Hey, thanks Callenish! Alas, QMJ, I do tuck those socks into my breeches, but they don't stay. As for wearing my socks over my breeches...nah. I personally don't like the way it looks. It's bad enough I have to wear knee pants to be PC, do I have to make them look even sillier by wearing my socks over the top of them?

John: "I don't know."

Mycroft: "Neither do I. But initially he wanted to be a pirate."

The reason your breeches don't work as additional leverage to help hold your socks up is that I didn't have you on hand when I made them to ensure the buttons formed a snug fit on you. I suppose I could have asked you to take that measurement and done that... But I suppose I was somewhat rushing them. ;) However, I can adjust them if you wish? (Great Back to the Future 3 reference!)

Thanks for the lanolin suggest Callenish, and the convenient place to buy it. While I don't find my socks that itchy, I might just try it anyways.

Thanks, but I actually prefer them this way. I'll just wear my new socks from Greg that seem to have more staying power. I like the colors and texture better anyhow.

Unfortunately most modern wool is over processed and the oils have been striped out of the yarn ....a good washing in lanolin shampoo or lanolin added like a fabric softener in the final rinse cycle will add a lot to the comfort level of your socks and wool sweaters.

The lanolin also adds a bit of water repellent-ness to it too, which is great for stockings, hats and mitts...

Can anyone recommend the best maker of stockings for smaller feet? I wear a woman's size 7 (or 7-1/2, depending on the maker) and have had a heck of a time finding stockings that aren't huge on me or too bulky. As in by the end of the day parts of my feet are worn by having to fight with my socks for real estate in my shoes!

Well ran across Burnley and Trowbridge's site and the "clocked" silk stockings a lot of the vendors have been carrying don't seem to show up until well after the GAoP...

such a shame, they were well made....

This one certainly warrants more investigation...

No, but that is a pretty good price for handmade stockings....

As I read the website, the socks are fitted but not handmade: My socks are machine-knit to fit your foot and leg with measurements that you provide.

I like the Liberty Caps too!

If I recall correctly, we do not need to have hand made stockings as in hand knitted...I think by GAoP knitting machines were in use...there is in Twill a thread discussing this...

As to garters, I have both leather straps and silk ribbon. Or at least I have the leather pair floating around the house some where... and aye was fashionable to wear the stockings up over the knees of your breeches....that is how I wear mine...

Yis... Machine knit stockings date to the 1500's if I am recalling correctly. :-)

Yes, of course. I was just trying to clarify the previous statement regarding the product offered.
