  1. Sterling’s first thoughts had settled upon the words betrayed. Surely Lilly could not be serious? He knew only too well of her lifestyle. Had she not refused his proposal because she was used to being kept and kept well by the likes of Lord Darnely and other men of quality? But a child? And his? He remembered pulling his hands beneath the table to hide their shaking and then changing his mind all together, he stood, shoved them into the wide ends of his banyan sleeves and brought his arms tightly about body. Slowly he made his way to the window and began to pace back and forth before it hugging himself and waiting for his heart to move back up from whence it had fallen into his stomach. He remembered turning to the actress at one point and opening his mouth to speak but nothing would come out. He watched her as she continued to cry and could only think back on their night together and now this? My God, what just happened, he thought over and over again. He did not know how long it had taken before his second attempt to continue their conversation, but he remembered stopping in front of the window and gazing down into the street. He could not remember what he saw there only that he finally whispered the words, “My sons with Tess, be all gone now. Does this child still…” By God it was difficult to form the words. Sterling swallowed hard, trying to bring some moisture back to his mouth. “Does this child still... live?”
  2. Also.... taking a deep breath and starting in again... two buttons at the waistband.... were these running vertical or horizontal? Any actual sizes given for the buttons as well??
  3. Well then the debate now becomes, how wide? what exactly does open knee breeches mean as far as dimensions? My question, looking at some of the pictures in Foxe's collection, would also have to include, where exactly do breeches end and trousers begin? A number of the pants seem to be more mid calf and certainly open but not what I would think Kass is referring to as the very wide, almost like petticoat breeches of the earlier 1660s which do seem to make a reappearance come the Am. Rev. War. Does anyone know whether the term open kneed breeches has anything to do with the way they were closed/fastened...ie.. could those that just tied at the bottom be considered "open" as there are no buttons running down the side of the leg at the opening?? Can anyone clear this up for me?
  4. Sterling sat there.... to say the least... stunned. The knocking on the door continued. "Go AWAY!" the captain finally roared.
  5. Whew... lots to yer question. Best bet would to go to Captain Twill and start searching the threads there... you would have sword, scabbards and baldricks or waist carriages depending on your time frame. As for pistols you can always tuck em in your belt or waistband or sash(again sashes depend on yer time frame as they did go out of style by the 1700s and then it appears only officers wore them). Again start in Twill and the good reenactors there will help push ye in the proper direction.
  6. It really depends Pat, on where ye want to go with yer gear. For fun or for accuracy, would really make a difference in the price... for our crew, we do the sewing/labour for nothing but folks do need to get the proper fabrics, buttons, narrow wares, weapons, shoes etc... so we may save some costs but not all....
  7. “My word the days go fast around here,” Sterling thought as he watched through the room’s window as Symms escorted the actress to his inn for dinner. The look of her in red silk nearly stopped the breath in his lungs. “Why will ye not say yes to me?” he sighed and then turned back toward the room. He had spent the day in bed as Symms attended to a feast he could only imagine being able to pay for…perhaps there would be some coin left over after the ‘Angel was finished being cared for. He had very little left to pawn. He closed his eyes and pressed his fingers to them. At least his letter to the Empress was on its way. “Godspeed,” he muttered, wishing for a safe and speedy journey for it and the rest of them that delivered it for him. He glanced across the room as Symms pushed open the door and allowed Lilly McKinney to enter. Sterling pulled his banyan closed tightly about him…. Certainly she could see his heart pounding in his chest?
  8. a 25 year old Tawny Port and a good pipe
  9. Sterling looked down at her, still bristling slightly to have found her on the arm of another ship's captain... and a French dog to boot. "What is more private than the busy streets? Methinks no one knows thee here save I and my crew," he said. He shook his head. "Please," the actress whispered a second time. Sterling sighed. Then glanced around knowing Symms was most likely still dogging his heels but now at a respectable distance. "Mayhaps it is something that can wait until later. Would ye care to join me for dinner? I feel the need to go lay me down for a spell yet. I came only seeking thee for thee dropped a letter in the streets earlier on. I needed to know that my letter was safe tis all."
  10. It was almost an hour later that Sterling spotted her. He found the actress, strolling upon the arm of the Captain, upon the decks of the Lucifer. Sterling stood on the docks, the wind completely knocked from his sails as he watched the young woman flirt with the other captain. Symms, out of breath not from what he witnessed but from pursuing his charge, finally caught up to Sterling. Doubling over besides the younger man, Symms gasped, “Pay it no heed sir, perhaps she is haggling over the price of postage!” Sterling shot the servant an evil look then proceeded to launch into his own stupidity where the actress was concerned. “Mistress McKinney!” he hailed her from the dock.

