Good Costume

Well--it all depends on what ye're goin' for. If'n its a costume--there are lots of halloween store sites. If'n its more or less real piraty clothing or garb, ye've found the right section, just read the topics and look for some question you might like answered.

Ye might also try Bilgemunky.com The purple primate has lots of reviews of good garb sources.

When you find some promising sites, the key thing ta remember--at least in my experience--is shop around! Ye'll be surprised at the range of price and quality ye'll find!

Also check out Kass's website if you wanna do your own stuff. (Why it's not listed there, I don't know.) http://reconstructinghistory.com/

Wait until you see the new website Kass has in the making!!!

I checked out that Painted Lady site, sorry Callenish Gunner, when prices aren't posted (as with majority of items offered), one cannot look to see the garment closer, and I questioned numerous other things, I could not possibly recommend the site to anyone.

Rumba, I believe Callenish wasn't so much recommending the site as he was recommending the vendor, having been a customer of theirs and presumably finding their products to be satisfactory. That's the sort of testimonial we need to hear from our pubmates especially when a vendor's site isn't as descriptive as we'd prefer.

Ravenswood Leather

I've never purchased through their site, but I've patronized their booth at faires. I absolutely love their shirts (the Swordsman, the Highlander and the Rogue I can vouch for), and their leatherwork is tempting.

I certianly wasn't questioning the sewing, just the poor way the site was done.

well i for one am not as website savvy as might some may be ...so i can't assume that others know any more than i do about constructing a website ....they are a small opperation and not some giant renfaire based opperation that does thousands $$$ from 20-30 renfaires across the country ...i judge them by the quality of what they sell and i have seen their products up close and personal ....and though you might want to view them closer online it may be beyond their computer knowledge i just offer a recomendation of the quality of their workmanship and the products they carry so you don't necessarily have to wade through the non-period renfaire bits

  • 1 month later...

if you haven't found an outfit yet, may I suggest hiring a good seamstress to make one for you? a custom fit can be all the difference between a costume and a quality garment. I would be happy to quote you a fair price to recreate any type of garb you have in mind.

I got my garb from these sites, and I highly recommend all of them:

Hat: www.captjackspiratehats.com (I own three of these hats and couldn't stress the quality of this product enough)

Boots: www.CAboots.com

Pants: www.centerstagecostumes.com, or my second pair is from

www.flyingcanoetraders.com

Shirt: http://renstore.com, The shirt was very lightwieght and simple, all I needed to do to make it look perfect was replace the buttons on the cuffs.

Coat: http://69.94.19.253/index.html

Scarf and sash: Make your own, it's cheaper and you have controll over color and materials.

Baldric: http://www.blackbeardscreations.com/index.htm

Pistols: My non-firing replica's are from: http://www.aurorahistoryboutique.com/ahb_p...yStart=0&mySS=0

Firing models, I would recommend: http://www.dixiegunworks.com/

I think that is about it.

I will agree that the Painted Lady has a very poor website, but their work is first rate and the people, JR & his family, are better than first rate.

If you have any questions about any of their work I would encourage you to contact him directly. Their stuff is among the most historically accurate for the GAoP that I have found.

poor website? what do you want from pirates?

I bought a bodice from Ravenswood Leather last year and I love it.

In my over excitement though, I didn't properly pre-wear it. I tied it up as tight as it would go the first time. Now days, I'm told you shouldn't do that for leather bodices. If you do what I did the leather streaches out to much and won't ever get that tight again. My mistake certainly didn't ruin my bodice though! It's still body hugging...it just isn't tight enough to give me cleavage.
