But, with your new idea of a deranged madwoman secretly running the ship, that gives me another idea. Conspiracy theories. We can have all the differnt theories running rampant on the ship. Just adds another dimension to the characters having your own opinion as to who the captain is. You could even think bigfoot is the captain and try to come up with the evidence. Either way, I was thinking that the Captain, regardless of who he is, does his job so well and provides for the crew that most of the crew would follow that disembodied voice to the ends of the earth. You can still be just a nosy and knowing, maybe you found out that your cabin is located right next to a voice tube junction and you eavesdrop for hours on end Conceptual Simplicity, Structural Complexity, Achieves a Greater State of humanity. That way the crew couldn't verify whether Nell was the Captain's wife or not, but wouldn't want to upset the guy, just in case she was. But, she'll still need to be a crew member in the sense that she would have to have a job on the ship doing something. I don't think just being an invisible captain's wife would be enough reason to keep her on board. Even if she was only a deck hand, she'd have to pull her own weight with the rest of the crew. I don't think she (Dottie) has to be a member of the crew though... She has her Stateroom (with all of the fiddly Victorian gawdyness) But the shier isolation must be driving her crazy, which is why she keeps trying to stick her nose into everything the crew is doing..... She (Dottie) must live for meals, when she gets to talk to the Officers in the mess.....awh... the obligations of Rank.... I also like the idea that the Captain will never acknowledge her as his wife or by name, but only refers to her as "That Woman" (such as... Mr. Smith, will you escort "that Woman" off of the bridge.)... but he wont let us toss her overboard either......So we really don't know what her position/relationship is.... I really like Dot being that annoying civilian always getting in the way of the crew doing their job...(damn it though... that means I have to make fancy girl clothes - oh well ) I agree the captain should be an amazing leader. When the crew manages to follow through on his orders they are incredibly successful. So have we decided then that I have no physical access to him either?? That's cool!.. If thats so then Ransoms idea of my always looking for him would work and could be amusing, inventing my own conspiracy theories as to why he's hidden and who did it to him and how it happened.. maybe he could be hidden because he doesn't want me or anyone to see him.. some kind of horrible deformity of battle. - maybe it happened while he was away in the far east...maybe the patch monkeys were his first crew. they helped him get home across the big ocean... thats why he has a loyalty to them.. .. also could be why he keeps me on board, even though I cause some problems. I waited for him all that time..and he loves me for it. He missed me all those years in the east and wants to keep me close, he loves me, but he loves the sky and now because of his handicap somehow he's in or attached to the ship and can never leave it so its the only way we can be together. the "That Woman" thing is great!! As a bombadier, I'm going to have a special bomb site device that I carry with me, and then set in place during battle. The bombs would just be in racks, but this bomb site would be a fragile instrument, that I would guard with my life. It would be something that if Dot ever messed with it, or touched it, I would go balistic, since it would be something hard to replace, and expensive. I'm even thinking of giving it a special history...like it came from a guy I was in love with, who was also a bombadier, and was killed in some battle, and left me the site as a momenteau. So it would be even more precious to me, and I would be even more protective of it. BTW, I really like how this whole story/mystery of the invisible captain evolved—mainly because none of us wanted to be captain! I have some western cowboy stuff too, a duster, Dragoon boots, etc. If I don't have to invest alot to play once in awhile and if I am not intruding here, could ya use a rigid frame shipfitter/firefighter aboard? I ain't no orficer niether, just a grumpy ol' snipe engineer. "As long as ya don't piss 'im off, he's ok." kinda thing? Dred Hammerbleau? Got this crazy idea about dressing up my old paintball gun with brass and copper stuff.... attached to a backpack... nah, that's too much. So uniform parts could still be worn.... One of the fun parts about Steampunk, is that it never really did happen, so you can mix and match to come up with a sorta Victorian flavor.... Hey... look at the movie "The Wild Wild West".... yeah... that sorta thing...... And because it never really happened, it's a fun "break" from having to worry/work on authenticity.... Extremely agile his specialty is "Dangling" tethered boarding, repelling down onto other airships and remaining "tied in" for the duration of the attack, come what may. Armed with a compliment of tools and some sort hooked freddy kruger type gloves and toe spikes that would allow him to climb on/cut entry holes in the outside of enemy airships, he knows just which bolts to pull to make an airship "fall inward" and is usually yanked back through the skin as an imploding enemy airship falls away. Having been "given job" by the captain as a child he has no respect for the officers or any military rank, in his eyes they are just "the guys who keep breakin stuff I gots ta fix" as an adult he has known only this ship and it's well being. Quote "ya gots free choices 1. shut up, an fix it ya'sef. 2. shut up, an let me fix it. or 3. tie in, an meet me outside". His name, Skeev a derogatory name for skinners or skeevers, workers who put the skin on airships, a name he must have gotten in the shipyard where the captain found him. Patrick Hand Posted January 31, 2009 Author Share Posted January 31, 2009 I'm going to have to type the whole thing out.... but basically, there was a Confederate Artillery Captain who had been working on an accurate range finder... right before the artillery bombardment preparatory to Pickets charge, he noticed that the ranges they had been given were too high... He reports this to (I think it was Alexander... who was in charge of the Confederate Artillery that day) and convinces him that the Range Finder does work.... SO the Confederate Artillery blows a hold through the Union lines, and Pickets Charge was a success... The Confederacy wins Gettysburg, and continues moving on Washington, so the Union agrees to an Armistice and lets the Confederacy secede... The Union of the United States and the Confederacy of the United States are no longer at War, but both Countrys are separated by treanchworks and fences, One can travel between them, but it is very similar to the Berlin Wall. "Repair and Maintenance" can be a result of disciplinary action... going into the envelope to fix battle damaged struts and framework... That's when some of the crew has seen the Patch Monkeys... Patch Monkeys are like powder monkeys or Cabin Boys (only wilder)... They are young (8 to maybe 12 year old) boys who live up in the envelope and fix any gas bags that are damaged during battle.... LOL Skills: Bombadier, small arms, knives, and cutlass. Bio: In sort of a perpetual state of angry mourning for my lover, lost in a battle some years ago. (Think Queen Victoria in life-mourning for Prince Albert). Because of this, I wear a lot of black. Not head to toe, but mostly army tan and black. The bomb site I carry was a parting gift from my lover as he lay dying. Joined the Columbia's Revenge so I could get my own revenge. Kinda of moody and prickly, but loyal to the crew.
