Is there any further information? Specifically camping and merchanting for the festival? We're interested in bringing the sutlery down.

I am a wee bit out of the loop this year. I attended a few meetings last year, but work has not allowed me to invest as much time this year. I will get that info out ASAP. This is just the plan so far for what Pirates Magazine is putting together. More will be added as it confirmed.

I am trying to push this for a weekend event as most dont want to travel for a one day event.

Hawkyns,

You may want to contact Duncan McGuyver here at the pub

https://pyracy.com/index.php?showuser=1154 He may be able to help out with some information, as he takes care of the living history camp.

Oi Matt, I do have one question, other than the dinner, what else are the 12 accountable for? I ask as I have already committed, long before the final results of the contest, to the Living History camp for all day Saturday.

  • 4 weeks later...

Does anyone know the names of some of the vendors that have been to Fells point in the past? I live right near there and I'm going. I'm just curious as to how big this event is.

IMO the vendors of been lacking in the past. I assume there will be more there this time as the event has grown so much in the last 365 days.

Is there a thread anywhere about the camp area or living history? I didnt know if it was crowded or not but I would love to put up our little A frame just to have a place to hang out if some of our crew wanted too. Let me know.

She's having another round of radiation treatment for cancer... The lad and I will have to stay with friends while her levels are high we thought to come down for the event but they have scheduled 6-7 round trips of 200 miles each over the next month ...with the price of gas and parking for these appointments we'll be not doing any extra travel <_<

Currently no thread but Duncan McGuyver is the man to contact here on the pub...IF there is no room for your A frame, you might be able to crash in with us...let me know how many...

We looked at bringing the sutlery down, but decided against it. A 10x10 pop up space on a hardstand may work for modern crafters, but it is no good for a period sutlery. No indication was given that any accomodation could be made for a larger period pavillion. My suggestion would be that if they want more period sutlers, they put together a juried, period area as part of the living history camp, instead of having only the modern setups. Second, the $150 fee for the space is a quite a bit more than I am used to seeing, in terms of what we pay for fees at major 18th century market fairs. The cost for a booth at Fort Frederick Market Fair, for instance, with no size limitation, is only $50.

Oh, I 100% agree with you Hawkyns. I suggested that a few times. They would get more vendors and that would allow them to charge less per booth aswell. I am hoping that the vendors improove a bit more over last year as there wasn't much.

-I have yet to talk to Duncan. I went to most of the meetings last year for the event but I have been way to buisy to do so this year. I have had a few re-enactors and weapons masters that are attending Fell's Point this year ask me if there was at least one set time that they could join in on the firing and if so where did they need to get there weapons checked in the morning. Anyone here know anything about that?

Have sent an email to Capt. McGuyver, hopefully he will be able to address these questions in good time..

Odds are any firing weapons will be checked in the Living History camp by folks appointed by Capt. McGuyver..

Sorry for not making it over here sooner, I haven't had the time to keep current on the pub in awhile. Let me try to answer the festival questions as best I can:

Vendors:

I have been working for the last two event years to try and bring period vendors in, and the problem comes down to having a place to put them. Of the 3 grass plots within the event site there is a unused plot adjacent to the one the LH camp uses. The issue is that it is privately owned and we could not get permission to use it. The event management does support bringing in period vendor and was willing to do a modified vendor fee for the period vendors, but without a place to put them it's a moot point. We will try to get permission to use the land again next year, and if successful we will bring in a "selected" number of vendors.

Expanding to a 2 Day Event

This is discussed and evaluated at the end of each event and when we begin planning for each new event. All of the key people involved with the event would like to see the event grow into a 2 day event, but that required a greater level of sponsorship and support. This is NOT a city sponsored event, and it is totally reliant on corporate sponsors and volunteers. With the current state of the economy we are lucky to get the sponsorship we have.

LH Camp / Space

Refer to: Google Maps View

While our grass covered pier gives us a unique location to pitch our LH camp, we are limited in our space. With 5 crews and over 50 participants setting up in that space we will not have any spare space.