  12. Said to have been passed down by the ancient Incas, Liar's Dice is a game of bluffing and chance. Each player attempts to out-bid, out-bluff and out-last their opponent by issuing bids or challenges. Liar's Dice comes with four shakers and four sets of five dice. Beautifully packaged in a wooden dice-box, Liar's dice is suitable for display in a home or office. Above info from yesteryeargames.com...
  13. Not a problem Patrick. We'll stall things in port for awhile... Hector
  14. Congratulations the best to you! That won't be one day quickly forgotten!!
  15. Sterling waited impatiently as Hazzards hurried from the inn. Symms stood and watched his captain fidget knowing all too well keeping him in bed now would be nigh impossible. It was only a matter of moments before Sterling flung back the bed clothes and ordered Symms to fetch him his clothes again. "But sir?!" the steward protested. "But nothing! Damn it man I need to find that McKinney woman! And I need to find her now!" Sterling said angrily, holding his hand out for his breeches. "Yer health sir!" "If I lose the Archangel Symms, the ague won't kill me... The Empress will!" Sterling replied, tugging his garments from the tight fingers of the older servant.
  16. After a dizzying walk through town, Sterling and his “keepers” finally arrive at his temporary new lodgings. The captain is quickly stripped of his clothes and turned back into nightshirt , filled with noxious tasting medicines, and put back to bed. “You may go Master Hazzards, “ Sterling remarks brusquely. “Or are thee, also, going to stand watch over me, like my other Mother Hen, Master Symms?” The captain, clearly annoyed with his recent situation, casts a glance over at the other officer, who has firmly planted himself by one of the room’s windows. “Beggin your pardon Sir, I shall be on my…..” the second officer’s voice trails off. It is evident to the others in the room that his attention is firmly focused on something transpiring in the street. Sterling sighs, thumps the pillows soundly behind him, where upon Symms jumps to his assistance. “I can manage well enough Master Symms. I am not dead yet,” the captain growls only to give up to his steward’s doggedness. Sterling grudgingly settles down into the bed as the older servant continues to fuss over him. “Bloody hell…” Hazzards mumbles from his perch. He turns, somewhat excited, as the sounds of a brawl erupt from the street below. “Your lady friend, Sir.” “A bit bold are we?” Sterling snaps, finally pushing Symms away from him with a scowl, which he transfers to the other officer. “Ah… beggin yer pardon sir. But an acquaintance of yours… Mistress McKinney, the actress…just passed by below….” Hazzards said. For the briefest of seconds even Matthew Hazzards could see the captain’s face pale as he listened to the other man’s report and now listened to the sounds of an all out free-for-all pouring through the upper window. “Not to worry sir. She’s gone, passed through before the melee began. Just that she’s managed to drop a letter in the street. Some miscreant, slipped his shackles and retrieved it only to start this current scrap and has now disappeared into the back streets with it.” “A letter you say?“ Sterling asks suddenly setting up in the bed. Once again pushing Symms away, the captain attempts to join Hazzards at the window but rapidly gives up when his efforts are blocked by the steward. “Aye sir,” Hazzards replies. “Did you get a good look at the rogue that made off with it?” “Well enough.” “Good God, man then be off after him and retrieve it. She were to post a letter of mine! We may not be able to afford the delay!”
  17. Well I, almost, have no choice. We go TONIGHT.. I have three kids (one of which is my spouse!) I have practically "seen" the entire movie on TV, with both of the actual kids glued to every possible show regarding PoTC, the Making of PoTC, the Gossip surrounding PoTC, etc., etc. They have read all the books already and even though I keep asking them to remain mute on the plot, I am constantly barraged with "Can we tell you this one part...plllllllllllllleeeeeaaaasssseeee... it's realllllly funny!" I love my kids, they are hard to resist but I fear there won't be too many surprises left by the time I get dressed, Yes I've been begged to wear my GAoP clothing to the theaters, which will GREATLY unsettled the intelligentsia of Charlottesville... So, in the end, I am looking forward more to upsetting my neighbors than actually seeing the flick...
  18. Well Johnny Tarr if you are looking for a crew to join, you may want to consider signing up with the folks of The Archangel. Newbies don't frighten us one bit. Besides, we would love to take ye under our wing and keep ye from running about in bucket top boots... A number of us are located in Wisconsin. Actually we have crew members based pretty much mid-west as well as east coast, PA, VA, NY, IL. Many of us are "old" to reenacting but, some, fairly new to GAoP. As far as dedication to "getting it right" it is our main goal... we've gotten high marks from Kass McGann, bless her twisted little self, but we also make it another goal to entertain as well as educate... and just plain have fun!! If you would be interested give us an email.... Your humble servant, Hector
