"The Drunken Sailor"

Lady Alyx

Recommended Posts

Hi, I keep humming this song, and it's driving me crazy. I am sure someone here knows the most appropriate lyrics. I have found different versions, but I would like to know which set of lyrics is the most accurate. Thanks ahead of time!

I have three "authentic" recorded versions and every one has different verses...

The only sort of common one between the numerous versions I've heard has been the "Throw him in the _____ with the captains daughter" With the blank being the location of the singers fancy.

Have ye tried: http://www.arrr.net/shanties/drunken_sailor.shtml

Here's the version thar:

What shall we do with a drunken sailor 3x

Ear-ly in the morning

Way, hey, up she rises 3x

Ear-ly in the morning

Put him in the long boar til he's sober 3x / Ear-ly…

Put him in the bilge and make him drink it

Put him in a leaky boat and make him bail her

Tie him to the scuppers with the hose pipe on him

Shave his belly with a rusty razor

Slit his pinky with a rusty razor

Tie him to the topmast while she's yardarm under

Heave him by the leg in a runnin bowline

Keel haul him til he's sober

Put him in the cabin with the captain's daughter

Put him in the cabin with the drunken sailor

I went to sea with a drunken sailor

Six long months in a leaky whaler

Put him in the hold and I made him bail her

Ear-ly in the morning

I've also heard that the line, "put him in bed with the captain's daughter" was originally, "give him a taste of the captain's daughter." The latter making more sense with the connotation behind captain's daughter.

Sea Captain: Yar, that be handsome pete, he dances on the pier for nickels!

Sea Captain: Arrr... you gave him a quarter, he'll be dancin all day.

I was at an event last year where the lead in the song looked to the audience for suggestions of what to do with him. It was rather humorous to hear what they suggested and how it was handled by the lead. He then ended with the verse "put him in bed with the captains daughter" followed by "have you seen the captains daughter"

Nice thing about shanties not being written down ...you can be a bit more creative with the repetitiveness of them!
