Mr. Gibb's [POTC] coat...er...vest

50 posts in this topic

Does anyone know where I can get Mr. Gibb's vest or have one made. From the look of it, it seems to be a short waisted seaman's jacket with the sleeves torn off. I would like the option of having sleeves or no sleeves as in making them removeable. It seems to have lapels with 2 rows of silver buttons, one row on each lapel. From what I can tell from other coats of this type, the sleeves would have the same big cuffs with buttons as in the frock type pirate coat.

Any one help a mate out?

Nay....but tis close. Mr. Gibbs vest originally had long sleeves, but they have been removed...rather roughly. That's a nice jacket...to be sure, but not what I be a wantin'.

In the dream sequence, wasn't Mr Gibbs shown as a Royal Navy Warrant Officer and sporting the (I think) same jacket in much better shape.

Again, IMHO, we later see him with the jacket without sleeves and a much worse for wear.

Perhaps you might take a look at a Warrant Officer type jacket with sleeves removed.

Just a thought

How's about this, mates.... a better picture of Gibbs's vest... and the rest of the outfit:

Gibbsoutfit.jpg

It looks like a mix of a short round jacket and a weskit.

Jas. Townsend and Sons I believe offers that style of jacket, mcdrago.

That's a great photo. The only things missing are his sash and his baldric.

Now does anyone have a pic of him from the beginning of POTC Curse of the Black Pearl?

I need to see what this coat looks like with sleeves.

Alas, Mcdrago... I don't have that pic.

I'm with a Yahoogroup chat list on PotC Costuming and they have some images of some of the costumes. Not all of them but some of them. It's helped many a PotC costumer.

Anything to help you all out, too. ;)

Ye be most welcome, Mcdrago. Glad to assist a fellow comrade in arms of the Brethren.

I'll have to give that jacket a shot sometime. Make a prototype for my nephew. Growing lad that he is... is ALWAYS in need of proper piratey attire.

Gibbs jacket

Photo of Gibbs

http://www.imdb.com/media/rm1179228416/ch0001230

If you go to the Kevin R. McNally fan site and click on photos, it will bring up several pages of his film work. The bank of photos 51-75 & 76-100 include a couple of photos of him in jacket. One nifty little option is a zoom function. Click on any photo, then right click your mouse, and it activates a zoom function for close up viewing. You'll find it handy in random photos of him in his jacket in the cargo net. His photos can be found here:

This is a little larger photo of his jacket, though obscured. I would add that there are many good production photos that you can scroll through to the right in "Gallery view."

Official Disney POTC site for At World End. Click on the menu stone, then click on the Gallery. To view the photo selection just slide the bar. The fourth photo contains one of Gibbs in his jacket. Again, another somewhat obscured photo. To be truthful, I thought the design was pretty cool.

This site had a couple of nice photos of Gibb's jacket. Just click to enlarge.

I was perusing an 18th century Royal Navy/Marine site this afternoon and happened upon a gent who goes by the name Michael the Tailor. I have no idea of the quality of his work, perhaps someone here knows of him and can render an opinion.

He does provide raw diagrams of his goods and he does custom work as well. Perhaps he could construct your jacket for you. Prices seem reasonable. You can give it a look here: http://www.angelfire.com/va/sutler/sps.html

It does look a lot like the Pea Jacket at Dirigoboy's link it does.

I do like the sound o' his Long John Silver Coats as well, just wish he had at least some photos o' the finished product, and better someone here who knows o' his workmanship. Else wish some others would take needle 'n thread to that style.

{quote}

#10 - $225

"Long John Silver's Coat" - This is the coat most commonly identified with Long John Silver and other fanciful renditions of pirates. Actually a 1670's pattern dress coat, of wool, with different color and cloth on the cuffs, and many buttons on the front and skirt splits

#12 - $350

"Long John Silver's Coat" trimmed in cloth tapes on edges; a simpler yet common version
