Making a full kit in four months
Mary Diamond replied to Tudor MercWench Smith's topic in Crafting Kit
Not to worry in the least about the fit! As I understand it, the earliest mantuas did not have the plates sewn down - I expect they would have fit the same way. The front pleats are as important to the shaping as everything else, and make a huge difference in the finished appearance of the mantua. That said, I would leave them until after you stabilize the neckline, as your front pleats can have a great range of fit to them, to be as tailored or loose as you prefer. You should be well pleased! - Yesterday

That's what I thought! Even more exciting is the fact that whipped cream is entirely period appropriate (perchance not in a spray can, though) so we could make the drink even more festive!!
-
The Quartermaster has asked the cook to whip up some more period Hardtack for the event using his new found historical flour. I will be shipping it to someone prior to the event

Excellent way to celebrate the holidays in 1721!

untilAmidst the festive air of Cabo San Lucas during the holiday season, one event stands out as a mesmerizing spectacle: the 5th edition of the Mar Y Christmas festival. This beloved celebration transforms the bay into a dazzling showcase of boats adorned with lights, colors, and captivating decorations. The Nautical Christmas Parade has become a cherished tradition, enchanting both locals and visitors with its breathtaking display of maritime grandeur. This year's festival promises an array of boats of various lengths, models, and shapes, each meticulously decorated to create fantastic and magical productions. From yachts to sailboats, the vessels will glide gracefully along the waters, filling the bay with music, tradition, and cultural flair. Organized by Festivales Nauticos, the event invites families and friends to join in and experience the wonder from different vantage points along Medano Beach and La Marina. On December 16th, starting at 2:00 pm, the festivities kick off with food and entertainment at La Terminal near the Breathless Hotel in the marina. This serves as a delightful precursor to the main event, where the parade sets sail, painting the bay with a symphony of lights as it makes its way from the RIU resorts toward the Cabo San Lucas marina. The crescendo of live music heightens the excitement of onlookers, culminating in a breathtaking display of fireworks illuminating Medano Beach – a fitting conclusion to an enchanting evening. The Nautical Christmas Parade symbolizes more than just a visual spectacle; it embodies the fusion of cherished traditions with the festive spirit. It serves as a beacon of community unity and offers travelers a chance to immerse themselves in the rich culture of this Mexican paradise. However, the festival is just one facet of the vibrant holiday tapestry woven across Los Cabos in December. San José del Cabo beckons with lavishly adorned plazas and vibrant decorations, complemented by art exhibitions and the festive ambiance of local restaurants, all paying homage to Mexican Christmas traditions. https://www.visitloscabos.travel/blog/post/light-up-the-season-with-the-cabo-san-lucas-nautical-christmas-parade/

Finally (!!) got around to testing a recipe. Whipped up some "Chacolet" today on a break from work. (https://rarecooking.com/2016/01/28/chacolet-from-rebeckah-winches-receipt-book-at-the-folger-shakespeare-library/) I did the cocoa powder version of the modernized recipe (trying to price shop/online for nibs was proving a weird sticking point for me). I, much to my historical shame, cheated and ground up the red pepper flake in my handy dandy bullet blender. What's the old, much maligned bad reenactor catch-phrase "If they had it they would have used it!!" lol. . . Notes and observations. Mixing up the powder would be a stupidly easy display for events. Actually goes together quick - though obviously would be slower having to hand grind nibs and chili. Flavorwise - I was worried about the cinnamon overpowering the chocolate flavor, but it doesn't at least not too badly, so maybe key it back just a tiny little bit. The spice level is higher then I expected, but definitely not unpleasant (at least to me who's idea of a good curry is a Vindalooo spice blend referred to as "Thermonuclear".) I understand from the recipe notes that the the spice mellows as the flavors meld if the powder is stored for a few months. I meant to start this process in September, so I won't be able to really test that theory. It drinks best after it cools just a touch, at which time it becomes delightfully warming and decadently chocolatey. Will have to figure out best way to prevent/remove the film that forms when heating milk. At any rate, a large jar of this will be coming to Fort King George in December for all the hot beverage needs of those un-enamored of coffee or tea.

