  1. Sideshow announced two rev war figures for May, a red coat and a delaware regiment soldier.
  2. That's a good one, Deacon! I was going to say "But what about Omar Sharif?" but he's not an American citizen or resident, or an Oscar winner. So I didn't say it. Except just then, when I told you what I intended to do, and didn't.
  3. Wow, I would never have even considered the Formative Int'l/SOTW Rev War figures because, well, for so many years SOTW was so crappy. You know what I mean: they had those barely articulated figures, those clothes that fastened with velcro, rifles and pistols that seemed to be in different scales. However, since 2000, SOTW has become my favorite low-cost accessory manufacturer, with pistols with removable clips, M-1 and carbines with movable bolts. They've really impressed me. But the rev. war figs, huh? I'll have to check that out.
  4. I don't think it's a treasure at all. I think it's a horiffic monster who couldn't be slain, ala grendel, so they bound it, imprisoned it, and buried it alive two-hundred feet below sea level, with the booby trap designed to prevent anyone from coming close to freeing it. I don't really believe that, but it would make a hell of a movie, wouldn't it?
  5. Now, it might do for looks, but not accuracy, but I recall seeing wicker chests at Hobby Lobby. Why they were at Hobby Lobby, I'll never know.
  6. Let me just say, with all candor, that what I've noticed the most about straightedge and emo kids (and noise and math rock kids, too, for that matter. And the 'working class' oi kids) is this: They think they know what's real, they think they know what's better, and so they can appropriate old ideas and pretend those ideas are their own. Now, I'm leery of joiners, and people who adhere to a strict look, play the cool game, and choose their friends according to these tropes. Of course, we all do that, usually younger than older. I've done it, and I confess I love the pirate look. But I acknowledge where I came from, don't create a false back story to match what I wish I was like, and choose my friends on how well I get along with them. My best friends and I don't like the same movies, music, politicians or religions, but we have the same sense of humor. Aw, I don't even know what I'm talking about. My sciatic is acting up again. Let's talk about tattoos.
  7. While perusing my mothers collection of "old" fabrics (bolts of wool she has kept from the fifties, and, with the help of mothballs, kept hole-free) I noticed some wonderful herring-bone wool just dying to be made into a frock coat. But I have no idea if herring-bone, as a pattern, existed in the early 1700's. It is amazing to think of how modern some 'old" things are to us. So. Does anyone have any notion of when some now-common patterns or weaves appeared? I'm thinking of herring-bone, houndstooth, and that sort of 'classic' style, but really, any number of things could be discussed. Thinking of hand-painted slops, any sort of printed pattern is up for question, too.
  8. Well, I admit I enjoy the photos, but after looking at ye lasses' bosoms I have a tendency to drop me jaw. Just today, in fact, the guy from the mail room ran over me tongue with his cart.
  9. Aye, but the problem is getting everyone to coordinate their budgets at the same time.
  10. Well, for starters, the best thing you could do would be to just browse the old threads of this site. That ought to give you plenty of ideas, and then when you have a specific question or problem you need help with, toss out a question.
  11. must.... refrain .... from ...crude ...comment
  12. I don't know if a festival per se is the goal of this thread....I don't know if there even is a goal. I think if we were to start an organization, maybe an informal network (which we already have, so maybe this is moot) the festival or event will follow. It just might start with meeting each other at existing events, or making small, local meetings. And there's nothing wrong with kids. But there are existing organizations that let them hang around. Nothing here will preclude the members from participating in these other events or organizations. I wouldn't want to be part of an organization so exclusive. But I think there is room for an organization for legal adults only - and I'm not thinking of anything kinky. I just don't feel comfortable getting rude and drunk in front of kids.
  13. Well, if the same events take place at a slightly younger pirate gathering, then slightly younger pirates will just have to organize it. I'm not trying to be rude, or be a jerk. I don't consider myself an old salt. I think I'm pretty darn young myself. But in this day and age if you get good and properly debauched in front of a legal minor, you'd best be prepared for serious legal action.
  14. Well, this organization doesn't even exist yet. It may take us two years to get it off the ground. Then you can come.
  15. It's nice to see some more traffic on the thread... I don't see that this has to particularly compete with any other pirate organization, and I don't see why it wouldn't be compatible with existing organizations. The difference, I guess, would be this is for adults. And it's not that I don't like kids. But if I plan on going out into the woods and get good and irresponsible, well, I'd like to get good and irresponsible. And it's hard to get irresponsible in front of kids. Now, the logistics would be a headache. I haven't thought much about that.
  16. That's the way to do it, mate. Go for it all, and grab all the gusto you can get.
  17. *shifts eyes guiltily from side to side* Um....
  18. As noted in the "Ren-faire Vs. Re-enactment" thread, the idea of an adult-oriented, neither exclusively fantastic or exclusively historical and pirate-specific organization tailored to the expectations of the members of this site has been suggested, and seemed to garner at least some small element of support. The name "The Society for the Unwanted" has been suggested. I think it's grand name. So, I guess this is a thread were we can see who's interested, what we expect, how to organize and then see if the dang thing will even work.
  19. Gosh, I guess I'd go with English lock. If, for some reason, a large sum of money befalls you, and you feel inclined to spend it on weapons, you can accessorize with a QA or JL, if that floats your boat. But the english lock seem more versatile.
  20. What sort of pistols do ye already have? It might be nice to mix it up a little.
  21. I have several gauze shirts with lace up collars I got for $13 at Walmart, of all places.
  22. Well, I don't mean to tell anyone their business, anyway. That's just the sort of officious thing I hate. I realize that my actually saying "don't buy an original" can only be construed as an order, and for that I apologize. I did over-step my boundaries. But....... I still think it's a bad idea. Hawkyns has a good point about the prices NOT being very comparable. If you can get an original for three hundred bucks, well, be careful what you buy. And I know that Disney can buy originals and use them for whatever, but would the movie be any less enjoyable if they used top-of-line repros? I mean, they used repros anyway, for back-ups and firing and fighting, so it just seems a little unnecessary. For Wild, Wild West, they destroyed a western town that had stood since the thirties, while over two hundred movies and several hundred TV shows had been filmed there. And when they were done, the director didn't like what he had, so he built a miniature of the town, blew that up and digitally altered it. For a minute of screen time in a lousy movie! Don't get me wrong. I am in no way saying POTC was a lousy movie. Quite the contrary, I think it's great. But it just seems so unnecessary. And I'm not necessarily advocating saving your guns for your grandkids. It's much more selfish than that. If a good example of 18th century craftsmanship is ruined or destroyed, that's one more original for craftsman to reproduce. I don't much relish the thought of carrying a repro modeled after a repro. But does it bother me much? Compared to all the truly troubling things in the world, not particularly.
