Got my shoes today!!!! They are really, really comfortable.

For those more knowledgeable than I, let me know how you affix the damned buckle to it. Can't seem to figure it out on my own.... and I'd hate to pop a hole in where it don't belong.

Hurricane, check out GoF's web site, somewhere on there (don't have the link handy) he has a tutorial on how to do it... Lots of pictures and good instructions, so that should do the trick for you.

Lets see some pics of those shoes now!!!

Thanks!

The only challenge I'm having is fitting the included buckles onto the shoes. The buckles are 3/4" and the place where I would have them centered is 1". Ideas for those that have then or when they get them? I have the earlier version by the way, what they call the "Early Period".

They are crocked. Thankfully, for each of me footies were slightly different. Man, they are comfortable, right out of the box! Been wearing them for the last hour, even without the buckles.

I recall a photo on page 2, 3, or 4 of this thread where someone commented on the buckle "not being centered, is that period or not?" (or something t' that effect)

As I recall th' conversation went on that th' shoe wearer stated that "due t' me foot shape centered buckles always hurt..." (or something t' that effect)

So, perhaps it t'was naught just a 'comfort factor' t' have th' buckles offset?? Perhaps it also be for th' buckles did naught fit if centered??

Hey, this is all Good Stuff - I am naught th' first! Ye all get t' figure it out before mine arrive!!! I got th' early style too, rough out; yers look smooth out Hurricane, yes?

Hmmm, well I naught be do'n nuthin till mine arrive as me feet naught be 'wierd' but they do me odd...and different sizes too. But I too have found some shoes hurt th' top o' me foot depend'n on their make 'n shape so I think perhaps an offset buckle would have its advantage in that area.

Yes, mine are smooth side out. I was thinking of just doing them off center, since then the buckles make sense and would work just fine. And on this particular model of shoe, it looks better than centered, at least on my pair.

Cyn and I traveled out to the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire and ran across "Magic" Miller who hand-makes boots out of his Texas lair. For just a bit over $300 I picked up some deer-skin pirate boots that may be the most comfortable boot I've ever worn. They are incredible.

Buying from Magic isn't just a purchase, it's an adventure. He spent the better part of a half hour showing us the ins and outs of good bootmaking (while flirting with Cyn). It was a great experience and I can't tell you enough how fine the workmanship is on the boots and how great they look and feel.

At least one of the shoes found in the wreck of the Belle had off-set buckles - so we can prove that it existed in N. America during our time period.

The Master's Thesis that catalogs the shoes of the Belle

"The time was when ships passing one another at sea backed their topsails and had a 'gam,' and on parting fired guns; but those good old days have gone. People have hardly time nowadays to speak even on the broad ocean, where news is news, and as for a salute of guns, they cannot afford the powder. There are no poetry-enshrined freighters on the sea now; it is a prosy life when we have no time to bid one another good morning."

All 342 pages of the thesis

I am actually shocked to find out that some of the shoes were of welted construction also.

I am no where near an expert on the matter... But all of my research on the topic seems to indicate that it was during the Elizabethan age, and the years following that shoes changed from "turned shoe" construction to welted construction... By the late 17th century, I am fairly certain that most (if not all) shoes were being made in a welted fashion.

I think (going from memory here) that welted shoes even start to appear as early as the reign of Henry VIII. But again, it seems as if turned shoes remained dominant until around the turn of the 16th to 17th century.
