Lady Alyx
Hi, I keep humming this song, and it's driving me crazy. I am sure someone here knows the most appropriate lyrics. I have found different versions, but I would like to know which set of lyrics is the most accurate. Thanks ahead of time! ~~~~Sailing Westward Bound~~~~ Lady Alyx

Red-Handed Jill
We've created a few of our own verses: Put him in a dress and call him Sally Early in the morning Put him in a cage and call him Polly Early in the morning Forge his name and cash his paycheck Early in the morning Put him in a skirt and call him Scottish Early in the morning

Duchess
I have three "authentic" recorded versions and every one has different verses... The only sort of common one between the numerous versions I've heard has been the "Throw him in the _____ with the captains daughter" With the blank being the location of the singers fancy. Red-Handed Jill
I want authenic lyrics not made up ones. It's a chantey where the lyrics were often made up on the spot - that was the point. So in terms of "authentic", that's a very subjective term with this song.

Phillip Black
I've also heard that the line, "put him in bed with the captain's daughter" was originally, "give him a taste of the captain's daughter." The latter making more sense with the connotation behind captain's daughter. Sea Captain: Yar, that be handsome pete, he dances on the pier for nickels! Sea Captain: Arrr... you gave him a quarter, he'll be dancin all day.
Abrams
Some of the funnier variations I've heard are "Put in the movies and call him Johnny" and "Put him in the theatres and call it Disney." I've got the heart of a pirate, just not the garb...

Silkie McDonough
I was at an event last year where the lead in the song looked to the audience for suggestions of what to do with him. It was rather humorous to hear what they suggested and how it was handled by the lead. He then ended with the verse "put him in bed with the captains daughter" followed by "have you seen the captains daughter" Nice thing about shanties not being written down ...you can be a bit more creative with the repetitiveness of them! Lady Alyx
that last line reminds me of the Capital One Commercial when the King tells the Knight that he is now able to marry his daughter...did you see the daughter?...lol ~~~~Sailing Westward Bound~~~~ Lady Alyx
