April 16th thru 25th, 2010 | 28th Anniversary Conch Republic Independence Celebration

Key West, FLORIDA

In 1982 Key West and the Florida Keys seceded from the United States as a response to Border Patrol check points causing 17 mile long lines. The schooner Western Union attacked the Coast Guard cutter in the harbor with stale Cuban bread and conch fritters. The Conch Republic then surrendered to the U.S., and demanded foreign aid (they are still waiting). Now every year Key West celebrates their independence with a reenactment of the Great Sea Battle, followed by a Pirate's Ball, and lots of other fun events. For more details of the history surrounding this event. Even more history.
