  3. It can only be blamed on one person.

So there I was, mindin' me own business. When Oliver Sudden (that's a friend of mine) buys me a beer, whilst sitting next to the nefarious scoundrel, Robb... err, Hurricane.

We had been pillaging together once or twice, I noticed there was something about him that was unique amongst even other pirates. He was trubble with a capital "T" and a lot of "rubble." He liked to stir things up. Very piratey.

So there I sat, having just finished the last gig with my previous band, witness to the end of one era. Fate was about to step through the door.

Hurricane looks across the bar at me, and sez, "I have a proposition fer you. Two weeks in Key West. All you need to do is to learn the songs, [which I know you can do,] and wear a pirate costume, [which I know you have.] What say you, sir?"

I looked up at the ceiling and said, "Sounds interesting. Let me think about it."

Oliver reaches across and grabs me by the shirt: "Two weeks in Key West! Music! Pirates!!! What's there to THINK about??? Just do it!!!"

"You are right," I said. I turned back to Hurricane and replied. "I'm in."

Beginning of a new era. Nothing in myself or in my life has been the same since. Ah, the warm waters of the Caribbe... Adventures, rum, danger, love, fate, disaster, rum, hurricanes (4 of 'em,) music, more rum, sunsets that defy description, sailing, more rum, pillaging and much fun, frolicking and inspiration...

"Pirate, that's in yer blood mate, and ye'll have to square with that someday."

  4. The current POTC crewe, plus Lighthouse, Animal, Sloe Gin, Black Skot and Water Rat too??? This is going to be FUN!!!

Trubble with a capital "T" and a LOT of "rubble"!!!!

  5. Fleckenstein.

    fleck = spot or speck

    in = in

    stein = stone

    A flecked stone. Granite.

Then, the Americanized version would be "Frecklestone."

Yer a hard woman, Silkie...but yer freckles are so adorable!

  6. Alrighty mateys, I be just brimmin' wit' questions. But I'll keep it to ones that are pertinent to the task at hand:

    * Do the cards have to be the original artwork, or can we do one piece and reproduce it onto 10 cards?

I'm thinkin', bein' as we have one month, and as this is the band's busy season with festivals and all (we have four gigs within one week alone!) and a full 5 days of 10-hour recording sessions at the end of the month, it might be more prudent (heh, I rarely use THAT word...) to put a little more effort into one piece and make ten reproductions, if that's okay for this round.

    * What are the dimensions of the cards?

    * What kind of card/paper stock shouldst we use, or is that up to the individual?

    * and, just out of curiosity, how many participants do we have at the moment?

  7. Now here's an old thread, with old names I sort of recognize, and new names I am also glad to see...

My name is Michael (yes, the Archangel - that's what Mom had in mind) Kloepfer.

Most of you from civilian life know me as Mikey. Yup, the Life cereal commercial stuck - which, oddly enough, only really bothers my sister...

Now my last name is where it gets trippy.

I have a couple German guitar students who finally showed me how to pronounce it in proper German, umlauts and all; though I dare not try myself, lest I sprain my tongue.

I have heard many tales over the years about the origin of the name Kloepfer.

From another named Kleopfer, I heard that when the family came to America, they split and some used the "oe" and some used the "eo." Interesting.

My two favorite stories about the origins of the name in German are:

    * The clapper part of the church bell (loud and clamorous, yet simultaneously musical - I'm down with that.)

    * The large, spatula-like implement that housewives used to beat the carpets to get the dust out. I don't care if it's accurate, it cracks me up.

So, my favorite literal translation of my name is "Mikey Rugbeater."

    And there you have it.

    Rummy3? Really?... Nancy?

    "You mean... Audrey Farber...???"

  8. Heh, thanks for the sentiment Gertie, but you're probably right. Maybe next year!

Hey Michael - er, McCool... (sorry, old habits and all....) We could always carpool... somethin' to keep in mind for road trips/events in the future-

    Nigel

  9. AVAST, ye scoundrels and currs!!!

It is high tide and high time that ol' Nigel be tossin' his hat (pretty though it may be) back into the ring!!!!

Yes, the one-time crewe member of the Pyrates of the Coast, "Classic Collector's 21st Century Edition" will be hopping down off the Hogback and into the warm waters o' the Carribe (...and bring me coconuts full of rum drinks with little jolly rogers instead of umbrellys, if ye please, lass!!!)

It looks like oh-TEN will be a reunion year, what with Hurricane, Lighthouse, and myself - and I hear dirty little rumors of the possibility of Animal and other "Classic Collector's Edition" members reuniting at PiP oh-TEN. (C'mon, Sloe Gin - ya know ya wanna!!!)

So make fast the lines, no starch in the sheets (it chafes me bum) and fill the hold with cups o' gold and barrels full of rum!!!

I'm lookin' forward to drinkin' a toast to May babies, and sharin' a round with me long time mates and newfound friends!!!

    -Nigel

    aka Jackpot

P.S. I saw a Margaritaville Margarita Mix commercial today. How prophetic! I'm in a Key West state o' mind, mateys!!!!

  10. Okee dokee. Here are a couple pix from the museum:

    The Auburn:

    DSCF3160_25.jpg

    And the Buick:

    DSCF3112_35.jpg

The front end is EXACTLY like mine. I remember the first weekend I had it, I set about polishing the grille. It took the whole weekend!

There were dozens of beautiful, rare automobiles. The whole trip was a blast!

I have many more pix, larger ones too, which I posted to my personal blog, rather than tying up this thread.

Anyone who is interested, go to:

  11. What vehicle would you own if you could?

Personally, I have always thought the Auburn Boattail Speedster was the most beautiful car ever made. Having recently visited the Auburn/Cord/Duesenberg museum in Auburn, IN on my way to Paynetown, I can even show you pictures (...and I even like the color.)

Aye, mate - ye be a man after me own heart (or wallet, I wager...)

I have always been a fan of antique automobiles. My dad's friend collected antique Lincolns, and introduced me to the guy who sold me my first car - a 1958 Buick Special, which I bought at a5 years old, restored, and kept for over 20 years. When i moved to Seattle, I sold it to a collector in Sweden.

As far back as I can remember, my all-time dream car was a late-30's Auburn Boattail Speedster.

Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting the Clive Cussler Museum in Denver, and saw some excellent examples of the Auburns there. I'll see if I can dig up some photos. Some of the autos were strange - Cussler has this uncanny knack for painting antique cars in bizarre colors.

  12. Alas, me hearties, it is with a heavy heart that I answer the roll call...

It pains me to say that I shall not be able to make this year's PiP. I would so love to spend more quality pirating time with my *ahem* "quality" pirate friends, but the situation won't allow it this year.

I shall keep in touch with Hurricane and the crewe, and keep my eye on the horizon. I'll find a way to get down to FLA for some pillaging and drinking of rum.

If any of you rascals happen to be going through Colorado, don't hesitate to drop me a PM, it would be great to get together! I've been landlocked for too long.

Until then, keep a weather eye... Ye've not heard the last of Nigel!!!
