Commodore Swab

Low and behold, I went with a friend to the hardware store this morning and since his wife was along we stopped at a couple yard sales on the way back. At one there was a small bit set up across the steet on a single table. As I drew closer I could see simply a pile of clothes . . . YET as I drew closer still there be a couple stocks on the table, rapidly I saw that one was a simple 12 gauge shotgun (nothing special and under closer examination the stock was broken) and the other a black powder rifle. The box next to the rifle was filled with all the "goodies" including ramers, caps, adjustable measure, flask, and much more as it was almost shoe box size. There was even a can unopened of pyrodex (YUCK). Anyways the price was worth it so I bought the rifle which turned out to be a finished (not from kit) thompson center fire with double set triggers. Although not being PC it is still very very cool to find at a yard sale and as I can use most of the stuff once some friends of mine get back into town to look at it (just to look) I will most likely put her up for sale and pass her on to someone who can use her more than me.

If you come across any I would be interested. Our only salvation army store has prices higher than the stores.

That is good to know they are permitted, something very similar is all that we need for the crimson crew so you don't need to worry about a "fire pit" for our crew. I will keep looking for wood here by the way.

Any ideas where I can get a pair of boots like that? They look very similar to period spanish sea boots (not bucket boots).

I've always enjoyed Half Shell Raw Bar, good food and they have a good happy hour. If I remember right you can get a couple dozen oysters and a pitcher of beer for about $15. They have lots of other fish sandwiches etc.

I will keep my eyes open for wood here locally, there is a very good chance I will find a good amount that has been cut and is waiting to be cleared. I can't guarantee how dry it will be but the sooner I find it the sooner I can start it drying.

.75 caliber is 3/4 of an inch, .50 caliber is half inch. I was interested in the outside diameter where the powder is packed, where the lock is. Also it would be helpful to know the diameter at the muzzle.

If things go as planed I may be there a day or two early and if you don't mind sleeping on deck there may be a place to crash on my boat.

Why not just take the lock off and carry it with you then you would only have to ship one box as gun parts?

Once again if anybody needs to they can ship to my address here in the Keys and I can bring it to PiP, I should be going by boat (arriving on monday or tuesday) so I will have pleanty of room on board. If anything arrives after I have left it can be brought the rest of the way by Shay or the Viceroy.

I have all that, I'm just trying to find musket balls for a .75 cal. musket! That seems to be the trick at the moment. Any ideas? We're going to the gun club on the 12th and I need to be able to shoot. Out of curisoity what is the diameter at the breech of that 75 cal musket?

IF memory serves me which is a big if. . . The Incas who are famous for having so much gold did not mine or collect any of it, in fact they mined salt and traded it with others for gold.

The reason I mention a small fire is that most likely my wife will want to do some PC Thai cooking and would need a centralized fire she could cook on top of (roughly the size of a large burner much smaller than a BBQ). It might be possible to bring a small clay stove and borrow some coals from the fire at the hide? All in all we are looking for something small she can light when she wants to do some cooking, not a fire pit for a fire always burning.

I believe all the crimson crew will need is roughly 10X10 with room for fire pit. All we really need is room for a single tent and we will be camping PC, if its possible to place us near the Mercury crew so much the better.

Personally I know that the cannon I fire has a range of about 3 miles. I have never fired anything out of it except blanks, sometime I would like to take it to a range where I can safely proof it. Even after proofing I know that if I ever want to fire something out of it I need to make sure I need to ensure it is in a safe place where there is nothing for miles or at a range. Reading some of the posts makes me thing of the movie V for Vendetta when the "terrorist" is broadcasting and in his broadcasting is describing who is at fault for people living under an overpowering government. His words go roughly along the lines of "you need only look in a mirror, I know why you did it. You wanted saftey and security and all he asked in return was your quiet obedience" Many aspects of that film remind me where our society is going today. Work spend your money get your car, your house, have you kids, and follow all our rules, don't think for yourself or try anything new as you might get hurt. How many of us learned common sense to look before crossing a street? Now we have school zones, flaggers, flashing lights, cross walks etc. There was a time when it was natural for a child to know enough to help an older lady across a street, I wonder if those days are disappering as well?

Well said, the authorities always seem to be looking for an excuse to pass more laws.

I got it all figured out, the little bar that seemed to engage the trigger in fact is suposed to rotate 180 degrees and engages the trigger (part of the lock) on the outside of the lock plate. I hadn't wanted to force it so I had not tried rotating it that far.

I can see it now, lots of animation and action. South Park had an intestering run on imangination land a couple years ago. To me looking at the number of remakes and TV show movies it seems that we are running out or surpressing the original thinkers.

I received the lock today . . .

I am working on a new musket and was wondering about the trigger assembly for a shaphaunce lock musket. There is a small bar that must slide down and engage the trigger. Does anybody have any knowledge with these locks?
