Ahoy! As we head east and south, we've been seekin' out experienced riggers, sailors, topmen, for the next couple 'o legs. NY state canal system, Lake Champlain, and the ICW south....We have to step and unstep the entire rig many times,so...besides the living historian approach, if you are experienced, or able to comprehend serious rigging challenges along with mind-numbing bull-work, then give a shout, eh? Currently seeking two .

I'm cuious as to how many pyrate-folk have boats and if they had the boat first, then became pyrates or vice-versa.

For many months after not getting into the schools I applied for I've been searching for something to do, and I decided the ideal thing would be some kind of volunteer job that would allow me to learn scuba diving and boating, in some warm country where people speak English, while preferably doing some kind of environmental care work, and if possible not having to pay a fortune for it. Sounds nice doesn't it? The problem was that I didn't know where to look for such a thing, and the ones I found that somewhat matched my ideal criteria were all in loverly places like the Caribbean, which sadly does cost a fortune to go to. However, the new year brought new hope. I'm no…

So, I have a work obligation which will take me to Petra and Amman, Jordan, and then to Cairo, Egypt. Yes, I will try to get to the Treasury and along the Siq in Petra; and I certainly intend on getting within focal range of the Great Pyramids and Sphinx (Ahhh... I have been inside buildings even older!). And I totally promise to post some photos here upon my return. But, any suggestions from the Pirate crowd? I will have precious little free time to sight-see, but I will be frustrated beyond belief if someone out there knows of a Jordanian or Egyptian pirate connection and does not reveal it to me before my trip. I am aware of all the touristy must-see stuff (alth…

The place was a gilded hades, and mammon held sovereign sway over its people. Bearded seamen, bronzed and weather-stained, bedecked with priceless jewellery and the finest silks of the Orient, swaggered along its quays and gambled with heavy gold coins whose value no one cared to estimate... Common seamen hung their ears with heavy gold rings studded with the costliest gems... And every man in that crowd of pirates lived beneath the shadow of the gallows. - Account of life in Port Royal, Jamaica by 17th century traveller named Henderson

In another thread, I was wondering whether there had ever been pirates on the seas near Venice, Italy. ... and googling around, I found that Venetian shipping had been plagued by Dalmatian pirates in the 9th and 10th centuries. (Dalmatia is along the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea, today part of Croatia.) In my mispent youth, I knew a guy who was of Slovenian decent. (Slovenia being just to the north of Dalmatia, along the same coastline). He spent a summer backpacking along the Adriatic coast of what was then Yugoslavia, and said it was the most beautiful place in the world (of course, that predated the Croatian civil war by a decade). Anyhow, I could definitely s…

I went to http://maps.google.com/ and located the real Tortuga (see my post under (Tortuga) I chose sattelite and took meself a tour. Good thing I hid me ship, where it was safe to drop anchor! It seems the center of the island is vastly vegetated and empty. The Western side has a very large lake and swamps. The North coast is cliffs and rocks and heavy surf, but the Southern coast IS populated. There seem to be farms, houses and boats. Given the political climate of this area between Cuba and Haiti (think kidnapping, guerillas, modern day piracy) I doubt it's safe. But It was a tantalizing fascinating lil trip via this service. From Haitis dept of tourism in Wash D…

Hi, all: A few years ago, a friend's sister, who had a 42-foot sailboat, took a year off with her husband and young son, planning to sail from the Great Lakes all the way down to the Caribbean and back. Well, they made it as far as Florida, and other sailors that they met along the way warned them strongly not to venture any further (at least not without some serious arsenal aboard and a large convoy to accompany them). They were told that modern-day pirates (drug runners mostly) cruised the waters between Florida and the Caribbean islands, and that if they came across a lone, unprotected vessel, they would hijack it, kill the people and throw their bodies overboard, a…

Does anyone here have any insight for travel in Ireland. I am thinking of flying into Heathrow and renting a car for a couple of weeks to make way through northern England and all of Ireland. I want to see castles and pubs, but not really into battlefields. Have any of you been there or planning a trip there? Let's share notes~

I'll be in Washington DC around the first of August and I was wondering if there is anything sort of pirate related that I could go see. I'll be spending most of my time seeing the usual monuments and things like that, but perhaps there's a pirate themed eatery or place to raise a pint that I could choose instead of some more boring place. Any suggestions?

Where the women are oh so fine, and the fruit is sitting around in piles, awaiting your hungry desire. And the water is warm... I was sitting in a deck chair once, and I heard a scampering amidst the trees. Monkeys! I thought. How I do enjoy watching those little greedy humans. I eagerly awaited the sighting. And then I saw.... a squirrel how not interesting. Share your stories of this magical country...

Hi, all: I'm aware that the Bahamas has a rich history of pirate associations, particularly on the main island of New Providence and its main port of Nassau. I'm hoping to visit there in the not-to-distant future, and I wonder if anyone can suggest particular sites of interest for pirate enthusiasts. I understand there's a Pirate Museum in Nassau. Anyone been there? Did you enjoy it? And where would people suggest to stay if one wanted to be away from the main touristy spots and away from the more modern development in these islands? Looking forward to hearing about others' pirate-themed vacations in the Bahamas. Cheers, Hester

Hi: I'm wondering if there are any cruise lines that do pirate-themed packages, prefereably on actual sailing ships. I'd only be interested in such cruises if they were targeted specifically at an adult-only demographic (which counts out the Disney cruises). Perhaps a couples-only cruise? If anyone knows of such cruises, please let me know. Cheers, Hester

I was in Ocean City last weekend and came upon a new bar around 30th street. It was early in the evening when I went so the place wasn't hopping yet. The decor is nice and piraty. The also have a nice little gift shop of pirate flags, stickers, shooters/glasses, and lots of pirate type t-shirts with their name all over them. I liked the place...though I was disapointed that the bartender and waitresses weren't in pirate attire. Here's their web address: http://www.bootysbarandgrill.com/index.php Seeing this place got me thinking about how much fun it would be to have a pirate raid like the one in Fells Point in Ocean City during the fall season.

We're off to Green Bay for the Tall Ship Festival this weekend. We will be there 7/29-7/31. While I suspect that the Festival will take most of our time, I was wondering if there are any other "must see" attractions in Green Bay. I was there 20 years ago, in December, to watch the Vikings play the Packers on the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field. Don't remember a thing about the town. So it will be all new to me. It's a family trip, so anything we do has to include the kids. (By the way, we're Vikings fans, so we'll be steering clear of any Packer attractions. )

My wife, my daughter and I will be there Opening Day in our Pyrate best (my daughter has a beautiful new plumb-coloured pyrate outfit). I'd love to meet some folks from Pyracy Pub and make new friends. Look for us, I'll have m'green pyrate coat on and my Pyrates Way hook on m'hand.

Ahoy mates! Being inspired by Odorless Eye's and Blackjohn's talk of home pirate decor, I am wondering if any of you might have any photos, drawings, or any other type depictions of a pirate tavern from the 17th or 18th century, either real or fictional? (Mainly the exterior). The reason is, I am expanding and remodeling my workshop behind my home, and would like to design it to resemble a proper establishment of the afore mentioned type. The drawback, though, is it needs to be primarily wood, as I have little or no masonry skills. I do have one historical building I am using as a visual reference, the famous Pirate's House restaurant in Savannah, which actually used to…
