"The Pirate Code" Nat.Geo. Tonight 8:00 pm USA

Recommended Posts

"The Pirate Code" a National Geographic Channel two hour documentary on the 'Whydah' airs tonight at 8:00 pm EST.

"Salvage expert Barry Clifford attempts to recover the treasures of Black Sam Bellamy's flagship, the Whydah, the first authenticated pirate ship in U.S. waters."

I plan to watch it, and hope others can also see it and comment about the content, insights, etc. gleaned from the production.

Also, if you know what the 're-broadcast' schedule might be, please post that too, for those who might miss it the first time.

Based on the credits, looks like the Bounty was one of them. Pretty cool show overall. Was GREAT seeing the underwater excavating in HD...it's like being right there on the ocean floor.

Was nice to see reenactor footage of pirates portrayed as more low key, down to earth people. No earrings, etc. But reenactor footage always gets a bit stale into the 2nd hour of these historical shows.

I want to know what ever became of that one cannon they found that was sealed up like a vault. They had at one time poked an orthoscopic camera down into to it and saw what looked like a cache of treasure....but I recall something about them deciding to possibly never open it.

It was a great show. I watched it form start to finish. I even took notes hehe.

I do have to agree with Josh about the lack of footage. It seemed they repeated the same reenactor footage over and over.

I was blown away at how many cannons they found. That was one hell of an armed ship. The pistol that was found and restored was an absolute treasure.

I was also intrigued by the FreeMason symbol that was scribed into several objects. Kind of neat to see that tie in with pyracy.

Here is the mentioned shoe that was found...

(God, I hope someone gets a pattern off this bad boy)

Here is one of the gold rings found.

All in all I think that it was a great show. The underwater footage was wurth the 2 hour wait alone. I being a weaponsmith defentaly was glued to the screen. I even had to re-heat my tea 3 times before I finished one cup. :P

Loyalist Arms is coming out with a shoe patterned after it. They sent me a photo of the prototype yesterday. It's full custom They will have a high tounge, block heel, smaller buckle than the later 18thC shoes, and squared toe. Sole will ne nailed on and pegged, along with the wood heel. They don't have them yet but should have them available in the next month or two.

I vacation on Cape Cod, so I've been to the Whydah museum many times. Well worth the trip if you are in the area. So much more than what they showed on air.

The cannon barrel, which contains gem stones, has been in an electrified solution for several years. As of this past September, it is drying, and they are removing encrustation. Once the cork plug is removed, they are hoping to be able to "pour" the contents out to determine the value.

I thought the show was very good, and followed the local legends. I'd like to see it again, if it is rebroadcast. If not, I'll have to find the dvd from the network.:ph34r::ph34r:
