Flogging Molly goes PIRATE!

Well, I just picked up the new disk yesterday. I have to say that I am a wee bit dissapointed. It lacks the flash and energy of some their other stuff. It feels toned down and overly polished.

Thats pretty much how I feel about it, and I listened to it for 3 days straight in my car and still it's just missing something.

I've listened to it a few more times since I made that post. Then I put in Drunken Lullabies and some other downloads.

The new disk is good, I'm not disputing that, but it isn't great. It just feels like they sat down to fill a quota, the formula of punk/folk irish music. "must have one sad type ballad, one ballad that ends well, one comedic song, one raging pissed adventure,...." And then played them over and over again in a studio until something of life was just sucked out of the songs and a little extra special polish was put on them.

yeah, I think that's about it...

I love traditional(ish) Irish folk music, groups like The Wicked Tinkers, Dervish, and Wolfstone. I usually listen to angry rock music, and man, Flogging Molly combines all that is awesome into one thing!

I really need to pick up the CD soon, I've only heard one song from their website and I loved it!

Apparently, the band had a great show down here in LA not long ago. I'm sorry I missed it. >.<

My favorite part of the live show is how the singer looks like he's about to have an aneurysm.

"The time was when ships passing one another at sea backed their topsails and had a 'gam,' and on parting fired guns; but those good old days have gone. People have hardly time nowadays to speak even on the broad ocean, where news is news, and as for a salute of guns, they cannot afford the powder. There are no poetry-enshrined freighters on the sea now; it is a prosy life when we have no time to bid one another good morning."

Aye, FM is a racous chorus of mighty music.

The powdermonkeys have been a playin' "Salty Dog" aand "the Devil's Dance Floor" all the Yule Season!!

Cap'n Bogg and Salty did a mean cover of DDF at the Festival Piratas last August.

I challenge ya Molly Luver's to give "Peg Leg Tango" a spin. It not all be fer the kiddies. We floggin' mum's like it too.

Here be the gents of Bogg and Salty doin' their stuff.

I totally agree on this one Duchess. Just got the CD myself (still amazed they had it in the local PX) and although I think it is great, it is missing an edge.

I've listened to it quite a bit since I bought it. I even had a little 25 hour road trip where I conducted a pseudo experiment. I listened to Swagger, Drunken Lullabyes, then the Real McKenzies (Oot and ABoot) and finally Within a mile of Home. My initial opinion still stands.

Aye, Swagger and Drunken Lullabye both gets me vote as beatin' the new one out ... I'm a pirate I ken vote twice.

And me hopes were dashed. No FM melee up here in the NW in the immediate future. The fan e-mail tells a tale of Florida and other nasty bits.

Now if Captain Bogg and Salty would just announce a gig it might make up fer it.

Okay - within the las 2 weeks, I have made out like a bandit. New Dropkick Murpheys, New Flogging Molly and New Pogues CD. (Actually, me first Pogues and first FM cd!) Love them all like crazy! I'm on a serious music high right now! Usually I get a new cd like once a year!

I haven't heard any of FM's earlier stuff, but I do love the newest one. I like their sound, they have good energy when playing, and I just like most of the songs too. Whether or not they have lost an edge they had previously . . . well, I'll just have to go out and buy the rest of their CDs to find out!
