Sorry ya let ye down Blackbeard. I don't know of any literary origins fer the sayin'--it was just a piece of advice from my Grandpa. He never completed grade school--such was the case back before World War I--and I know he didn't read much outside newspapers. Maybe he picked it up from Grandma--she was a school teacher.

Gosh, I love Marty Stouffer! Can I blame watching that show as a little impressionable farm kid as the reason that I'm the huge tree hugging hippie today?

Skippy hit the airwaves in the States in 1966 or so. I remember it well--it was part of that dreadful plague of friendly critter TeeVee shows of the 60's. I was in my thirties and in gradual school in the 1980s, so I don't remember much from that decade. Rember Flipper? (talk about an annoying ear-worm theme song!) Then there was Lassie (i know--it predated the 60's but it ran forever) Gentle Ben--co starring Clint Howard (Opie's brother) and a black bear in the Florida everglades. And Doktari, the adventures of an animal doctor befriending all Africa's wildlife.

One of the best has gotta be Bob Newhart. His standup stuff is priceless. The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart are the stuff of legend. He also needs to be seen in Hell is for Heroes (a WWII drama), Catch 22as Major Major Major, AND as the ninja fighting exMarine in The Librarian: Quest for the Spear. The movie was lame --the best parts were whenever Newhart was on camera. Sometimes it takes a team. Remember Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner and the 2000 Year Old Man? Great stuff. And then there was Bob And Ray. . . . And as for James Coburn: He was at his best in Our Man Flint and In Like Flint.

There are several businesses that may be of help. Try Dixie Gunworks in Union City TN. They have a website http://www.dixiegun.com/ They have been in the business since the late 1950s. Some of the best books on black powder shooting are by Sam Fadala. Most of his books are available from DGW.

For the longest time I didn't like Rum, because just about the only stuff I came across was (Cue scary music) Bacardi!! Then I grew up and left the Utah State Liquor Stores behind --- and --Lo and Behold! There were more kinds of rum than you can shake a stick at (if thats your idea of having fun) Bilgemunky has a great list, But I would also like ta add the following: Lamb's Royal Navy Rum, Whalers Hawaiian (the dark stuff), And ifn ye have a friend in England, Get them ta score a bottle of Captain Morgan Jamaica Rum (no relation to the American marketed spiced stuff). Last summer I got marooned in Omaha, and All I could find was: (cue scary music) Bacardi! It was like Utah but flat. Eventually I did find some Meyers Jamaica Rum. Its pretty good. And ifn ye are lookin' fer cheap, Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville brand makes a pretty fair gold rum--Best fer mixin with Coke or World Market brand Mojito Mix. (Best when th in-laws come by: tastes good, is cheap and mixes well, and you're not wastin' the good stuff on yer wife's dorky brother. Bo I don't like spiced rums--they're kind of like spiced vodka (covering the kerosene taste of bad distilling) But what you're describing sounds like one of the few I tasted and liked I think it was called Admiral Nelson Spiced Rum.
