust color and white but whatever we come up with would be fine with me. :lol: Is harry planning on doing all the work himself? Maybe a couple of us Florida residents could go down there and help for weekend or something. Just trying to find lodging would be the expensive part. Hey we have a boat yea! PiP is going to rock this year. :lol:

I'm sure Harry would appreciate some added help locally. I too would like to see the use of red and other warm colors.

It did have a motor at one time, which we would replace with a tiller. I'm not certain about all of the alterations. Jim might have some ideas.

Since the Mercury seems to have brought this whole show together... I would have no problems with her being named after one of the Mercury's small boats... after all, no matter what she's named, my crew will steal her anyway... ;);)

If rum were laughter (and it technically is) that would be worth a keg or two at least. Such bravado. It cheered me up considerably.

If ye ask me, I think "Abrams" would be a fine name for this vessel.

Err, if you don't wanna name something after me, that's fine too. I wish I could be there to restore / use it.

As for restoration work, we definitely need someone a bit more local than I, though I would love to do the work.

I may be able to knock off some oars though. I'll need accurate measurements for beam and freeboard and knowing the length would help. Will the oarsmen need to sit side-by-side or is there room to stagger them? Will there be wooden oarlocks or bronze “pintle” type locks? Also I could do the tiller/rudder. For that I will need the transom height and some idea of how deep we want the rudder to go.

Filling in the motor well is a must.

As for mast/sails does anyone have the originals, photographs or drawings? Still, for the sake of expediency and cost, going for oars and passing on sails for now is probably the best idea unless there is someone very local and knowledgeable.

Lastly, and not to rain on the parade, you do know that the boat is OOP in a big way, right?

I will ask Harry to do detailed measurements when he can. He was only sure about the length at 12 feet. As for the motor well, can we perhaps cap the bottom and then put a hinged lid for storage of instruments? I kind of makeshift binnacle if you will.

And yes...way out of period, but anything to get us on the water short of aluminum or rubber.

It's OK that it's out of period. So is the Civil War fort and all the schooners down in KW. We'll all still have a blast!

Captain Jim, where would you be "knocking off" some oars for this boat? I haven't been able to locate any over 8' long for under a $100.

Any folks friends with the owners of this fine boat? It's in Hertford NC, circa 1730 style, only 3 years old, and is actually for rent. Maybe someone can convince them into participating in PiP this year.

I can build them. As I don't want to spend an unholy ammount, they would be glued up and painted. I'm thinking about 10-12 feet, blades 10-11 inches by two feet. Perhaps a square loom-and-pin instead of oarlocks. Ash if I could get it.
