What did you name your road vehicles? It was believed that to not name a vessel (or horse) was bad luck. That was extended to planes (hence “nose art”) & later vehicles. I think that applies to cars too. I assume many on here do to. Our modern “road-pirate-ships” I’ve always named my vehicles, whenever I drive them for more than a few days. Here’s my list: My main: 1985 Audi 5000: Spectre (thought looked like a James Bond car) 1987 VW Vanagon: Grey Ghost/Spectre II (would disappear in parking lots) 1990 Miata: ThunderSled/Fenix (after major repaint & makeover) 2009 Scion xB: Flying Brick 1995 Tacoma: …

So the local coffee emporium on the main street corner of town to which I stroll on random mornings during my daily sojourn had this special for Easter (yes, I know, that was a few weeks ago). For some exorbitant rate normally associated with an entire meal at a fast-food restaurant, you could get a flavoured cappuccino with a peep duck or swan or whatever that bird-like blob is called floating in it. Odd. "Bethany," I began, using my favorite dyed-shock-of-blue-haired barista's full name due to the gravity of the question, "do peeps melt in coffee?" "I don't know, I've never tried one. The kids order them at night when I'm not here." Beth is 26, so I guess she's t…

Ahoy! I, a life long pirate fan and enthusiast for all things fantasy and historical, wrote a novella about the golden age of piracy. It was a dream I have had since a long time, and I began by researching, researching, and researching some more. I didnt want to repeat the clichees and tropes of usual pirate lore. Instead I wanted to go for a more realistic, grounded picture, albeit one with fantasy elements. If that speaks to you, and you would like to see more pirate literature, check it out! I have no idea why I find this so funny … I’ve been laughing at this for over an hour on my day off (work all weekend). It’s just Grimm Reaper riding along in Jolly Roger’s truck on a little joyride …. (I wonder if the truck is named Banana Scythe)

As much as I love Iowa, I really feel the sea calling to me! It's a desire of mine to someday uproot and move to the coast. Blame a little bit of Beachfront Bargain Hunt and Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives for feeding that long-buried love of the sea once I set foot in the Atlantic at Cocoa Beach long ago and nearly floated away (literally!). So, some of you who reside along the Carolina and Florida coasts as well as the Gulf Coast, start pitching your "This is a great place to live!" infomercial to me, please. It was Latitude Margaritaville Hilton Head that inspired me to start hunting for a place to reside. I don't exactly plan to retire, but refire! Give me all the…

We should start something really fun and bizarre called the Phone-a-Pirate Program, where we randomly pass out our phone numbers to pirates that we have always wanted to talk to and call them. Here are the rules. Give out your phone number. Get or make a call to a pirate you have never spoken with. Carry on a conversation no less than one minute and no more than three. Tell us all about it. Yes, as I told Dorian earlier this evening in chat, I have eaten the lion's share of cheap, oreo cookie knockoffs and I haven't had enough sleep. I shouldn't even be allowed on here in this condition.

Ahoy Everyone! I was curious if there is any interest in pen pals. It's nice to get something in the mail other than bills. It also gives people a chance to work on their penmanship, which seems to becoming a dying art form. Personally I like using 'period correct' items, if possible, and like to write while at events. Not always, but it's fun for me. Anyway, would anyone like to be Pirate Pen Pals? If you are on Facebook, I run a group called Rennie & Pirate Pen Pals if anyone is interested. If you would like to look for someone other than myself to write to, or in addition to me, it might be worth a look. I don't post addresses, but encourage people to sen…

This is both pirate and general related as I have been dealing with this long enough especially after a recent post on my pirate group's facebook page. This has also happened on non-piratical forums and sites, too. It is truly BAD etiquette and terribly narcissistic of anyone to post something on a site or a facebook page or forum that's more advertising and has nothing to do with liking or praising or inquiries of a group or crew. This is on the increase again and I think it needs to be addressed yet again. If you want to advertise on a crew's page or forum, PLEASE ASK FOR PERMISSION FIRST! I think in the Social Media behavior many have lost their manners and just…

http://www.keysnet.com/2015/06/30/503330_cops-responding-to-shots-fired.html?rh=1 Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputies responding to “shots fired” reports on the old Seven Mile Bridge in Marathon Monday night found a man in full pirate costume packing operational black-powder pistols in holsters on each hip. Jamie Spiering, 58, was also allegedly armed with a sword and two knives. Spiering, who said he is an entertainer, told deputies he was on the bridge with friends for sunset. He said there were no projectiles in the pistols, and that he had fired them toward the water. But witnesses told a different story, said Deputy Becky Herrin, the Sheriff’s Office spokeswom…

On 5/11/15, at 10:44 pm Alaska standard time, I am happy to announce the arrival of the second pirate I've brought in to this world. The healthy chap, Christopher Glenn, weighed 7 lb 9 oz and both he and his mother were discharged less than 24 hours afterwards. His older brother, Alexander Acacia, thinks that his little brother is pretty awesome, but still keeps an eye on his chocolate hoard...

