back yard pirate cove, piratical decor
King's Pyrate replied to oderlesseye's topic in Beyond Pyracy
I do so enjoy watching your progress...you are doing a great job......my own project of turning the inside of my house into a pirate ship is moving rather slowly . My work and personal appearances are biting into my schedule more than I first thought....My pirate plunder has now filled my writing room, bedroom and is creeping into the family room....(it is not you average guy that has a four foot ships cannon in his family room......but the little wench seems at ease with it all.(She even dresses the part when she attends my book signings...Lucky I am that she is turning to the dark side of piracy....lol) I have started on the kitchen (galley) with a floor repair and sketches to turn the island work space into a ships bow with cooking work space at the stern...my idea is to not try to replicate a ship but give the feel of being on a ship.....still working on the concept and pinching the budget to find the doubloons to get the project started.....wonder if I could write if off my taxes as a business expense to get me in the mood to write...lol? Anyway I wanted to tell you to please keep sending photos of your progress......I looks GREAT! Yours in Pyracy Joe -

We are gathering a group in St. Augustine to raid the local Premier of the POTC Dead Man's Chest.....on July 7th….We will be dressing in our best garb then going to Hurricane Patty's Pirate Restaurant for victuals and drink then on to the Theater. All pirates in the area are more than welcome to join us.....I will need to know who all are coming so I can meet with the managers of Hurricane Patty's and the theater to arrange reservations and assure all the pirates to are seated together. Email me at joe@josephlosteen.com After the arrangements are made I will let everyone know the times. DRINK UP ME HEARTIES YO HO!!! Joe O'Steen

Don't know how it is where you are but here in Florida, when I used bamboo wall coverings (inside or outside) they became a roach motel......the bamboo hold moisture between it and the wall and roaches love it.....you might be able to use it if you keep it sprayed. Luck to you. KP -
Yep!....looks clean in the morning but but the afternoon we were not quite so pristine, with the wind blowing sand and dirt and a few hot dogs lbut true might not be the everyday true pirate look....in fact on short notice I could not get Patrick regular pirate pants so I grabbed him a nice pair of baseball pants.....they looked just fine. KP

Here is a photo of myself and youngest son Patrick taken this afternoon on The grounds of the Casements (Rockefeller's old Mansion) at the Ormond Beach(Florida) 2nd annual Book Bash. It was another hot Florida day inspite of being on the river and all in white...sold lots of books, did a radio interview, met lots of nice people and had lots of fun.

Are you sure he was not Minorcan.....it is the next island over and Mahon, the main city, was a more famous seaport at the time....my ancestors came from there in 1760 as indentured servants of Dr. Turnbull's plantation in British Florida. But I am sure there are more men in the pirate business all around the world than we will ever know. Good luck in your quest KP ps: I have been to your web site many times and enjoyed it very much.

Congratulations....Wish you and the book well.

Yesterday I went back to where I bought the canon and while I was talking to the manager of the store his father came up to join us....since I had talked to him in the past about the concrete yard canons he makes.....I told him I had bought one of his replica canons...the wooden one I told him...he got excited and told me this story of the canon...seems he had picked it up from the Lightner Museum....They used to wheel it out front to lure in the tourist......Guess that makes me the proud owner of a former museum artifact...lol.....anyway I am happy with it and it is light enough to take to book signings....I'll find out soon enough. I plan on taking it to a book signing at the Ormond Beach Book Bash 2, April 8th at the Casements on East Granada Blvd.......If you NE Floridians happen by look for the tent with the pirate flag and ship's canon...lol Fair Winds KP

I think it is just for the river rides so not much danger of swells coming onboard. I would make such a river craft with a flotation foam filled interior. unsinkable craft for the kids. but would she not make a dandy float?
-
Take a look at what this fellow did for his summer campers. Looks like it would be great for calm waters or as a parade float. Mini Pirate Ship KP

There ye goes.....I feel much better now!....lol....Too many words sound similar yet spell different and have varied meanings...It is hard ta be a writer for a fellow who quit high school and ran away to sea....and lord forbid if'n ye ever adds the wrong word ta spell check....it just sails around your pc forever waiting ta catch a chance ta slip the wrong word into yer story....lol....Thank goodness for editors. Thank You again for set'n me on the proper course. KP

I blew that one...don't know what I was thinking...I looked up ballaster and it is a fellow who supplies ballast for ships......sometime I just juggle too much data....lol.....sorry bout that.
-
I'd like to see your progress photos as you go through the project...such a Great Deck to start with.
-
Don't know where you can find one already built. I found the balasters at Home Depot. They are exterior and I will keep looking for interior ones that I can stain or apply spar varnish to...they would look much better than the treated ones. and I will build the rest of the rail......you might try that.
-
Great!, I would appreciate that very much. KP
-
The recliners are going to the kids....all three haven't used them in years....besides need the space for the bow.....lol
-
Perhaps you might have a chance to post a few photos. I'd like to take a look at your place. KP
-
Speaking of Rum barrels....I located two but they are 50 gallons.....much to over whelming for my abode....need to find a couple of 10 or 20 gallon barrels. KP
-
Still no luck Cheryl...I may have to make them from memory......lol...not from the GAOP but there used to be a tavern here in St. Augustine called the Spanish Armada that had those high back benches and tables.....then again I am thinking about building the backs of them as if they were up against a ship's rail, a bit different that the high ones but the same idea.....if I run into a pattern I'll let ye know! KP
-
Oh it don't take much to slip something in while you are building......an arch here, a room divider what looks kinda like a quarterdeck rail there...my sketch is a weatherdeck what holds a book case behind the cabin doors......not all can be slipped by as purpose built ship design but a good pirate should be able to slip in some nautical things that you can enjoy... Luck to ye. KP
-
Till I find the canon's final display/resting place, I figured I could take it to book signings.....arrrrrgh!...lol I have spent all day looking online for plans to build an "L" shaped high back tavern bench and table to replace ye o'l dining table......no luck so far. Good luck on the house.....sounds great! KP
