Hope I'm asking this in the right section. One of my pirate characters is a free black Haitian woman who was a street musician before she went to sea. I asked about suitable period instruments on another forum and one of the suggestions was a rebec. From what I could find out, it was fading in popularity, but still in use. In the right hands, it doesn't sound half bad. I'm kind of leaning toward it, since it fulfills most of my requirements (portable, cheap, gender/race-neutral, etc.). Problem is, while I know it was readily available in Europe, I have no idea if they were readily available in the Caribbean. Why not switch her to a violin, you ask? Because I've heard it…

OK we have 5 new tunes so far for our 6th venture into recording, the working title for the CD is "Ship Happens", also the name of one of the tunes. What think you of the name? Too risque, for us? Bear in mind our other CD titles: Meet The Brigands Bloody Seamen Pirate Scum X Inner Buccaneer As usual, we perform the new stuff for a season, and then record it, so release will not be til Yule or thereabouts.

Attach an audio file to a post, is it possible? Failing that you'll need to search out Waiting for Bonaparte by Men They Couldn't Hang for Smugglers The boat rides south of Ailsa Craig in the waning of the light There's thirty men in Lendalfit to make our burden light And there's thirty horse in Hazleholm with the halters on their heads All set this night up on your life if wind and water speed Smugglers drink of the Frenchmens wine and the darkest night is the smugglers time Away we ran from the excise man It's a smugglers life for me It's a smugglers life for me Oh lass you have a cozy bed, and cattle you have ten Can you not live a lawful life and live wit…

The Irish Rovers were around even before my grandpa. My grandpa is an old seadog himself, having been in the Merchant Marines and the Navy. From what he's told me he should have a mansion in Davey Jone's Locker. There songs are songs of the sea, the pub, and nationality of Ireland. Here's some of their stuff. Farewell to Nova Stotia Craciunal in Killarney(Christmas in Killarney) The Day the Tall Ships Came Finnegan's Wake The Pub with No Beer What do you all think?

Can we post mp3's to the forum? I have some good Irish reels and jigs from a now defunct Fort Lauderdale band, "The Irish Times". Can I post these? conchchowder aka The King of POG The TAO of POG...part 1 So THAT'S why you served the stuff in 8oz cups with lots of ice! (heard uttered by smashed guest after LUAU 2002 while carrying their Super Big Gulp 32oz cup out of the party with four people carrying them...)

While on my New England visit I took in an afternoon at Mystic Seaport Museum. As always the feel of stepping back in time to a whaling Community two centuries ago is appearant everywhere. At 4pm, aboard the Whaling Bark "C.W.Morgan", they observe the first Dog Watch. My friend and "Bones" virtuoso extraordinaire, Tim Reilly and three other staff members were doing what sailors do during this "off time" when not eating. One young lady was making a ditty bag and the others were making music. No Shanties as there was no work being done but "Fo'c's'l tunes" or "forebitters". Songs for the crews enjoyment. I sang the "Amphratryte". My favorite forebitter as the tunes went 'ro…

Ahoy, mates! The crew of the Adventure is putting together a stage show and we're looking for original but period lyrics to "Drunken Sailor." We intend to open the show and draw the crowd by singing "What Do Ye Do With A Drunken Sailor?" If you have a favorite lyric that is period but isn't one that is song often, send it in and you may hear it at Lawton, Middlefaire, or Pirate Days in The Colony! Here's an example - "lash up his chest and show him the keel!" I thank ye! Blackbead

This is a kind of semi-piratical video production of the famous shanty , sung in French! No real robbing or pillaging, but lots of comely youngsters singing, sailing and donning pirate-like costume.

I just wrote this sea shanty, to be sung by the crew of the Cynosure in my short novel The Treasure of Ashur MacBain, although I expect no more than a stanza or two will actually appear in the finished story. I conceived of it as a halyard shanty, but I'm not sure the rhythm is right for that. The one halyard shanty I know, Blow the Man Down, spaces the effort out more evenly between every line. This one sounds more like What Do You Do With a Drunken Sailor? or Santy Ano, capstan shanties where the sailors push several times on the chorus. It uses the tune of , with a longer pause between stanzas for the chorus.CRO'JACK WILL Oh, Cro'jack Will had squinty eyes And…

I was wondering if you guys can tell me some songs you like that have to do with sailing, pirates, or anything that makes you feel all warm inside that gives the image if sailing your own boat out into the sea (or something like that) I like "Beyond the Sea" by Robbie Williams it could be theme music from like a movie or something too.

I'm throwing a Pirate Party on the beach for me Intended on his 40th birthday this summer and we wanted to spend some of the party singing Pirate Songs and the like. Even so, not everyone who is coming is well versed in traditional Shanties. Can anyone make a suggestion as to where I might find lyrics on line for the traditional sea songs? Iphi

A Native Rhode Islander, Jon writes about the historical and current goings on about the smallest states with one of the longest coastlines. His song about a 17th Century Pirate raid is awesome. "Kept on Fishin'" has become a standard amongst the Shanty Groups, both sides of the pond. It's been covered by Liam Clancy of Clancy, O'Connel and Clancy. "Catch and Release" is about a new form of "sport whaling" using suction cup harpoons, you get where that's going! "Restless Waters" let's you know behind the wit and sarcasm is a very big heart. You can find Jon at www.jcampbellwampum.com Incidently, he also makes some beautiful jewelery! Sincerely, Capn'Rob

I got my "Portuguese" baroque guitar yesterday. I bougth a bout a year ago an old viola da terra (small tradittionnal portuguese guitar) It was probably from the 1930s but it was not in very good shape. I knew that the size of the instrument would make a nice baroque guitar so I removed the damaged table and finger board and brougth it to my luthier. about 13 month later, here it is: It also features a dual passive transducer connected to a 1/8 mini jack nicely inserted in a water buffalo horn endpin. The pegs are actually 4:1 planetary pegs that imitate the look of traditionnal wooden pegs but with the versatility of modern guitar tuners. I'm very happy with th…

There once was a Pirate captain named Paolo. He was well feared in many parts of the world, especially Caldonia, (modern day scotland) where he was widely known for his brutality. He was also known for his fear of drowning. Captain Paolo could not swim. When his ship, which he boldy named after himself, the HMS PAOLO, was hit by a storm, it appeared that the vessel would sink. Faced with the prospect of drowning, Paolo decided to take his own life. However, the storm cleared, just as he pulled the trigger. Without their captain, the crew was forever lost at sea. Reports were made of seeing the captainless ship still wandering the seas, even hundreds of years later…

I am a HS teacher and our parent-teacher organization is putting on a talent show. I have good baritone/bass voice and full kit. I am informed that talent agents will be attending the show. What song do you suggest I perform? I don't know if I'll have an accompanist or if I will be performing a cappella.