Weapons

Friday Night Ball at Frederick Douglas Center: NO WEAPONS

Sat Night Pub Crawl: NO WEAPONS >>DO NOT GOING DRINKING AT BARS WITH WEAPONS<<

The Leviathan Banquet is a separate event and under different rules - please refer to Pirate Magazine

Privateer Day: Has a strict no-weapons policy. The only exceptions to that are the entertainment crews when they are on stage, and the LH camp participants.

I KNOW THIS IS A SORE POINT WITH REENACTORS WHO ATTEND, BUT THESE ARE THE RULES.

Before griping about the policy please consider:

This event is held downtown in a major urban city, this is not Hampton, Charleston or Key West. The Baltimore cops do not like seeing a bunch of people walking around carrying pistols, knives and swords.

Neither the police or event management have any way of knowing if you are responsible reenactor who knows how to properly handle their weapons or some whack job who dressed up with weapons and may hurt someone out of stupidity.

If you have any other questions plaese pot them here and I will try and answer them as best I can.

To back Duncan up a little...Baltimore has a manditory jail time law for unlawfull firearm carry.

Last year the cops that I talked to were cool about the weapons as long as they were tied, but all it takes is one cop that wants to put an end to it and if that happens you could find yourself in a cement hotel room for a night.

I dont think that would happen, but we are strict here in Baltimore.

As for the Devil's Dozen event:

Weapons are allowed, but must fall within the law. We have permission from the establishment, but not the police. Its more of a "at your own risk" kind of deal.

I sell weaponsat the event, but I said that I would escort each buyer to their car with any purchase. After that it is our of my hands what they choose to do.

Some clarification on the weapons policy please.....

What about the sea battle, if there is one ?

What about walking to and from the LH camp, or other "approved" areas ?

How would "approved" weapons carrying people be identified ?

Who, exactly, are considered "entertainment crews" ?

If NOT going into the bars, are weapons OK to wear while walking around ?

Do the rules apply to both swords and guns, or just guns ?

Will there be black powder demonstrations, and who will be allowed to fire ?

Each of these points need to be addressed, especially for people coming long distances like myself. No sense in bringing my weapons and related items if I can't wear them.

What about the sea battle, if there is one ?

Yes, there will be a sea battle @ 5PM involving the Pride Of Baltimore, Bounty and Schooner Farewell.

The Pride is the only vessel taking passengers for the battle http://www.pride2.org/come_aboard/day_sails.php

Who, exactly, are considered "entertainment crews" ?

These are groups hired by Fells Point Main Street (event host) to do performances on Broadway Pier.

Will there be black powder demonstrations, and who will be allowed to fire ?

As stated earlier there is a full living history camp on the Bond Street Wharf. The camp will have numerous demonstrations, including small arms and a cannon line. The demonstrations will be done by the members of the encampment. We will not be able to accommodate guests / visitors on the line.

Do the rules apply to both swords and guns, or just guns ?

Both

Members of the encampment are authorized their weapons during the DAYTIME activities - no one from the encampment will be carrying during the ball or pub crawl.

If you are not working this event then you are a visitor, and asked to abide by the event rules. If you bring and carry a weapon anyway it is at your own risk.

Please note:

I only manage the LH aspect of the event, not the entire event. Also at this point we do not have capacity to bring any additional groups / individuals into the encampment. If anyone is interested in participating next year they are welcome to contact me by email.

Fair enough! I am personaly going to lean hard on some owners of private owned grass plots. Maybe I can trade them a sword or something to let us use the space. Would be great to double the LH camp and get some period vending. Next year!

FYI there is now a facebook event page for the show. Not much advantage of joining it but its a fun way to chat about things and see who is coming. Please join the event group if you would like.

Looks like I never have to put Baltimore on my list of places to go. Far friendlier waters south of there, I'm afraid as far as being pirates.

Can't please them all! Your loss!

Everyone with Fell's Point has tried everything that they can do to make it better each year. They have done a damn good job of it. Maryland as a state is liberal as hell and it just doesn't workout to allow weapons. I mean the Maryland Ren fest is by far one of the top 3 ren fairs in the country and it hasnt allowed weapons at all for a dozen years or so.

You cant please them all Duncan, all you can do is try your best to make it the best you can. Certain people...you can never please(not giving an example but you dont have to look far for one).
