  1. as far as issurance goes...this has been a debate for decades within all the comunities....no good outcome as of yet. i personally tend to shun events that require me to pick up my own participation ryder(other than my own personal)....and frequent those that cover us under their ryder....over the years...more an more venues are threatning to start requiring us as a group as well as individuals just to participate....or the "maybe next year"...because most of them were being threatned by the issurance companies of raising their policies.... and that effcts the bottom line of any event....and Mickey...you will find less and less evnts if the issurance policies strat raising and their arnet profits being made(by anyone except the issurance companies)..... the fear now is....with the Health Care/Issurance debacle going on...the insurance companies stand to lose billions in profit...where do you think they will start squeasing stones to make up the difference??? i hope not my stones!!! am i advocating participant issurance.....no way...i am advocating the get rid of the need for them.... but if/when it comes to a time...that ALL events will start passing the buck...on to the participants...then a umbrella coverage might be the way to go...might
  2. Gah! No thanks. I merely wanted to point out that, even if the East coast governing body (by some miracle) actually worked, then a few years down the road, the West coast decided to create their own governing body, then, say the South and Midwest does the same...who then governs the governing bodies? Each coast, or midland, is going to have different priorities, depending on the number and type of events held in their part of the world. I don't think one set of rules is going to work for each region. I would also be afraid these satellite governing bodies would end up creating more regional differences within the pyracy community than there already are. Oh, and I vote for M.A. d'Dogge for Pyrate King, just as soon as he's done with the dishes. who would rule over all dominions???.... why the Pyrate King...of course fyne...i accept and my first decree..... ....back to the dishes....
  3. i seem to recall a Gent...that was purposing this very thing ...in the Mid-West quite some time ago...suggested a meeting of the minds...from every venue groups/and individuals alike....to try an organise an overall body of pirates of every nature to defend one another as well as help with venues as well as knowledge..... ....and all he asked in return....to be named...Pyrate King... .... love him, obey him, do everything he asked....and he would be your slave.... whatever happend to him???.... ..... oh yeah...he was caught red handed stealing off a venders table...cops drug him away in public...and was banned from all MId West events.... ....and so missed the meeting..... ...i wonder where he is now?? WELL...in his absence....i would like to take the oppurtunity...to throw MY NOMINATION...for said PYRATE KING!! i swear to up hold My ideals....excluding all others at my discretion...and dole out Justice with impunity...and...and.... wait...got to go....the wife will get angry if i dont finish the dishes....
  4. Agreed - any group must maintain an influx that at least matches the outgoing membership in order to survive. However, (and I am just asking in a general sense, not because I am against the idea of anyone organizing or organizations in a broader sense) as I previously stated - the funnel of organizational filters allows for a group to become slightly better at what it already does - allowing for subtle changes....but what happens when an overhaul is needed? When the reach needs to exceed anything that has been reached for previously? In my experience, that can kill an organization just as well as anything else. (as in, the group that bites off more than it can chew and slowly collapses from within...like a flan in a cupboard! ) I think I this point we are bordering on semantics...which is better, an idea or a belief? (According to Kevin Smith - A belief is something people will kill or die for - ie, the crusades...an idea is a lot more maleable and able to accommodate change...and therefore less killing, I suppose. heh) Which is better, an organization or a group? sorry...wasnt meaning to imply membership growth...more of an internal look at ideals and group philosophy.....blahblahblah...
  5. Granted, I try to stay from absolutes in my statements....at the same time, isn't part of the (implied) purpose of an organization to sustain itself? And doesn't that therefore lend credence to the idea that changes of a broader swipe are negatives due to the impact they invariably have on said organizations? ie - couldn't it be argued that organizations stand in opposition to change? again...not nescarilly....once a group stops growing...it eventually dies(in my humble opinion)...a groups goals should never become sstagnant...should always have something to reach for...should not be about simpley excisting...but to accomplish something oe at least thats what i personally push within groups that i am associated with.
  6. Happy Burthinday!!...first rounds on the Captain!!.... ok...2nd and 3rd probably are too.....!!
  7. ...i think they ....CAN as act as formidable barriers....depending on WHO is maning the filter....and can be dangerous for a group if they dont temper it with another funnel...to get ideas from. but to have a group successful...i do believe that funnels...as well as filters are needed....there are formulas that work for what is trying to be accomplished...and they should continue to be used...as long as there are new formulas being tried out as well...with the goal to improve.
  8. are ya sure??....they kinda look like "buckets" pulled alla way up.... i thought "sea boots" were just made differently...kinda keepin your feetsy dry...but not so good for anything else???...kinda hand made-ish anyone got any references to What made SEA BOOTS...SEA boots ...and not just BOOTS????

Cold....(sputter).......January......(snort)........FLORIDA.....(spittle) oh my god....i just spit milk thru my nose...... oh.....you were serious.....ahhhh...eh hem.....(cough)....'scuse me.... those events (the all inclusives)...can be a blast...(seriously Hurricane...you should attend one as a participant)...as well as a real burden....used to do a private one...frechmans frolic....no public....no modern...period....live shoots...real game(food)....real cold... late november early dec(Wisconsin)....just remeber running round in a kilt...following each others barefoot prints in the frost....then the year it snowed 3 feet durring the event....great times...and the learning experience was invaluable. as far as Kids....i have always been involved with "family freindly" groups...wouldnt have it any other way....its like having 20 or so Aunts and Uncles help Watching if not raising the kids...caint wait till "Mamma" will let me start bringin mine.... ...dont ask...long story
  10. personally i see nothing wrong with a FEW "Invite Only" events...that set the bar for re-enacting higher than other events...whatever the time line....i have only seen events with WAITTING LINES to be invited....for bragging rights if nothing else....there are plenty of other events to get newbies feet wet....(one of my first was a wild west event...wore a taped on muostache... ).....and i personally advocate "mentoring" programs...for some of us who have been re-enacting for some time now(20+)...to help bring in new blood....and to help them start their path to the dark side....MUhahahaha should ALL events be this way?...probably not....is it ok if a few are..yep....it gives us all something to strive for...so each of us...newbies to 20+ ers and beyond....to continue to grow....to constantly strive to grow within our impressions. if i dont get a new addition to my Kit every year...i start to get stagnant and throw fits... .....but is there room for all levels within the community?....Yep...but probably not at every event.... done rambling

  18. Hawkins, in the past, swords have been restricted to a "fight circle" and the Bone Island Buccaneers "fight master" oversaw the rules and regs of said "fight circle"...consisting mainly of choreographed "fights" with a practiced partner.... there were no "sword fighting" durring battle scenarios.... i do know that their..."fight master"...has stepped away from the host group...and am not aware of who has stepped into that role...as of yet. i would like to see some..."hand to hand" ...durring the battle scenarios...and would like to work out a plan to do so safely with various members....as well as discuss at length you and your groups "style and techniques"...to see what can be worked out. once things are a little more nailed down...we shall include you in the loop.
  19. these might help narrow it down a bit.... Harley, R., "Artists' Brushes-Historical Evidence from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century", IIC Lisbon Congress, 1972-Conservation of Paintings and the Graphic Arts, p. 123-126 this might be helpfull.... http://www.northernlightstudio.com/index.html and this article talks about creating BURNT-PLATE OIL...for both printing and paint(used by Rembrandt) http://www.northernlightstudio.com/burnoil.php i can see that last one being used as a demo...
