  1. She's a beauty. I'm currently working on a design for a scow/barge for personel and ordanance. Lot's of parameters to meet but "can be done"! This reminds me of the model of the "Effie Morrisey" at the Shipbuilding Museum at Essex, MA. Dutch "X" his mark I've been sailing since a child. Delivered Yachts up and down the US East Coast, Bahamas and Caribbean. Delivered a beautiful ketch to Hawaii from Panama via Marquesas, French Polynesia. I've worked in Passenger Ferry Service with Vehicles and Freight. On Shore and Off Shore Commercial Fishing. Private Yacht Captaincy and Charter as well. My favorite time at sea were the 14 cruises I took I the S.S. NORWAY (ex FRANCE). I like going to sea with a Cabin Steward. I particularly enjoyed the Royal Suite on Viking Deck. The Largest Stateroom ever to go to sea! I liked going to an elegant dining room in my dinner jacket and having a waiter and a busboy and I'm At Sea!!! I took myMom on one of the last cruises the Norway made before the boiler explosion that put her out of commission. We'd gone for Mom's 91st Birthday and had such a good time, we went again six months or so later. Just before her 92nd. The photo is the first full night at sea with Capt Juliensen.

So, I ordered one. It comes in a right tight package as to keep it safe like. Tis just wot I ordered and come way sooner than I was expectin'! So, sez I to yez, If'n ye want'em wot fits yer style, give 'em a look see. Dutch "X" his mark

  7. Aye, this painting by Van Mieirs be a fine one. Upon expanding it I noticed some interesting things. The triptic cabinet of what appears to be a theater audience. I believe this is what Lady B refed to as a sewing cabinet. Behind the people, maybe? On the rack, high on the wall, were other covered pichers like the one on the floor in the foreground next to the bench. It appears this is how Beer was sold and how you kept your mug filled. By the kegs against the wall I'd say this is a Tavern and by the top of the kegs, fish is on the menu. I liked the pipe and 'backy tin. The fact that they are available today in replica is real cool! Beside the worn clothes another sign that times were hard was no shoe buckles. So much fer th' Tupence o' Dutch, "X" his mark
  8. Note has been marked. A weather eye Will be kept. They have offended the Brotherhood! Please give as much info as what can be given to stop any gain for this lowlife deed. Dutch "X" his mark.
  9. Kind Sir, I'd just like to be the first to step forward and tell you that I, yes I shall boldly accept the going rate or just some reasonable fee, if that is what is being offered. I must tell you up front, I have no computer skills beyond checking e-mail and occaisionaly posting pictures. My computer chronically mis-spells as well. I wouldn't be able to mess this up any more than it is because I probably couldn't access the forum, I could just use some money. What ev! Dutch "X" his mark
  10. Sitting in the salon on my boat/home, on the web, looking for gear for my kit. Always can use new gear!
  11. Be it ever so humble there's no place like home!
  12. Avast, Sir! Now this be as wot I wuz referin to. Now I likes some finery whence I goes ashore, but fer whence I'm aboard, sez I, It's short Jacket and wide trousers! I don't be of a mind to run afoul o' th riggin'. No, sez ye! Thinks not, sez I. This yar be'in the Picture.
  13. And what of the Griswold's Inn, do they have that fine food and lodging? Aye, and so close by the river.
  14. Too many years of personal experience! Working on old boats and owning them. The account of the semi=mutinous crew I got from Craig Edwards. A Shanteyman at Mystic Seaport Museum with time to research and the Blount Library at his disposal!
  15. Aye! An I marks ye well! That be a place I be wantin' ta live. For after sleepin and stoppin ball in the racks, there be but one final use fer me hammock. Stich her tight and weight her well fer I as soon be ta Davy Jones than th Devil knows I'm fin out! No, when I slips me cable, I wish t' be livin aboard still! Dutch "X" his mark
  16. Callenish, Isn't that the "Half Moon", Hudson's Ship of Exploration? My Dad did an Oil Painting of her in 1931. It was his first commisioned work after Art School, Yale '31. I have the painting now and it's being restored in Boca Raton, FL.
  17. I am retar, no, retired. However, I live on an old boat. The only thing that works on an old boat is the owner!
  18. Once the Anchor was brought clear of the surface it was "catted" and "fished". The Cathead was a beam extending from the foc's'l' head over the anchor hawse area. The upper sheaves to the Cat tackle was in the timber or cathead, the lower a block with a hook to take the ring of the anchor. This tackle was brought "two blocks" and the fish tackle would then take the stock and draw the anchor up and bring the stock level with the bulwark, lashed fast for sea. As in Bright's illustration the cable was brought aboard and stowed below. As ships grew so did their ground tackle. This brought a need for heavier gear. The cables were stowed amidship and low. As a manner of decoration the ends of the catheads were fitted with a carving of a lion or other cat of prey or other decorative carving such as leaves or a rose, etc. Many were gilded. Cable laid refers to rope construction and indicates use. A cable may be made of three or more "cable laid" ropes bound together to form an adequet cable for a vessel of substantial size.
