The Brigands will be releasing their 4th CD, titled "X", a collection of bawdy, shame facedly dirty tunes, along with original songs, dittys familiar to your ear ( from POTC and the like) and of course some white hot fiddle tunes. We'll be releasing it in time for Yule, but we wanted to offer members of the Pub a chance to reserve a copy from the first printing. If ye wants to be one 'o the first to listen to songs like "Pyrates' Way", "Triple Scotch" and the like, send us an e-mail and we will set a copy aside for ye. http://thebrigands.com Party like it's 1724

As I said I would I would like to throw this out there for anybody that might be interested. The weekend before Thanksgiving this year myself and Slo Gin will be attending a 4 day musical workshop that is strictly focused on sea shanties..... The camp is put on by Hank Cramer along with whats looks to be an excellent staff....Hank has been the Shantyman on the Lady Washington and other tall ships he also has a group called "Constellations Crew" that does concerts for the preservation on the USS Constellation that is in Baltimores inner harbor. While it might be a little late to get registered for this one, this is the 3rd camp in 2 years.....so one should be coming …

Be forewarned, this is pretty cruel when you think about it much, but it's sort of funny in a twisted way. It's from Emily Cockayne's book Hubbub: "To complete the scene [in Marcellus Laroon (III) picture of noisy musicians called The Execrable Concert from 1770], the 'musician' (far right) pulls the tails of three cats imprisoned in a piano-like contraption similar to the one described by Athanasius Kircher in 1650. Cats were positioned according to the pitch of their cries, issued when a spike was driven through their tails. This device was reportedly invented to cheer up a stressed Italian prince." (Cockayne, p. 123) (I, in fact, do own a cat and would never even c…

Been doing a little reading here and there when I can. And one book was having a blurb in it about the sea shanties. A variety of them were used depending upon the task at had aboard ship that kept the sailors in sync and in rhythm. Recommendations on what shanties out there are good period style chant to keep the deck hands and the rigging rats unified in their tasks and work? ~Lady B

It's been quiet in this forum as late so just thought I would just throw something together for the fun of it..... Several years ago I had the distinct pleasure of hearing the Corsairs at Silverleaf Ren Faire in Michigan. It seems there has been some changes since then and wonder if anybody could make a comment on their recent reincarnation..... I also would like to recommend to all of you out there that if you have the chance to see "Pint and Dale" grab on with both hands. This Duo is familiar to alot of the East and West Coast Ren Faire people and they do a number of Maritime fests. Singing traditional songs of the sea, along with newer arrangements of some of the…

Well...it's been awhile..... I seemed to have gone asleep somewhere in the cornfields of Iowa and woke up out here in the Pacific Northwest! At one time I was a bit of a moderator of this forum with Dutchess (Hi Dutchess!) and after talkin a bit to Stynky have thought I would throw my hand back in. Actually might have a bit more to offer than before....Since comming out here to Seattle have helped to form a small monthly get together thats called "The Last Sunday Shanty Sing" (guess when it is)... been trying to get our shanty group organized enough to do something ("Storm in a Port"-name used with permission) and hanging around with a number of great shanty si…

Ok, so hear o'em? Like 'em? Dislike e'm? I heard them for me first time in Big Bear where they had a sound that what 'different yet familiar' 'n it drew me in (plus they got a cute violinist). Then I saw them again at NorthCal Pirate Fest, this time I had t' get one o' their CDs 'n listen'd t' it all th' way home....then it hit me! They sound like a piratey version o' 'Blind Melon' with a hint o' 'Guns&Roses' 'n just a dash o' 'Jethro Tull' (the TJ be come'n from the piper o'course). They did some original stuff as well as their own takes on some traditional.

Anyone familiar with the origins of the classic bluegrass murder ballad "Pretty Polly"? I hear sometimes it's called 'The Gosport tragedy' or 'The Cruel Ship's Carpenter as known in England, as old english folk song. My understanding is that the song originated in England in the early 1700's, and was published in 1750. I have, in my collection, Ralph Stanley, The Byrds, and about a half dozen other artists singing it.

Ahoy, folks. Tom Lewis in his song "Sailor's Prayer" includes the following chorus: Oh Lord above, send down a dove with beak as sharp as razors to cut the throats of them there blokes what sells bad beer to sailors. The credits list written by Tom Lewis, chorus (trad.). So how traditional is traditional? Lewis himself purports to have found the chorus listed in a book, which itself called the verse "traditional." The book was published in 1968, and was by Charles MacHardy, titled Send down a dove. The book does in fact include the verse, and does call it traditional [although the wings, not beak, were sharp as razors]. But there the trail seem - for me so far …

I think that 'Pirate Music' today is in a similar state as the whole garb issue. For garb, we have the hard core re-enactors, who strive to recreate the clothes and accoutraments that were in actual use during the GAoP. On the other hand we have those who are more interested in representing what the general public thinks pirates dressed like. And lots of shades of difference in between the two outlooks. For pirate music, we have those who try to re-create the actual music of the period, with period instruments and voicing and arrangements. And on the other side of the coin, we have the pirate 'core' style ( akin to heavy metal with words using the seamans and pira…

The Brigands "Pirate Scum" CD has been selected to be the background sound bed for a documentary on the 2008 Baltimore Privateer Day event. LOL - maybe they will include the part where we blew the manhole covers off the street during our first set! BOOM! Pyrates Way Magazine: "Their newest CD is a masterpiece. The instrumentals are authentic and spellbinding. The melodies are THAT strong. The voices of Cap't Thighbiter, Bloody Bill Marley and Butch Cannon blend together in practiced precison" Rated 5 out of 5 Parrots Bilgemonkey: "The Brigands stand out, as true piratey intstrumentals are sometimes hard to come by... Summed up, Pirate Scum is a well composed …

Here there be singers! A bit short-noticed, but for those of the crew who happen to be in Philadelphia on the THIRD MONDAY of each month, a Sea-Chantey and Pub-Songs evening is held at The Mermaid Inn (now is that appropriate, or WHAT?) in the Chestnut Hill (Germantown) section... Webpage Here Your landlady, Joanne, has a good collection of specialty stouts and ales and can talk the brews with you all nite, if you'd prefer, or you can join in with Cap'n Fudd (Charlie Miller), Bosu'n Dan (Mendini) and the crew and make the nite cacaphonous with your favourite Chantey (New ones are MORE than welcome!) or just sit and drink... The next one is tomorrow nite, so if you'v…

Coming soon! Bridands Folie debut album "Fog & Fire" I've been privileged to hear most of these songs live & to hear a few of the rough cuts for the final CD. I think music lovers, especially fans of sailing songs & historic tunes are going to be very impressed. Jake & Karen are a fantastic musical duo. This CD is a define "must add" to any well rounded collection.
