The Deep-Sea Cables The wrecks dissolve above us; their dust drops down from afar - Down to the dark, to the utter dark, where the blind white sea-snakes are. There is no sound, no echo of sound, in the deserts of the deep, Or the great grey level plains of ooze where the shell-burred cables creep. Here in the womb of the world - here on the tie-ribs of earth Words, and the words of men, flicker and flutter and beat - Warning, sorrow and gain, salutation and mirth - For a Power troubles the Still that has neither voice nor feet. They have wakened the timeless Things; they have killed their father Time Joining hands in the gloom, a league from the last of the sun. Hush! Men talk to-day o'er the waste of the ultimate slime, And a new Word runs between: whispering, 'Let us be one!'

Ghosts at Sea Ghosts at sea row through my mind mysteriously, but not hauntingly. They ride the crested waves of my feelings because today the ocean is calm and gray. Their old fermented tales wade along side sunken schooners..... Barnacles bog down flotsam as reflections of jetsam buckle, roll and drift, fading away: out of sight..... A tarnished brass telescope lies blind beneath the faint glassy water. The ships wheel is now controlled by currents and tides.........Destination unknown... And I, I’m walking into the murky, yellow, low lying sun with wet feet... A rusting anchor settles on my lower jaw: My head is heavy. Sandpipers scamper before me, weaving; braiding a path down the shoreline. Simplicity is captivating; It’s their inherited routine. A pleasure to watch.... They don’t seem to be affected by these ghosts at sea... Unlike me...

THE SEA! the sea! the open sea! The blue, the fresh, the ever free! Without a mark, without a bound, It runneth the earth’s wide regions round; It plays with the clouds; it mocks the skies; Or like a cradled creature lies. I ’m on the sea! I ’m on the sea! I am where I would ever be; With the blue above, and the blue below, And silence wheresoe’er I go; If a storm should come and awake the deep, What matter? I shall ride and sleep. I love, O, how I love to ride On the fierce, foaming, bursting tide, When every mad wave drowns the moon Or whistles aloft his tempest tune, And tells how goeth the world below, And why the sou’west blasts do blow. I never was on the dull, tame shore, But I lov’d the great sea more and more, And backwards flew to her billowy breast, Like a bird that seeketh its mother’s nest; And a mother she was, and is, to me; For I was born on the open sea! The waves were white, and red the morn, In the noisy hour when I was born; And the whale it whistled, the porpoise roll’d, And the dolphins bared their backs of gold; And never was heard such an outcry wild As welcom’d to life the ocean-child! I ’ve liv’d since then, in calm and strife, Full fifty summers, a sailor’s life, With wealth to spend and a power to range, But never have sought nor sighed for change; And Death, whenever he comes to me, Shall come on the wild, unbounded sea! Barry Cornwall (1787–1874)

Magazine doesn't fit with the meter of the poem, so a minor point of acuracy was sacrificed for the sake of art.

The Flying Dutchman Twas on a dark and stormy night well southward of the Cape, And from a stiff nor'-wester we'd just made our escape. Like an infant in his cradle rocked, ihe breeze lulled us to sleep, While peacefully we ploughed along the bosom of the deep. At last the helmsman gave a shout of terror and of fear, As if he had just gazed upon some sudden danger near. We looked all round the ocean and there upon our lee We saw the Flying Dutchman come bounding through the sea. Take in all flowing canvas, now, our watchful master cried, For this for our ship's company great terror does betide. The billows tossed all white with foam and dangerous did appear, As the wind sprang to a hurricane and auld Van Dyke came near. Here comes the Flying Dutchman, comes fast through the hissing spray, And proceeding by the tempest he heads for Table Bay. With bird-like speed he's borne along before the howling blast, But he never can cast anchor there, for the Bay, alas, he's passed. Moan, ye Flying Dutchman, moan, for horrible is thy doom: The ocean round the stormy Cape it is thy living tomb; For there Van Dyke must beat about forever, night and day; He tries in vain his oath to keep to anchor in Table Bay. (Oxford Book of Sea Songs, Palmer)

The waves- majestic...patient..- caress my bare body. The storm-murderous...deadly..- harasses me, and fills my soul with dread. The beach stands empty, all except for me.. The constant tides, my only company. Blessed Be The Sea The ocean is my lover, Always, will it lead my heart in good direction. Long may it be..Blessed be the Sea. No matter what it does, or where it leads.. The Sea will always love me. And I.. Will love the Sea. So much beauty...the abundance o' life. The abyssmal depths a mystery to all. Ocean all around me, Smothering me...wrapping me in it's nourishing blanket... Seeping into me, penetrating my very soul. The sea has come to take me home. And I... Am in ecstasy. Long may it be..Blessed be the Sea. No matter what it does, or where it leads.. The Sea will always love me. And I.. Will love the Sea.

Wave Mother Speak to me in tides, I will understand Pull me past the undertow, Guide my hand Show me what is hidden, Hidden by the wave, Let your flesh rise on the shore, Whose shape and life you gave Take me where the whirlpool goes, Take me to the deep, Swirl me to the ocean sands, And the secrets that you keep. Let me see the ships you've sunk, Taken to your womb, Show me where the coral and the cliffs from water loom. Speak to me in rhythms, mother The rhythm of the sea, I care not how the message comes, But ocean, speak to me.

Pirate's Song To the mast nail our flag it is dark as the grave, Or the death which it bears while it sweeps o'er the wave; Let our deck clear for action, our guns be prepared; Be the boarding-axe sharpened, the scimetar bared: Set the canisters ready, and then bring to me, For the last of my duties, the powder-room key. It shall never be lowered, the black flag we bear; If the sea be denied us, we sweep through the air. Unshared have we left our last victory's prey; It is mine to divide it, and yours to obey: There are shawls that might suit a sultana's white neck, And pearls that are fair as the arms they will deck; There are flasks which, unseal them, the air will disclose Diametta's fair summers, the home of the rose. I claim not a portion: I ask but as mines 'Tis to drink to our victory one cup of red wine. Some fight, 'tie for riches some fight, 'tie for fame: The first I despise, and the last is a name. I fight, 'tie for vengeance! I love to see flow, At the stroke of my sabre, the life of my foe. I strike for the memory of long-vanished prearm; I only shed blood where another shed tears. I come, as the lightning comes red from above, O'er the race that I loathe, to the battle I love.
