What does your user name mean?

Mission

Recommended Posts

Many people's user names are pretty straight-forward, but some of them appear to have some history or other meaning behind them. So what does your user name mean? (Fancy, I expect full disclosure from you. <_< )

Mycroft: "My brother has the brain of a scientist or a philosopher, yet he elects to be a detective. What might we deduce about his heart?"

John: "I don't know."

Mycroft: "Neither do I. But initially he wanted to be a pirate."

My reputation procedes me, but it also follows me. While captain of the Hammerhead, it was my standing order to chum the seas wherever we sailed. This left a "red wake" trailing behind the ship. Any sailor foolish enough to fall overboard went to the sharks that ever followed the Hammerhead.

It had a way of keeping the men on their toes. Aye, it did indeed. Not to mention the impact it had on rumor mongers and other ships.

Well then the thirty some Jack Sparrows pon ship be curiously involved with what to say huh?I am Diego Santana de la Vega I am an Elizabethan England reinactment participant 20-26 weekends a year. I chose Diego as the name of the first mate and cartographer of one priviteer Sir Francis Drake. Santana came from Carlos (tuff one). de la Vega was the Governor of a small mexican state that was once saved by Drake (found afloat out to sea he was) and later gave clemancy to Drake pon being faced with an accusation of piracy in his states own trial. Errggghhh somesthings likes that. Me name is so English Me thought pon Queens touch "the Spaniard" mayhaps be of easier reckolect.... It works.

Well, let's see... The "Mad" part is a nickname, from those that (rightly) think me so. "Jack" is me given name. As far as a last name, I can't seem to recall it in all honesty. I'm certain there were no avian references, though.

Yo ho ho! Or does nobody actually say that?

I've loved mermaids since I was a child. Whenever there is a pool/beach party I spend most of the time underwater so I've been compared to one alot. However, mermaids are supposed to be underwater 24/7 so I figured it's pretty rogueish to be spending all this time on land. Hince the Rogue Mermaid

Everyone in our crewe ends up with a nickname at some point. Some are earned via personal traits, others from exploits while on a voyage.

Some of the fair maidens in my previous life gave the the Hurricane moniker, based on a Evangeline song out some years ago.

Hurricane comes from my historical habit of leaving relationships in an extremely messy fashion. As I say, Cat 5, Emotional Wreckage and Human Debris...

I've had it for some 12 years now, though I'm probably down to a Cat 1 in the last year. The tempest has settled down, at least in terms of relationships, eh Diosa?

"Sjöröveren" is Swedish for "the sea rover." And it's supposed to be spelled "Sjörövaren" but I guess it's too late for that. And, as discussed in other threads, it's best not to try pronouncing it without a safety net and liability insurance. That, and the burden of figuring out how to type a "ö" have led to most folks round here calling me "Sea Rover" which is fine by me.

The first online group I ever joined (back in 2000) was called The Order of the Grey. It was dedicated to Jedi Knights who used both light and dark powers for the greater good.

All my Star Wars-related board names have "Grey" in them. I'm Grey Jedi on FanForce and Rebel Legion boards and Commander Grey in the 501st.

So naturally I called my pirate screen name "Captain Grey".

Originally started out as my SCA persona- Roderic Hawkyns, OL OP OGR OM OSC KoE OG .... I found that as I developed into various different re-enactment societies, it was easier to maintain the same name. So Roderic exists in about 5 different timelines from 1580 to 1760. Roderic was an out of the air pick when I joined the Society, 28 years back. The Hawkyns part came about ten yeas ago when I got serious about Elizabethan persona and decided to claim a distant relationship with Admiral Sir John Hawkyns. The y is a period spelling and shows up in some of Sir John's writings.

I was playing around on one of those "Get Your Pirate Name" websites, and it came up with Red Bess Bonney. I don't use the Bonney part, but I liked the sound of Red Bess. When I first logged on the Pub, I was sure it would tell me that the name was taken. But it wasn't, so I've claimed to be Red Bess ever since. I've been working on a persona to go with the nickname (Elizabeth Mary Rose McManus - the simple shepherdess who becomes an infamous she-pirate) and now I even have friends who call me Bess.

Welllll.... PATT is a shortened version of my last name, and I've been using that as my knickname sence I was in the Army.

When I joined the S.C.A. I was a 4th century Pict, and mistakenly thought that they didn't have a letter "P" so I was Atrig.... at the Pensic War (20ish) I became semi-famous down in "the Bog" for woading interesting parts of women...... :P because the woad kinda got all over my hand when painting, I became Atrig Bluehand......

