If captured, few pirates wanted to be caught with incriminating evidence. Since most pirates died suddenly and unexpectedly (many were killed in battle, hundreds drowned, and many succumbed to disease), it is safe to say that great fortunes were buried on lonely beaches by roving pirates who never returned.
