Brethren, The tides are changing and come late August Me, my wife and our cat will be packing up the HMS Chevrolet and moving from Charleston SC to Seattle. In an attempt to make the places we stay more interesting (who doesn't like pirates?) and a little cheaper I thought I would post the course we were looking at taking and seeing if there were any pirates along the way that would be willing to open there doors to a few sea worn souls. Anyway the trip looks something like this. Leg 1: Charleston to Cincinatti (Someone off board has already offered a place to stay there) Leg 2: Cincinatti to Des Moines Leg 3: DesMoines to Rapid City South Dakota Leg 4: Rapid City…

While I served my time in the governors U.S. Navy, my ship docked about a mile off the coast of St. Thomas. The word by the captain is, "We are here for a few supplies. No time to stop and visit." So, here I sat basking in the sun with a one cold "sympathy issued" beer for a one-day and an AWOL dream of a short swim to the coast of St. Thomas. The water was beautifully blue and I could see the bikini clad lasses lying on the white sands of the beach. All dressed up and I just can't go! To this day, I am still unfulfilled. My goal is to set foot upon that beach, drink margaritas and rum, and dream of the golden ages! Okay, my apologies. I will now step down from …

So my wife and I are going to Fort Myers tomorrow, and we're going to leave the baby with his grandparents and sneak off to Key West for a few days. I've only been once, and that was for PiP, and while I remember a bit of the places I went, I can't remember where I ate. Part of that was following a bunch of people to a restaurant and never learning its name, and part of that might be rum-related amnesia. In any case, I want to know some fun places to go. And I thought, Why not ask the fine folks who have invaded Key West every year for the last decade or so?

Ahoy, shipmates! I just returned from a business trip to Charleston, SC, and had a wonderful time! I wound up organizing an event at "The Buccaneer", a local restaurant with a pirate theme. It was an excellent evening full of tales of Vance, Bonnet, and Blackbeard and the history of Charleston! If youa re ever in the Charleston area, I recommend a trip down to the old town area and an evening of food and drink at this place! I was there for St. Patrick's Day and had a great time at $3 a Guinness! If you want more info, check out their website - http://www.thebuccaneerrestaurant.com/! Blackbead

Ahoy me hearties; Made it back from San Pedro City, Belize, C.A. wit all me fingers n' toes wi out haven' ta kill a single god rottin' soul. But by the devils curly tail! Gods wounds a killin' would still brighten me mood! Twas swooth sailing on a port tack all the way down wi fair wind n' weather. On short rations. We gave up the tow outside the reef and I run thru the pass taking green water over the stbd under full sail. The best thrill of the trip, n' we was the talk of the town. We carried all our weapons n' ordanence thru town to immigration, and once again our heavily armed, scraggy, dirty, weather worn, hungry lot was the talk o' the town. Folk knew we wernt' …

Yes, I need to know how many months (average) building a ship lasted in the Age of Sail... I know it might depend on the ship's size, but let's say a frigate... or a sloop of war... something average.

On Oct 17...just a couple days from now...I'll be taking ship on a cruise to the Bahamas. Despite my Pyraticallness (now Officially a word), I've never been on the ocean before. (Been *over* it, flying to Germany and back). The thing that has me most worried isn't seasickness (I been on Lake Erie in a bit of a chop, and wasn't bothered at all), its getting thru customs. Fie on them lubbers! Anyway, I'll be on the Carnival Pride, with an official shore excursion lined up for Epcot during the Port Canaveral port of call (so's I can go to the Food and Wine Festival), and Nassau I'm a-doin' on me own...hitting the Pirates museum, seeing the site of the 1695 Old Fort Nass…

I just purchased a Fortune 30 cutter here in Alaska (30' LOD, 33' 6" LOA, 10' 4" Beam, 4' Draft). She's a pretty little fiberglass cruising boat with a seperate aft cabin. I love the look of wood, but in this climate, it's a pain and very costly to maintain. So, I settled on a fiberglass hull with classic looking lines. To me, she looks a little like a coastal or fishing sloop from the early 1800s. But with the added safety of a 20hp inboard. Currently, her name is Pacific High 1, but I'm looking to change that to Sanctioned Mistress. Yes, I know it's supposedly bad luck to change a boat name, but Pacific High just doesn't suit me. I'm a good enough sailor to deal…

(Please please please feel free to offer me any advice) Other the Christmas holiday I went over to my sisters and to my surprise my brother inlaw wanted to sell me his sailboat (dinghy) for only $50. I would have to be mad....er to pass up that offer so I did what any pirate without a boat would do. I commandeered it, as it were. She floats that's the good news but as the title states this is a "project." She has no mast, boom, center board, rudder or sails. However if I shop smart and play my cards right I can find all that stuff at my local hardware store for until $100. Here are some pictures of the boat in which I've dubbed Lady Rose I was happy to s…

I recently came across an interesting new boat. She's ultra modern, but with a distinctly traditional look. The boat is the 298-foot Maltese Falcon, a brand new super yacht. Not only does the boat look great, she is easy to operate, and relatively simple. She's square-rigged, but she brings a whole new dimension to the concept. I still think that without at least a couple heads'ls and a spanker that there just seems to be something missing. However, that's just my opinion. Below are some pictures I got from the ship's website, www.symaltesefalcon.com. A couple of interesting notes. She can set/douse one sail per mast at a time, and it takes about a minu…

I've had on me brain, fer a few years now, a trip of such magnitude that it would make the most deadly of sea creatures shutter in envy. At some point, when the time is best for the taking, I plan on heading to Venezuela, acquiring a boat (or hitching a ride), and setting sail, destination Miami. I'll follow the islands 'round the Caribbean, taking my time. It will be a great adventure! Anyone have any dream trips that they really are hoping to go on?

I'm not sure if this topic belongs here, but I couldn't find a better place for it. Anyone who's been to Disneyland should know about the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, and hopefully has been on it at least once. Any pirate finatic would go crazy for this experience. While not period correct, it is a lot of fun, and you can immerse yourself in a pirate universe for a few minutes. So, I ask all you people who have been on the ride: what is your favorite part? My favorite is the Blue Bayou section, with the fireflies and crickets and fog. It's so mysterious and calming.

Despite controversy, homecoming is a magical time for teen sailor Jessica WatsonBy: Pete Thomas, GrindTV.com It's the eve of Jessica Watson's return to civilization, after seven months spent sailing around the world, and the 16-year-old Australian brims with excitement. "It's like the day before Christmas except I don't ever remember getting this excited about Christmas," she posted on her blog. An estimated 50,000 fans will cheer as the intrepid mariner docks at the Opera House and steps wobbly from a 34-foot pink sailboat on which she will have lived, with stuffed animals as her only companions, for 210 days. Watson, who has been dubbed "Australia's Salty Lady" by o…

I think I want to visit there once I have a firm grasp of espaňol. I don't imagine they'll have museums honoring the pirates or anything, but I'd still like to see it. Perhaps check out the Galapagos while I'm that close. A port of good historical pirate significance, methinks.
