I got this flat white mirror from the neighbors trash the day after their yard sale...it still had a $10 price tag on it.....I painted it gold and mounted it on the wall then placed a nautical shelf that I bought at the flee market for $15.......after hanging the mirror and the shelf they still look like they were missing something so I hung my mugs to the larboard and starboard...think it came out nice and filled the alcove just right. They find trash at someone's house and reinvent it into something awesome and then leave it for them. The other day I rescued two pine tv trays. I sanded them down all over and have now decopaged the tops with nautical pin ups and sailor jerry tattoo pin ups. I just love them. I wish their original owners could see them. Notice my pirate shower curtain reflected in the mirror.....lol In this shot you can see the reflection of some of our pirate events And OE I would love to go to Pirate Con but don't think I can do it this year....I am real busy right now researching information for a small book on Pirates in St. Augustine and have recently canceled my Nathan Beauchamp Series with my publisher and reediting them so I can place them with another publisher...busy, busy...lol I WOULD LOVE TO MEET ANOTHER PIRATE WITH SUCH A GREAT DEDICATION TO PIRATE DECOR. The rope would look great....I used to go down to the shrimp boat docks and get their discarded rope but most everything in the river now has turned to pleasure craft that uses nylon rope.....I'll look around some. Ah, the barrel. It's from Tom Sawyer Island at Magic Kingdom. I have another one over by the sofa that we use for an end table. I'll have to get around to taking photos of the rest of the room... The rest of it are old crates, an oak box we got surplus (shipping crate kind) a board from Home Depot that we stained and some other flotsam and jetsam. We originally used two large oak barrels instead of all the smaller stuff but the smelled so badly of vinegar we couldn't bear to bring them in the house. So they remain in the garage and we just improvised from there. Turns out it is much smaller for us to ship to Key West so we'll be leaving the barrels home this year and go with this look instead. The back credenza is just a buffet we happened to have around. But I think it turned out amazingly well. Will post the other photos of the great room when I get a chance. Thanks all for the compliments. On March 29 there is a Pirate gathering at Hurricane Patty's Pub so I will be meeting some of the new folks. I am being swung to the authenticity side and am having phase one of my new garb made for the event. (it is hard to change from the Hollywood garb I use at book events...lol but I am trying.) King's Pyrate Posted March 19, 2008 Author Share Posted March 19, 2008 I had the urge to do something and gave it some thought while at my computer desk and decided I needed a ship's rail on my desk. I went to the craft store and bought a few turned candle holders, two strips of balsa and two flat pieces of bass wood. ...trimmed & sanded the balsa and glued it all together......cost about $20 and took less than an hour.
