Actually, I believe that Patrick Hand first mentioned the Careening Camp in this thread following PIP 2006, which I could not attend. He states in the thread (Pyrate Camp 2007) that the pirates who camped at PIP that year discussed the idea of a "careening camp". People tend to credit me with many of the ideas surrounding The Mercury, but I serve only as an organizer of the collective ideas, and while I am flattered, I couldn't say who started the initial idea. I assume it came from a Patrick, Jim, Silkie and anyone else who may have been in the 2006 encampment. See the following thread: Pyrate Camp 2007 - https://pyracy.com/index.php?showtopic=9273 Still, From one Q…

I was tossing ideas around this morning and came up with this. It is a winged skull with the symbol of Mercury affixed to it. VERSION 1

The Fort Taylor Pyrate Invasion for 2016 is in the planning stages. Every year the parks service out of Tallahassee reviews our proposals to hold a pirate event in the fort at Key West. After ten years, you might think we'd get an automatic 'in' with the park locally and at the state level, but the management in both places changes all of the time, as do rules and policies regarding use. We've been really lucky to have both in our corner in times past, but no matter how long we've been there and how much we bring to the fort, we are still subject to review. This is why you should always hug the people that plan any given year for us. They jump through a lot of hoop…

Kristi "Mamasabi" Metcalf asked me to let everyone on the pub know that it is with heavy hearts that they must cancel the event this year. You can see the letter from the Friends of Fort Taylor below. (No one is more bummed than me.)

Next year in Key West! This list is provided as a roll call throughout the year to gauge the number of attendees who are coming down to Key West to celebrate all things pyracy. The attendees will be listed by hotel, motel, rv, or tent. Attendees may be individuals or a part of any group, crew, club and reenactment encampment. The list merely reflects names and general sleeping arrangements of attendees and the list will be updated towards the end of the year with a "confirmed" status for those attendees who have secured their transportation to and from the events. There are many hotels, rv parks, and camps (both modern and historical). We would like everyone to sound off…

What are the feelings towards trade blankets? They could be used either during off hours, or open to the public.

Much has been discussed in these forums about how to dress and what sort of tents to use, but I haven't seen much on two important topics... 1) How to sleep. Well, in tent for most, obviously. But are folks just hiding their Coleman sleeping bags during the day (I doubt it), or are they doing something a bit more period? What should us newbies consider bringing for sleeping? A small light wool blanket? Some sort of period sleeping mat (does such a thing exist?) Etc. For that matter, what other camp necesities would be considered bare minimum for personal items? A small lantern maybe? 2) What are the "facilities" like? We'll be staying here for four days, does anyone sho…

I've never been to the Fort Taylor Pyrate Invasion, but I've managed to convince my mother to let me go this year, and I have a few questions. 1. I'm interested in staying on site in a tent, but would that be allowed because I'm not currently attached to any crew? Assuming the answer to number 1 is "yes"... 2. What's the deal with cooking fires? Again, never been there, I don't know how all this works. 3. Would I need to get my kit approved by someone before I would be allowed to participate? I've seen posts about minimum standards for garb, but again, I don't know how this works. 4. I know I had more questions, but I can't remember them at this time. I will p…

Welcome to the 1720 careening camp thread for the crew of the Mercury. Here we will discuss the 1720 Mercury Careening Camp itself, starting with the look of the camp, including, but not limited to: Tents: Canvas tents, sailcloth awnings, lean-tos and other coverings Camp props: Buckets, casks, bales, oars, rope, hammocks, cannon, etc. Clothing: Headgear, footware, slops, jackets, belts, bags, and extras. Weapons: Swords, cutlass, bluderbuss, pistols, muskets and knives. In the interest of keeping things simple, we shall discuss tents and props and all things which concern the camp itself. Personal weapons and clothing shall be discussed in another thread. The Me…

Wednesday 12-5 William picked me up from the airport in Keith’s van, which went without a hitch if you don’t count the security people yelling at him for parking in the wrong place. My thought, even then, was that we had to get back to camp so I could find Sandi and head out to Café Sole. I was hungry. William got me to the check in building for Compass Realty where I picked up my room key. The life of the room key was not to be a long one, because I managed to break off in the door with my luggage because I foolishly left it in the door without thinking about it. Not wanting to dwell upon this, I suggested we head for camp. I was still thinking of Café Sole. So we we…

It was in irreverent year for things overheard at the fort and there were some funny conversations too easily taken out of context in pieces, but let's hear what you overheard.

Started on a new pair of breeches as I figured I needed something a little nicer for the Ball. Now I'm not sure if I will make the Ball, but i can always use these. They are french fly with pewter buttons, pockets. BTW... breeches are way more difficult than a shirt or vest (or even slops for that matter). This is the second pair I've made, the first pair nefariously disappeared (I won't mention names but she knows who she is). They are basically done. just doing button holes now. https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/KuuWimi6A2xLGcEOxYYi39MTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink mP

I understand that there has been no relaxing on the recently set forth standards involving flash guards and frizzen stalls on small arms despite the historical precedance. By that I mean that there is no historical precedance regarding flash guards. Due to the turnout last year of small arms (I believe it was 1 or at least thats what I heard by spike who was on the field sunday last year) I will not be bringing my tent and tools to tune flintocks this year. IF I manage to finish the gun IM working on I plan on bringing it and modifying it with an un period correct flash guard and an un period correct frizzen stall so I can fire her

For those interested in seeing what happened at Fort Taylor from my point of view, you can check out the web page version of the text journal I kept here. FTPI Pirate Surgeon's Journal 2012 It has been massively cleaned up, added to and edited to correct all those scaly errors I made originally. You can read all about the battles and the heroic Owl, the twins and their bears, the arcane pop cultural references, the Sunday Night Goat Roast, the stupid advertising thing I came up with while jogging and smoking cigars like Tuco on Sunday night. Among other things. Hope you guys enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed re-living the event when I wrote it.
