Mission, have you come across any example of the 'cook' or 'mess mates'...how do I put this...'clearing the plates', as in, eating the leftover food off the plates?  With finer food being limited among the common man, I've often wondered if it's ever been mentioned.

No. You can barely find anything in the period accounts about the cook or his stewards, let alone something with that amount of detail. 

Mycroft: "My brother has the brain of a scientist or a philosopher, yet he elects to be a detective. What might we deduce about his heart?"

John: "I don't know."

Mycroft: "Neither do I. But initially he wanted to be a pirate."
