Group Buy on Shoes?

Recommended Posts

I have contacted a shoe manufacturer (in Canada) who can make a Straight lasted early 18th Century shoe.

His claim is that he can make a Sarah Juniper Shoe at a C&D Jarnagin price.

If you would like to see some shoes from these makers, go HERE

These shoes would be mostly machine stitched but vegetable tan leather and all the correct details for the period.

Cost would be $135 (without buckles) and would be paid half upfront and half at delivery.

we would need 30 orders to move ahead....

anyone interested?

At this point, i have sent him pictures of period shoes including the one from the Whydah wreck see below...

WhydahShoe_small.jpg

sexy ain't it....

I am waiting for more pictures and possible diagrams from the Whydah museum. The goal is to provide the ONLY replica GAoP shoe...

The process is this.

If you are even slightly interested, let me know. But if you are 90% sure you would like to order, then really let me know (go to my website and click the comments link)

He is going to work up a sample from our specifications. He will send it to me and I will post pictures for comment.

We will need half upfront as, quoting from one of his e-mails

To make these economically I use cutting dies and a large hyraulic cutting press.  For a new style the costs for dies is approx 2 grand, Approx 4 days  time doing pattern work. New lasts to match you specs $30 a pair I have to order minimum 50 pair.

and (which answeres deadeyes' question)

I can give you the same shoe as Sarah Juniper ( machine stitched) at the same price as Jarnigan.  two widths (reccomend D and EEE) in full range of sizes 7 to 14.including half sizes

After the example is made and approved, its just a matter of getting 30 willing to spend $135. If you know of anyone who might be interested, pass on the word and have them e-mail me.

He estimates for time:

Q:After the green light, how long would it be before delivery?

A:FOR THE FIRST BATCH PROBALY 8 WEEKS PLUS, BY THE TIME WE DO THE SAMPLE WORK WITH YOU, HAVE THE LASTS MADE AND GET THEM PRODUCED.  AFTER THAT APPROX 3-4 WEEKS FOR A HALF DOZEN PAIR

GoF.... when is he going to start making the shoes? (And when do you need the 50% deposite?)

My brogans are starting to fall apart (the leather is tearing, so I can't resew or glue them back together again...... but hey...they lasted over 10 years....)

But my cash flow gets messed up at times, so an aproxamate schedule of production so I can figure out if I can get a pair......

Thank you for the info, GoF, but i must also raise one more question...

His colonial Buckle shoe sells for $109 on the web site. Why the 20$ price hike? is that going to include shipping as well? forgive me for being a penny-pincher, but times are tough now..

TIA

Deadeye: I was asking the same thing.... so don't feel too bad.

The cost for the shoes reflect an increase in the costs for him to have the lasts and dies made.

He will offer many sizes of shoes, 7-14 including half sizes in D widths and EEE widths (we can get any widths, but these are the most common) and that is 64 lasts (32 pairs) lasts. His supplier has raised prices since the other shoes were made.

Patrick

I understand the money issue... and Christmas is not the best time to try and justify $135 bucks for shoes.

I would imagine that the timing is a matter of how many "serious" commitments I can collect. A lot of it comes down to the last thing (by the way, for folks who don't know what I am talking about, a last is a wooden "mold" that the shoe is built onto). His supplier of last is a commercial venture as well, that has a minimum order of 50. We can't start any of the production run shoes until all the lasts are recived.

We are going to work on the sample now so that I can get a shoe quickly so that folks will have an idea of what they will be getting. Once he gets the orders and the 1/2 deposit, he will get the lasts made and start production. His estimate is 8 weeks from the deposit for the initial batch (I am not sure how many that is yet) and then about 6 pairs per month after that.

I will post the information as I get it, but if you have questions, let me know.

I am guessing that with re-enactors as slow to commit and pay as they are, if we could get this started by February, we would be doing good.

Part of the start up cost involve buying/having made about 32 shoe lasts. This is because he will make shoe sizes 7-14 in D and EEE widths (including half sizes).

So I says to myself... "hey now, we can save some money buy not offering bizzarre shoes sizes. I mean, what re-enactor has a size 14 foot!"

And then Captain Sawney comes walking in the door!

If this shoe deal happens, you will get your 14s. You better order 2 pair though incase it doesn't happen again!

I take it you are referring to the very last pair pictured and not any of those above, such as the earlier court shoes? Just to clarify. I need the earlier shoes.

I stomped around Hampton' Blackbeard fest this past summer in bare feet - I don't want to repeat that.

By the "last pair down" are you reffering to the Whydah shoe that i posted a thumbnail of?

If you need an Early 18th late 17th style court shoe, I suggest Sarah Juniper, or Bjarne's boots (you can find a link to their websites at gentlemenoffortune.com under sailors kit...

If you need an early shoe like that, you are going to have to have it hand made for you.

I don't think I could get 15 people interested in that shoe, let alone 30.

As for "regular" sailor/pirate, I don't think we could ask for a better shoe to copy, since its from Sam Bellamy's wreck.

But maybe with Reconstructing History's new line of Gentlemen's coats, there will be more of an interest in a Gentlemen's shoe.

PS

Good luck.

Hey, if you can find 30 other folks... make that 28 cause I will get "another" pair of shoes too, then we can move forward on a late 17th C pair of gentlemen's shoe group buy.

Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to piss in your cheerio bowl or nothing, but most folks could care less what their shoes look like (that is are correct or not).

Spending $500 on a pistol is no problem. $300 on a pair of shoes is insanity to them. That is why I am hoping that $135 will hit the sweet spot.
