HMS Surprise (ex HMS Rose) Master and Commander (2003) was still named Rose at the time of the filming and at least shortly there after when I saw her in San Diego. They renamed her to take advantage of her movie affiliation.

Another one for your list is Treasure Island (1990) a made for TV movie which is perhaps, and IMHO, the best screen adaptation of Treasure Island ever made. HMS Bounty appears in this film as the Hispaniola.

Tried to find which ships took part in the 1937 Captains Courageous with Spenser Tracy, but haven't found a resource yet.

Great list though, very interesting. :(

For the film *Swashbuckler* they used the ship *Golden Hind* (Re named the Blarney Cock for the film)

And the Ship in the 1956 TV Series The Buccaneers was indeed the ship from Treasure Island and Mobey Dick and was called the *Sultan*

Here's a bonus...

In *Donavan’s Reef*, the masted schooner that brought Amelia Dedem to the Islands was Director John Ford’s personal ship, the 106 foot beauty, the Araner.

I was lucky enough (when I was too young and stupid to appreciate it) to have a sail on her before she was sold in 1971.
Well, you may not realize it but your looking at the remains of what was once a very handsome woman!

Too funny, Bess. You answered my question before I had a chance to ask it!

Chain Shot and I just watched Donovan's Reef last night, and I was wondering which ship that was. Chain Shot got it right then, because he guessed it was owned by Ford.

Don't feel too bad about not appreciating the ship. Chain Shot got a chance to go on John Wayne's boat when it was moored at Newport, CA. And yes, John Wayne would have been on board. He turned the offer down. Regrets that decision to this day.
...schooners, islands, and maroons
and buccaneers and buried gold...

the 1966 film "Sand Pebbles" was not filmed on the Lane Victory, but was a ship the San Pablo built just for the movie. At that time the largest functioning prop ever built according to the producers. The movie was filmed in Taiwan and the ship was sold to a civilian contracter repairing bridges during the Vietnam war. The ship was there at the fall of the South Vietnam govt. and it's whereabouts unknown today. The Lane victory has the steam engine used for the scenes in the movie on display, along with a wealth of other artifacts. the seam engine was never actually on board the San Pablo.

Now, Bess, I'm not THAT bad. I was, and still am a very big John Wayne fan. But, I was driving cross-country at that time as a truck driver, and when I was in town, he was just recovering from his valve transplant. I didn't want to disturb him. Just trying to be a nice guy. So that is why I missed out. And yeah, I still regret it to this day!

The ship was used in the 1950 Disney version of Treasure Island, it then became the *Sultana* for the BBC TV Show the Buccaners and was then made over for the John Huston film of Mobey Dick in 1956.

Donavan's Reef was shot in 1963

A bit baffled about the Roman Polanski's Pirates one... Neptune was the name of the vessel in the movie, aye?
The real vessel still exists and is moor (oh, good God, now I can't remember)... her name is Genova, though. Heck ye can do a Google and she pops up.

2003 Master and Commander - The Far Side of the World: HMS SURPRISE (ex HMS Rose) is showing 8:00 pm this Saturday May 1st 2010 somewhere, but I didn't catch which channel, it was advertised on AMC but I checked the schedule for AMC and it was not there, I checked History Channel, NGC, and a bunch of others I thought of, and can't find it listed online. Can anyone confirm when this is going to be shown and particularly on what channel?

Thought I'd add that the Lady Washington also made an appearance in Star Trek: Generations, 1994.
Captain Jack McCool, landlocked pirate extraordinaire, Captain of the dreaded prairie schooner Ill Repute, etc. etc.

John Wayne's full name is Francis Marion Wayne, and he was named for the "Swamp-Fox" Francis Marion of Rev-War fame. The Patriot was loosely based on the Swamp-Fox's activities during the American revolution. I had a beer in his old bar in the Chandler AZ. area back in 1981.

What about Fair Wind in Jamaica? Anthony Quinn and (In Like Flint)james Coburn? Late but pyrates just the same.

Bo

I fear no man, no beast, I serve no master, and I'm no-ones fool.
Honor is a mans gift to himself. It is a thing no-one can give, and none take away.
