Am rather found of Barbancourt.

http://www.barbancourt.net/barbancourt/en/.../home/home.html

The first time me and me crew explored this fine beverage, I literally ended up on the roof where I was lighting bottle rockets clenched in the teeth of our production designer. Most of me mates simply refer to Barbancout as birthday rhum.Since we usually give it as a a B-day gift.

Thanks gents for the info!

I have a question.....my cousin a long long time ago introduced me to Castillo spiced rum..which was so so so ever affordable...cheaper than cappy morgan. For a long while it has disapeared off the shelves here in cali. He has a Liquor store manager that gets it for him in the 1/2 gallon size especially for him. I was wondering if any of you folks see it in your states. You don't neccesarily have to be a drinker of it...just wondering if you still see it out there.

(also..I needs to tap me ever loving cuz to order me a 1/2 gallon as well.)

I haven't seen Castillo anywhere in Oregon, yet. Right now, it seems rhum is going through the same sort of renaissance we saw single malt scotch and tequila survive, albeit with increased prices. My grandfather, in Manila, drinks Tandhuay. I will spare you the price; outrageously low, of course! I hear someone is starting to import it to the states. I wait to see what they will try to get for it here!

Castillo....one of the only few that come in plastic gallon bottles, which I found out and raided when I was at my parents for chritsmas eve. No complaints here. Still better than Bacardi, IMPO.

Try Brugal....from Puerto Rico, that's another tasty cheapo.

Castillo spiced rum..which was so so so ever affordable...cheaper than cappy morgan.

Just got back from the licker store.

The 1.75 litre of Castillo Spiced sells for $18.99 + tax.

The Cappy Morgan was only a few dollars more.

The cheapest spiced rum that I sawr was the Admiral Nelson at $15.79 for the 1.75 litre + tax (assuming that the bottles were in the right place).

I usually only buy cheap rum when I want to fill my three gallon keg.

My top 5 in terms of favorite rums going down from 1-5:

1. El Dorado Special reserve (which I believe is called a "demerara") is my holy grail. This is my #1 favorite.

2. Mount Gay Extra Old ( kind of hard to find, and considered the best) it is a bit cognac-y and so smooth you don't even feel it. Makes a better sipper than a cocktail rum. Pointless for Cuba Libres (Rum&Coke)

3. Pussers 47.5 alcohol (not the 42% stuff)...this stuff is rugged and not meant to be toyed with. Claims to be the original rum for the British Navy

4. Appleton Estate V/X...best Rum&Coke mixer

5. Flor de Cana...best all-around value, authentic (l like 7 yr but the others are ok)

Hope this helps.

I love El Dorado Demerara. Introduced my mum to it and she really enjoys it as well. Have you tried Lemon Hart demerara (the 80 proof, not the 151)?

I like the Mount Gay rums as well, in particular the Eclipse. Makes a nice sipping rum.

And does anyone else get intense headaches from Whaler's dark rum? That stuff is a headache in a bottle! For dark rum, give me Cruzan Black Strap rum!

On a whim I decided to try the Matusalem. Quite possibly the most money that I've ever paid for a 750ml bottle of rhum.

rum02.jpgrum03-1.jpg

http://www.matusalem.com/home.html

$31.99 plus tax, title & license.

I don't know of any cool pubs to spend St.Paddy's day at here in Dallas, and I'm too lazy to drive to Fort Worth just to drink. So I wanted to be sure that I had a quality bottle to spend my time with. In case I end up staying home.

Prior to the unpleasantness that we had with the British during the last quarter of the 18th century, rhum was the drug of choice in the colonies.

Matusalem....l'il on the spicy side.... tastes ok, no complaints really, though not significantly remarkable as the others as I have tasted.

My name comes from the French Canadian pirate flick ( which is my ethnicity, not the rum).

i would have to agree with Mr. Hand about brandy....it is a pretty significant 18th century spirit....and not to be overlooked.

Me French Canadian roots have gravitated me towards the Unibroue Corporation, which makes some pretty highly potent hand-crafted beers.

Hey, Mats:

Unibroue also makes the prettiest beer I know:

UnibroueEphemere.jpg

... although it's often hard to find here in Ontario. But you gotta love Quebec ... a province that will happily make an apple-flavoured beer with a picture of a fairy on the label!

