  1. Just checked in on it after getting home from work and it looks like the yeast is finally taking effect. No gasses/bubbles coming out of the tubing, but there's alot of foaming action going on.

  2. Do let us know how it goes!

The last batch I did was spiced and extremely dry, I enjoyed it immensely over the last year. I've got one batch in primary right now that I'm doing as a show mead (no fruit or spice) but I am thinking about adding some toasted oak to see how that goes. I've been using champagne yeasts with my honey because I prefer a dry to a sweet mead.

I'm getting sort of nervous that I may have screwed up the batch some how because after over an hour there has been no fermenting activity (that I'm aware of). No bubbles being released through the rubber hose. I'll check on it after I get home from work around midnight. It's 3:40pm now.

EDIT: I'm probably over-reacting and just generally getting impatient. I've heard so many different time frames of when one should start to see activity. I've seen anywhere from INSTANTLY to 3 Days! here's hoping mine's on the sooner side.

  3. New England is not the hotbed of serious pirate reenacting. There are a couple of good crews but they are spread very thin and far apart. We see far more of the ren fair type gatherings, similar to the one at Salem. Where in Mass are you, and what are you interested in? I'm in CT and we are a small crew interested in the living history side of pyracy.

Oh don't get me wrong, I love King Richard's Faire and "that sort of thing", but an actual New England-based pirate festival would be fantastic. Sort of like what they have out in California, Florida or the Carolinas. Being part of a living history group again could be very fun, although a dash of Hollywood/imagination would be more my style, I imagine. I'm not saying living history/reenacting isn't fun, it is! I was with an American Civil War unit for awhile and did love it...

I'm blabbering again. excuse me. I'm from Worcester County. I love history in general but am fascinated by the GAoP. My hat and baldric would like to experience some outdoor piratical fun sometime soon. My kit (or what I have of one) is probably nowhere near being historically accurate, but I don't mind portraying a hollywood-ized pirate. Just no feathers, jack sparrow accents or plastic blunderbuss for me.

  4. Realize that this thread is extremely old and I'm necro-posting, but I noticed that (if ye be still around these waters) I'm from Massachusetts and would love a more localized piratical gathering. The only one (that I'm aware of) takes place in Salem and is very kid-oriented.

  5. After being totally "grossed out" by rum for the longest time....(err...long story, but it involves college), last night I hit my stash and found a nice bottle of Puerto Rican coconut rum. I was so used to Captain Morgans and Black Seal, that I figured that this would basically be the same. It wasn't. Absolutely delicious. I even had a shot of it straight up and it was not harsh at all. Mix it with some orange liqueur and orange juice and you have yourself a delicious beverage.

  6. This is more of a question to do with the modern reenactor and festival-goer. When YOU go to faires, reenactments and festivals, what accent do you speak with? Does the character your portraying come from another nation besides the American colonies? Just curious, as I'm currently trying to find a nationality and accent that would fit my character.

also, if this is the wrong subforum for this post, please feel free to move it.

  7. "...found this rather fitting Incan/Aztec/Tribal pin..." Hummmm...looted by the Spaniards no doubt. ;)

Sew the two pieces of felt together and then pin the pin to the outer layer over the stitching. Throw a couple of hitches around the pinback closure to double secure or a drop of white glue on the catch.

    Jas. Hook ;)

There's nothing worse than a bloody Spaniard soiling my seas with their snobbish filth! Bunch o' bilge rats, they are! This Irishman knows his way around a treasure galleon when he sees one. ;)

  8. So check out what I've done with my blank! I went rummaging through a family member's jewelry stash (with permission) and found this rather fitting Incan/Aztec/Tribal pin that I decided to decorate my hat with! Thoughts? The pin itself is BARELY long enough to fit through both layers of felt, so i'm finding that the pin itself isn't very secure. Any advice on how to keep it secure 100%?

  9. So far, I'd say it's pretty awesome! Great cast, too!

GREAT cast is right mate. Did you watch via that link? Just trying to be a shipmate.

I did, and currently am! They're just leavin port for the Caribbean. Makes me yearn for my garb for the upcoming fall Ren Faire. Still need a good vest, baldric, pistol and blade....and pants....oh dear.

I have the fever as well lad, our next feat is May 18-20 Columbus, Ohio...so I won't be waitin' TOO long...anywhere near ya? (and that IS quite the list mate ;) )

Hahaha not at all. I'm in Massachusetts. Got King Richard's Faire in September/October, though.
