Silver Posted June 3, 2010 What ship is this? capt. frankie says it is the dutch east indiamen "batavia" i read the book "batavia's graveyard" by mike dash. it is a great book about the ship's wreck upon a reef at night and the slaughter of the souvenirs by jeronimus cornelisz and his mutineers. it also give you some insight into the workings of the VOC and life aboard a dutch east indiamen.
Captain Frankie Posted June 3, 2010 It's a replica of the Batavia (the VOC-ship L. Silver mentions), build between 1985 and 1995 at the Bataviawerf (Batavia Wharf) in Lelystad in the Netherlands. They used traditional materials, tools, and methods in the construction. The original Batavia was built in 1628 in Amsterdam, and was shipwrecked on her maiden voyage. *Type: East Indiaman *Length over all: 56.60 m *Breadth of beam: 10.50 m *Maximum draught: 5.10 m *Height of main mast from keel: 55 m *Unladen weight: 650 tons *Displacement: circa 1200 tons *Total length of rigging: 21 km *Sail area: 1180 m² *Guns: 24 cast-iron canons *On board in 1628: 341 heads
