Rats Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 OK so how would one make a hammock or where would someone buy one?? Rats No rest for the wicked! Wait a minute... that's me?!
Captain Jim Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 OK, so this dates from WW I, but it is a place to start. More as I find it. Edit: Clipped from http://www.westsea.com/tsg3/scrimlocker/Sc...crimchart02.htm "An exceptional, rarely found example of utilitarian sailor scrimshaw in the form of carved whale ivory hammock stays used to support a sailor's all important berthing in the foc'sle. The care and detail lavished on these whale tooth spreaders indicate the pride which ordinary seamen in the 19th century took with their personally made belongings. The heart shapes speak of the sailor's longing for his "terra firma" accommodations at home. Note the very distinctive discoloration and and surface wear telling of years of exposure and use in the adverse conditions aboard ship. The size of these 3 inch stays indicate that they were fashioned from huge teeth!" Decent, if non-attributed history Here. Getting closer. Official Royal navy hammock pattern, 1775, Here. My occupational hazard bein' my occupation's just not around...
Rumba Rue Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 My partner Boats, made his own hammock very much like the one in the above illustration. HOWEVER, he's only gotten to use it once.... There just aren't any trees around the right space to hang one....
pyrateleather Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 What about the "woven" net style hammock? Was this ever used on ships or mostly just an island style? They do talk about the style in the history link above but I wondered in relation to sailors & pirates. http://www.PyrateTradingCompany.com
callenish gunner Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 i have not seen the frabric of the weight that was used for hammocks in the service commercially available ...it was quite thick and hearty4-5 times more dense than commercial canvas available in the retail shops
