All things considered, would it be beyond the realm of possibility for the flag to be made of canvas or linen simply painted black with either a painted on or sewn on design of white canvas ? Seems to me that the needed materials were already at hand. Painted fabric would be a bit stiff at first, but would soon soften from flapping in the breeze. Much simpler than obtaining a large piece of black dyed cloth, and a replacement could easily be made when needed. Any thoughts on that idea ??

All of this makes me wonder, why a pirate would bother to keep a journal or diary of any kind. Certainly not to be able to show a higher authority that he had been busy doing his job, like a naval or merchant captain might need to. A logbook would hardly be important for the same reason, other than to make note of important details like location of sandbars, shoals and the like. I think the artist based it on what seamen were wearing at the time the illustration was comissioned, and apparently had no studio props to base detail on, thus the poorly rendered weapons. Blackbeard's appearance was apparently based on the artist's imagination, and whatever descriptions he could get from his client. >>>>> Cascabel

If it was first published in 1736, it was most certainly not drawn from life! So many of the early illustrations are notoriously innacurate as to proportion and details. I suspect that the artists never even used a costumed model for reference, and just made the illustrations according to what they imagined the character looked like. If you look at the pistols, they are also poorly rendered. Even the tree does not look like anything that actually exists. The old woodcuts are even worse than the engravings for reference purposes.

If it's broken and you have the pieces, they can often be repaired. I have had pretty good luck with welding and re heat treating mainsprings.

Regarding the eyepatch thing....... If there was any basis in fact about that, it would have been common practice among ALL seamen, including merchants, fishermen, naval personnnel, etc. No written reference to the practice exists that I am aware of. I had never heard of it before the Mythbusters episode. Pure horse manure, like so many other things that make the rounds on the Internet !!!! (One of my favorites being the excuses for Jack Sparrow style eye make-up on pirates. Oh, yes, it certainly does. Especially if you use some buckram along the CF, too--keeps it from flopping forward and gives some support to buttons and button holes. I am curious about the padding "'tween shoulder and pecs" though. Something I haven't seen yet. Do you have a visual (inside of a coat, perhaps?) .......And what, exactly is the "CF" ????