When I started as a Pyrate, I just added the letter "P" back into my name, dropped the "blue" and became Patrick Hand ... sounded good an pyraty....

From the Philosophy Shoppe post...

Mission It's yer name lord! Would ye be a man o' the cloth? Monk or Padre? I ney woulda could guessed.

You know, I almost became both a Monk and a Padre at different times in my life...however, Mission has nothing whatsoever to do with that. It's all about a misspelling...

When I joined another pirate site, I was trying to think of a good handle. I usually use MarkCK, but I wanted something more appropriate. So I chose one of my favorite pirates from the General History... Captain Misson.

At one time in my life, his story fascinated me because he and ex-Padre Caraccioli were philosophers who practiced an ideology with zeal. (An ideology I have since come to personally recognize as being flawed at the core... No, that's not right...humans are flawed at the core or the ideology would be wonderful. However, since it was not useful here, I abandoned the ideology.)

Anyhow, when I joined the other site, I wasn't sure how to spell Caraccioli, so I chose Misson. (I dropped the 'Captain'. Nothing so regal for me, thanks. I'm naught but a humble pirate.) Except I later discovered I didn't know how to spell that either. But it stuck and I carried it over so those who knew me at the other site would know me here as well.

That's the second time a misspelled name has become a facet of my life. I try so hard, too...

Mycroft: "My brother has the brain of a scientist or a philosopher, yet he elects to be a detective. What might we deduce about his heart?"

John: "I don't know."

Mycroft: "Neither do I. But initially he wanted to be a pirate."

As a Civil War reenactor, I proudly portray Pvt. Enos Dinkle (2nd VA Vol Inf)... I thought about bringing the "Dinkle" moniker into Pyracy, but figgered it'd raise too many questions, and I have enough f that in the 19th century already.

Like Bess (above), when I first went to log in, I accessed a pirate naming web page, and elicited several random names (you only need to enter "A" and "B", etc. to get a new name each time). Armed with a few samples, and fresh from finishing a copy of Treasure Island, I created "Cap'n Pete Straw" totally out of thin air as adequately piratal without being overtly obvious in any area, and easy to remember.

...and "Pete" made the running for two important reasons, one of which I won't post in a PG-13 format.

well at first m'name was chosen Lady Seahawke...cause...well, am a Lady and second am the hawk of the sea. As time has gone by, and developed at the writing site...I added a first name of Cassandra.

For as it is being revealed that the title Lady was rightfully hers by birth, Cassandra is a fitting first name as it will be shown that she has a tendacy to help others (if somehow her anger is stirred from some type of injustice). She tends to do her pirating mostly against the Dutch, French, and of course Corsairs (persona history and all ya know)...umm though the one here is the exception...I am sure.

Seahawke...again, once ta prize tis spied ta prize tis mine. And a hawk tis very good at spy'n ta prize then swoop'n down to snatch it from ta sea.

That is the short version.

Short version: Red Handed Jill is the name that Wendy would have taken if she had joined with Captain hook's crew in the Peter Pan Tales. And being as that she was a great story teller (as I have also been told I am) I thought the name fitting.

Longer version: the above, plus.....my never ending ability to get caught when attempting to do what I aught not do....Not really anything to do with the usual "red Hand" of pyracy...refering to the bloodied hand. My daughter, whom I call Tinker Bell, was watching Peter Pan one day as I was trying to choose my moniker for pyracy and.....What the heck....Why deal with reality when fantasy is soo much more fun! Only later did I discover that htere was another Red-handed Jill on the pub...note the hyphen? But I had taken it and so it will remain! B)

Well, mine is pretty straight forward. My Parents named me William (After me father and grandfather) but my Marines named me "Doc". I was a Corpsman in the US Marine Corps for 13 years. My last command and the one I enjoyed the most was Foxtrot Company, 2nd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment. Hence F/2/25. Since computers get squirrely with slashes I dropped them.

B) ah, let's see, the short version - the nickname snowflake was betowed upon me by a friend round about 27 years ago during a snowstorm with giant flakes falling on the smoky t-tops of my friend's car and paraphrasing shakespeare - all's the world's a mcdonald's, the people are the french fries and the snow is the salt. from that day forward i was snowflake and he was french fry. then - when i made the invitatins for my wedding last year, they looked like parchment scrolls. i used 'cathedral' font. my husband's screen name is siremorgan, so the annouoncements read :

be it known

that on such and such and so on - lady snow and sire morgan wil become lard and lady of the manor....... and i've been using that more than the snowflake nick since., thougn most of my friends just call me snow! B)