The holiday season in Key West is decidedly different than it is in northern climes. 33rd Annual Schooner Wharf Bar/Absolut Vodka Lighted Boat Parade --- set to sail into our southernmost city's Key West Bight and Harbor on December 14th at 8:00pm. For Key West and the Florida Keys, it's a tropical tribute to the season and a big family affair. Parade participants and spectators on the docks watching the parade feel as if they are part of one big family. The parade starts at 8 p.m. Saturday, but the family fun begins at 6 p.m. along the brilliantly decorated Harbor Walk, while the Bahama Village Music Program "House of Pan" steel band chimes in with Caribbean, calypso Christmas carols to please the crowds along the warm winter waterfront. The festivities continue with the island vibe of sound of steel pans. Get your holiday Caribbean on with reggae, soca and calypso! There are scores of delightfully decorated motor and sailing vessels that compete for bragging rights and there are boatloads of prizes with a Free Raffle. The prizes are guaranteed to spur our local creative seafarers to reach their artistic peaks. Long hours go into crafting inventive designs and stringing garlands and icicle lights from bow to stern. Vessels have ranged from a kayak with battery-powered lights, to fishing vessels, to classic schooners. Past winners have included dolphins jumping in and out of the water, as well as manatees, pelicans, sea horses, and other island creatures. Look for palm trees - not spruce, fir or pine - aboard the holiday vessels. And don't forget the conch shells, this is the Conch Republic after all. Add a sprinkling of the Grinch, spinning ornaments, dancing gingerbread men, and you have the makings of a Key West maritime holiday tradition. Entries brings Santa's sleigh directly to the judges' stand at Schooner Wharf Bar. And why not? Along with a traditional ham dinner, hot apple jack, eggnog and other seasonal libations are available to toast the holiday while watching for jolly old Saint Nick to climb up the fireplace on a mast (as did one winning entry's boat). Children will delight in the chance to catch candy and beads thrown to spectators from ships' decks, while viewers of all ages will admire the creativity of light displays and cheer for their favorite vessels. A starry night, a festive crowd and thousands of twinkling lights climbing heavenward from the seathat's Key West's way of saying "Happy Holidays!" So join in spreading the spirit where mistletoe hangs from the mast and strings of lights adorn the riggings: at the 33rd Annual Schooner Wharf Bar & Galley Lighted Boat Parade. https://www.schoonerwharf.com/24boatparade.htm

Making a full kit in four months
Tudor MercWench Smith replied to Tudor MercWench Smith's topic in Crafting Kit
Well ladies and gents . . . We have a more or less functional mantua. It's got some flaws, the pleating and the fit isn't the greatest, considering I was doing it on myself and a not particularly accurate duct tape dress form. I've still got to do up the cuffs, then tailor/finish the front, then hem everything up. But it certainly kicks my girly duds up a few dozen notches. Please excuse the absolutely awful selfies (and the fact that the front is still way too drapey/baggy/unfinished), but I absolutely had to see how it looked over everything, and well .. . I ain't mad about it. Next up (after the final finishes on this sucker) will probably be some mending pile stuff, getting the ring on my belt swapped out for a buckle, cleaning and reshaping my hat, and button holes on my frock. Down to weeks now, not months! - Last week

November 19 - On this day in 1620, the Mayflower reached Cape Cod and began exploring the coast. And on this day in 1718… "…the Willing Mind arrived at Green Turtle Key, and took the Goods out of the Neptune, being in a very bad Condition; and after they had taken out all her Cargo, finding the Neptune to be better than they did expect; and, having a fair Wind, brought both Ships up to Providence, the Neptune got in safe, but the Willing Mind struck on the Bar, and sprung a Leak, insomuch that she was forced to unload and careen, and, when down, found her to be very bad, a Piece of her main Keel being gone, so was forced to hawl her ashore; and when the Carpenters had done what could be done to her, she could not be got up again by all the Strength that could be made, and tried for several Days, breaking and tearing all to pieces, but all to no Purpose; so the Governor order'd a Warrant of Survey on her, and was found by the Surveyors not sufficient to proceed any further, being very much damaged in her Wood-Work and Iron-Work, &c. Whereupon the said King desired a second Survey of his Ship and Goods, they lying in a very bad Condition."
