The Jolly Roger

Jolly Pirate

Recommended Posts

Might it be the song also called "Cardiff Rose"?

The first verse goes:

The sun came up over the Spanish Sea

Our homeland far behind us

Being hunted by the king´s navy

I´m sure he´ll never find us

Pull away, me lads of the Cardiff Rose and hoist the Jolly Roger

I´ve actually got an mp3 of the song at:

http://www.menvafan.net/pirat/songs/Molly_...Jolly_Roger.mp3

The band singing it is the swedish band Mollys(formerly known as Molly Maguires). The mp3 is totally legal, since I got permission from the band to put it online :)

I have some old sheet music hanging in my apartment. It's the song "The Jolly Roger," has anyone actually heard or seen a recorded version of this song?

Can you give us a quote from the lyrics to give us a clue? Many songs have been called "The Jolly Roger".

There is/was a group in N. California at Northern Faire that call themselves the "crew of the Cardiff Rose". Their website is:

http://www.tower.org/rose/

The Cardiff Rose was written by Roger McGuin (if you are around my age, you might remember him from The Byrds). I wrote to Roger to ask permission to use the "Cardiff Rose" in the NQG Pirate Song Book. He told me unfortunately he no longer owns rights to the song -- EMI does. Sadly, they are a little tougher to get permission from, so the song is not in our book (anyone have connections at EMI?)

In case yer interested, Roger McGuin's website is: http://www.ibiblio.org/jimmy/mcguinn/index.html

He has a great CD album called "The Sea" -- of shanties (you can buy it online for $9.98 and before the CD arrives, right away you can listen online -- cool arrangement). He now is really into folk music, and his albums really reflect this.
