I never use to miss the chance

to climb upon his knee and listen

to the many tales of life upon the sea.

We'd go sailing back on barkentines and

talk of things he did, tomorrow just a

day away for the Captain and the Kid.

His world had gone from sailing ships

to raking mom's back yard;

he never could adjust to land although

he tried so hard.

We both were growing older then and

wiser with our years;

that's when I came to understand

the course his heart still steers.

He died about a month ago

while winter filled the air,

and though I cried, I was so proud

to love a man so rare.

He's somewhere on the ocean now,

the place he ought to be;

with one hand on the starboard rail,

he's waving back at me.

For the Captain and this kid

IA ORA TE NATURA

E MEA AROFA TEIE AO NEI

IA ORA TE NATURA

E MEA AROFA TEIE AO NEI

Nature lives (life to nature)

Have pity for the Earth

(Love the Earth)

I know I don't get there often enough

But God knows I surely try

It's a magic kind of medicine

That no doctor could prescribe

I used to rule my world from a pay phone

And ships out on the sea

But now times are rough

And I got too much stuff

Can't explain the likes of me

Chorus:

But there's this one particular harbour

So far but yet so near

Where I see the days as they fade away

And finally disappear

But now I think about the good times

Down in the Caribbean sunshine

In my younger days I was so bad

Laughin' about all the fun we had

I've seen enough to feel the world spin

Mixin' different oceans meetin' cousins

Listen to the drummers and the night sounds

Listen to the singers make the world go 'round

IA ORA TE NATURA

E MEA AROFA TEIE AO NEI

IA ORA TE NATURA

E MEA AROFA TEIE AO NEI

Lakes below the mountains

Fow into the sea

Like oils applied to canvas

They permeate through me

And there's that one particular harbour

Sheltered from the wind

Where the children play on the shore each day

And all are safe within

Most mysterious calling harbour

So far but yet so near

I can see the day when my hair's full gray

And I finally disappear

IA ORA TE NATURA

E MEA AROFA TEIE AO NEI

IA ORA TE NATURA

E MEA AROFA TEIE AO NEI

UA PAU TE MAITAI NO TE FENUA

RE ZAI NOA RA TE ORA O TE MITIE

Bounty of the land is exhausted

But there's still abundance on the sea

Honestly, I was never a big JB fan.

However, after 13 days in Key West (at the PiP festival), I definitely understand what he is singing about now.

And I actually love playing the song Mother Mother Ocean. I got to play it with our band, as well as several other musicians in Key West. It is a fun, pretty song to play.

Jimmy Buffet ( all hail the Buffet) is the man who made me loose all ambition and move down to Florida. I seriously changed my life goals after listening to the new Jimmy Buffet (all hail the Buffet) compilation CD.

"Haul the sheet in as we ride on the wind

That our forefathers harnessed before us

Hear the bells ring as the tight rigging sings

It’s a son of a gun of a chorus."

Quality stuff.

I've been a fan since I first learned to play Pirate Looks at 40 oh, so many years ago. Got to see him down at Margaritaville at PiP - now that was a treat. I think a lot of people just don't get the music until they go down to the Keys and the south in general - it's a different pace of life there and the outlook on life is different. OK, 'nough said, I'm moving...

That's cool! I just moved to Florida last June, I was born and raised in Manhattan, then I started listening to Jimmy Buffett and just had to "go where the weather suits my clothes,". It was also around the time I really started getting into pirates so I had to make sure I never missed another November in Key West. So I packed up and moved down here.

speaking of...you going serendipity???

Sadly, no. I can't get away from work for Gasparilla.

I have to admit that I like Jimmy Buffett very much, but have been a fan "in passing" so to speak... i.e. I'll turn up the radio if "Margaritaville" "Cheeseburger in Paradise" "Let's Get Drunk and..." or "Son of a Sailor" comes on, but I don't own any CD's or tapes of his... after reading the above lyrics, I see that's a serious mistake on my part... could someone help me and tell me which songs those lyrics come from? Or which CD I should buy to REALLY experience Jimmy Buffett? Thanks all!!

  • 3 weeks later...

I have been a Buffett fan for many years (many more than I care to admit). I even got myself a 'Mother, Mother Ocean" tee-shirt with lyrics front and back. When I travel by car I listen almost exclusively to his CD's. It all seemed fitting after sailing the oceans for several years. The drunken port calls, white beaches, palm & coconut trees, wenches, all brought out the pirate residing in me.