I couldn't think of a catchy thread title to get your attention, but I got a legitimate question concerning some "other" hobby related forum site. While my ability to participate in Piratey kinds of things in person has lessened my participation on this forum... I still like this forum a lot, its got great people people, and its a nice open and welcoming format. I turn 44 at the end of this month, which will mark 32 years of involvement in SOME kind of Historical/Re-enacting..... I've done everything from a 15th sentry peasant/soldier, right up through the Second World War. While every hobby group has "its elements" and quirks, on the whole, most folks are very friend…

hey... guess who's going to be a Ski-lift Operator? The Mascot Business gets really.....really slow in Winter, so I went out and got another job. It's kinda weird, I applied for a job a Jo Ann's, but I guess they only wanted little old ladies that can very slowly cut fabric...with 32 years of working with fabric making Mascots, and my art experience they weren't interested in what I could do to help their customers... As I was applying for a bunch of different jobs, I quickly realized just how important a job cover letter is... since 1976, I've only had three Jobs.... 4 years U.S. Army (Infantry) ...2 years at R. Cali Feed Store (working in the warehouse) and 32 year…

I said: HAHAHA... yes, you smarty you. I've really taken a massive liking to that certain show. I had just gotten the blunderbuss, and I had gone out onto the deck to test it. Then I came inside and broke it down for cleaning. As I'm cleaning it, I'm thinking, what's a good name for you. I'm sitting on the floor in the living room cleaning it, and I decided to watch, for the first time, Our Mrs. Reynolds. It was fate. smile.gif To which Duchess responded: laugh.gif Yeah, I Jayne is probably my favorite character. I thought for a while about naming one of my firearms Vera, but I haven't got anything that quite lives up to that name. It's difficult to choose a favorit…

I know there are Pyrates in the Forum from Southern California, Well and some that may want to travel, but I just found this last week and figured I'd share it... Wasteland Weekend http://wastelandweekend.com/ It's kinda like a Pyrate Event, but Post Apocalyptic. If I can get the money for tickets, I want to go. I couldn't get tickets for Burning Man, and can't afford the air fare for Martie and I to fly to Key West for PiP (yeah I know... but the Fort Zachery Tailor Pyrate Invasion is too stinkin' long to type....) So for us, this is an affordable alternative.

I was in a local supermarket yesterday an ran into a lad working in the meat section. As he was wearing a black knit beanie cap with an embroidered skull and crossbone I said that I liked the embroidery and asked if he was into pirates? He explained that he was wearing the emblem because of his schooling. He explained that wasa two year mortuary art student therefore the skull and bones. Jas. Hook

Been awhile since I dropped by. My son enlisted back in March and was supposed to be on Delayed entry until Sept. 25th. He told his recruiter that if something opened up sooner let him know. He left for boot camp April 15th, and is now well on his way to becoming a full-fledged Marine. Got our first "real" letter from him last week and he seems to have his ass & head wired together about the way things are. He'll make a damn fine marine. As for me, I'm slowly deteriorating in the spine, nothing I can do about it, just live day-by-day as long as it lasts. Still trying to get out and do ACW events locally. Gotta go. Bo

I am wondering how long it would take a Victorian era ship to go from Honduras (Caribbean) to England (europe). Would it go directly? Or does is still needs to take the ocean currents and winds in account? If I remember right a 18th century sailing ship would go from England to the Caribbean by first sailing south to the west coast of Afrika and then cross the ocean using the currents and the winds. And it would go back, by sailing up to halfway north America and then cross the ocean to Europe. Does the victorian (steam) ships still need to do the same to get to Europe? And how long would it take to go to Europe? (and back)

So I recently started to pick up straight razor shaving and was wondering if anyone else here might be taking the ol' knife to the face instead of cartridge razors.
