I think the title says it all...

When is this awesome event? Will it be held in the same spot as last year?

Be there a website (other than the person's commentary one that I have)?

Anyone have any info on this event?

Lady B...

Have you been reading the thread in Rabble Rousing, "Event Fees"

How much do you pay to play? (I am sure you have)....

Nathanael T. Logsdon, aka- historyfanatic, has been trying to find out ways to cover expenses associated with the Paynetown Event.

I think the best bet is to find out from him the dates of the event.

Bump...

Well, it seems like this year is going to involve me taking a break from Pennsic... And since going to Pennsic was the only thing that was going to keep me away from this event, it seems that Kate and I are likely to be going.

Looking forward to hearing more about this event as HistoryFanatic gets things organized.

If all goes well, this event may see the debut of my Red Coat uniform...

This event is happenning the weekend of August 9th and 10th as far as I know, but someone please do correct me if I am wrong.

Aye... would be grand t' see ye, Micheal. :) And Kate as well. Since I missed meeting ye both at RF4.

Would like to make an attempt to attend this event IF it's not overlapping with another event I am going to attempt to attend.

Any more word on the Paynestown event?

Outside of the date (which I am unsure of), and following the various "how much to charge (or not)" threads (like this thread) on a few different forums.... I haven't heard anything serious about this one. I even did a google search, and all I found was a blog reference, and links to some of the threads on some of the forums it was discussed on last year.

I would like to know more if any more information is had, but the best I can infer from what I have read is, that expect all the same stuff as last year (whatever last year entailed), and probably most of the same attendees (give or take a few)... Maybe one of the Archangels or Great Lakes River Pirates could shed some light on how it was last year, and perhaps if they have any information about this year that can be shared.

wellllll..........beutiful point on the lake...great for camping....right next to beach...great for swimming.....good folks....had a lot of fun.....even let us comadeere a boat and atack the encampment....."I AM THE PIRATE KING" kept running thru my head.....they pretty much let us do whatever we wanted...after some discussion.....very period camps...no fantasy...toned down rev and colonials mostly

down sides....small event...small crowds...has potential to be really something if they could ever get a backer to promote the event.

they really pushed the pirate boats....great place for it...but dealing with the state committees can be trying at best....hope for the best for them.

but unfornately for me...seems i have a prior engagement in N.C. this year....maybe the schedules will work for us better next year....

if your in the area....good event to git into the ground floor with...

like i said ...has many potentials if things go their way.....

FINALLY!!! The news you've all been waiting for!!!

We've come to some sort of an accord with the state after about 6 months of parlay...

Here's the latest! Pirates of Paynetown Official Website

The website is not finished yet, so there's may be a few links that don't work or new stuff added over the next few days.

Fee is $5 per person over age 16. All costumed participants over age 16 have to register whether camping or not. This is for our insurance. (Also, since we have to send in our information ahead of time, we can't accept any registrations after August 6th. Thanks!)

See you there!!! <img src="https://pyracy.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=" " border="0" alt="huh.gif" />

 • 1 year later...
should see 90 % of us, since our garb and encampment are not quite up to the standards of other groups, how lenient are the providers of this particular faire ???

I honestly couldn't tell you, perhaps Nate will speak up (he is on this forum but onyl checks occasionally), or perhaps someone who has been to the event can speak to this?

My best guess, is it is a reasonably lenient event.... I think the obvious pop influenced stuff is not appreciated, but all reasonable attempts at authentic garb are accepted... And I see no problem with any of you and your families stuff not exceeding that mark by a long shot!

I would think that any honest effort is appreciated - but the tents you get from REI probably won't cut it. Know, however, that the groups generally portray pirates from a long swath of history - so you have GAoP next to F & I militia next to RevWar privateers and L & C-era river pirates, so even if all your stuff isn't consistent to a single period, if you avoid using modern stuff, I don't think it will be a problem. However - ask Nathan, because I am just making assumptions.

"The time was when ships passing one another at sea backed their topsails and had a 'gam,' and on parting fired guns; but those good old days have gone. People have hardly time nowadays to speak even on the broad ocean, where news is news, and as for a salute of guns, they cannot afford the powder. There are no poetry-enshrined freighters on the sea now; it is a prosy life when we have no time to bid one another good morning."

Sorry folks, it took me a little while to see this. As Michael said, I only check this site occasionally. As for the authenticity standards of the event, I'll try to describe to the best of my abilities what is encouraged, accepted, discouraged, and downright turned away...

Encouraged:

Historical authenticity to the 1650-1800 period.

Natural fiber and/or hand-stitched clothing

Historical interpretation of the lives of both honest and wayward seamen

British soldiers of the 1650-1800 period (Gotta have some whipping boys... LOL!)

Wooden boats

Flintlock, snaphaunce, wheelock and matchlock black powder weapons

Demonstrations, programs, interpretations, and theatrics

Gladly Accepted:

Machine-stitching on clothing and tents

Non-British military personnae

The occasional "ARGHH"

Non-wooden boats painted and rigged to look authentic

Modern campers PROVIDED you rent a modern campsite from the state rec area and camp there

Discouraged: (but not neccessarily going to get you kicked out...)

Visible non-period items such as coolers, etc. Cover it with a wool blanket and we're good...

Flashlights

Non-firing replica pistols

Anything post-1800

Cigarettes

Downright Banned: (The best way to get thrown overboard...)

Modern tents

Coleman Lanterns

Polyester "costume" garb (like what you'd find in a haloween store or at some pirate festivals...)

Anything plastic that is worn on your person

"Jack Sparrow" Impersonators

Modern boats that are clearly still modern (ie, an unpainted Coleman fiberglas canoe with the logo on the side...)

Arguing with either event coordinator (myself or Jennifer) about why your Johnny Depp impression is "Period-Correct" :) (This happens a lot...)

Showing up without registering (Ok, not an authenticity standard, but I really want to hammer this point home...)

I hope this helps.

Whoops... Ok, my mistake... The contact info is NOT on the website... I'm working on getting that fixed. In the meantime, the e-mail address for the event is piratesofpaynetown (at) gmail.com. You can also call the phone number posted above.

Silas - get some canvas drop cloths at the Sherin Williams and you should be good.

I'm curious, do they have RV camping areas at the site?

(yeah, I could go to the website and look for myself, but that takes all the fun out of it...)

Yes, there are modern campsites for tents and full-hookup RV sites. They do fill up fast though, so if you want one, you'd do well to reserve it now... The site is Paynetown State Recreation Area. The number to call for modern camping and RV sites is 1-866-6CAMP-IN. You can also access Indiana Department of Natural Resources camping reservations online at: DNR Camping Reservations

Hope that helps...

Blackjohn, it would be a blast to meet you in person - you should come to the event.