As for rum ... I do like Matusalem, although I think Gosling's Black Seal Bermuda Black Rum is probably my fave:

goslings_blackseal.jpg

... very molassesy! Mmmm... like old-fashioned Hallowe'en kisses!

To mix with fruit juices, though, I like Appleton Estate. Speaking of which, when I was in the liquor store the other day, I saw they had a 3- litre bottle of it for $110 CDN. [That's 0.79 US gallons, btw.]

Tried Pusser's at a rum tasting earlier this year and enjoyed it. I also like Lamb's Navy (which was served at one of the campus pubs when I was a grad student).

lambs_navy_rum.jpg

One of my classmates used to drink a couple shots of that with a bag of ketchup-flavoured chips, and call it "lunch". Ya didn't want to mess with her!

Cheers, Hester ... who does not like it "spiced" ... and don't even try to serve her white rum! (I mean really, what's the point?)

Today, my husband and I went to my 80-something-year-old parents' place for a little Easter lunch -- takeout BBQ chicken and chocolate cake.

While I was there, my sister phoned to ask an important logistical question about the turkey dinner which she'd invited my parents to share tomorrow: i.e. Did they prefer white or dark ...rum!

Sometimes I love my family!

Cheers, Hester

Yes, Indeed.!.....the Chasse Galerie (flying canoe) illustration is my favorite, but for ye pyrate folks, there's Don De Dieu:

http://www.unibroue.com/graphs_our_beers/d...on_de_dieu.html

Incidentally, right about the time POTC DMC came out I wanted to find out what Johnny Depp actually drinks...and I found out he is quite the wine drinker who raves about Calon-Segur (Chateau Estephe) whic he raves about, claming that is an inexpensive French bordeax:

http://www.luxist.com/2006/01/17/johnny-de...p-wino-forever/]

And my dear pyrate friends, I ordered two bottles last year at $69 a piece, which the store claimed 2001 was the best vintage....inexpensive? NOT!

CALON.jpg However, my assesment, as far as vintage wine goes, I first tried it with a filet mignon, and found out that it would be a better match with venison because it is not the sweet taste that I am accustomed to. Bordeaux wines are pretty complex , this one was real silky but,as I said, more complimenatry to venison than steak beecause it has the same characteristics as venison.

My other half swears by Havana Club rum.

http://www.havana-club.com/

Concequentially, he owns several types :)

(I say he because I don't drink alcohol).

Havana Club and Bacardi are the common types of rum one can get in Belgium. Those are sold in supermarkets etc. If you go to a specialised liquor store here I'm sure there are other kinds too.

I noticed we have something new called Voltage, which is non alcoholic rum and fruit flavored. Maybe I should give that a go :)

We can't get this stuff in America....because of the trade embargo against anything imported from Cuba into the US. Anything in the US called Havana Club is not from Cuba.

I personally like Pussers and Gay Mountain (know, sounds...ahhh...well...), last is a golden barbados rum.

As an everydays rum and in out tent pirates cocktail tavern (bookable for events) we use the "Ols Pascas", brown and white.

I don't know it is available somewhere else than here in Germany. It is very smooth and a good cocktail base, 'cause the own flavour isn't that strong after all.

Our favourite drink (in our customers opinion) is "Tortuga Libre", made of (cylindrical glass needed) 2 fingers high white rum, two fingers high brown rum, two fingers high lime, and, al last, two fingers high Coke.

Unfortunately, we have not many quality rums over here. Most are "German Rum", which means cheap blends.

Fair winds,

Jack

Cross the northern border, Mats! Saw Havana Club on the shelf at the liquor store the other day. Hadn't realized it was real Cuban rum. Have to try it next time!

[i've gone off Gosling's for the time being -- after a nasty case of overindulgence complicated by stomach flu over the St. Pat's day weekend. Besides, the performing seal on the label isn't exactly the coolest looking logo on earth (unlike the Bacardi bat).]

Instead, this time I bought Captain Morgan Deluxe dark rum. It's in a textured, old-fashioned looking bottle -- but I miss the cartoon Cap'n.

Several years ago, at a theatre festival, I saw a woman do the most hilarious solo one-act play about having an 'affair' with Captain Morgan. She spent the entire time talking to the picture on the label, and it was so funny, I actually had tears rolling down my face.

Cheers, Hester

Just heaved open a bottle of Angostura. Delicious, smoky.

My personal fav is the Dogfish Head Honey Brown. Best straight, but very mixable.
